Go Hard to Go Home - Episode 103
What has fishing, whales, strong winds, giggles and plenty of sailing action?
This week's episode of Free Range Sailing of course! Get a crew's eye view of some Beaufort Force 6 offshore sailing as we push our little yacht at top speed from the Swain Reefs to Great Keppel Island.
Troy edited this one and I did the sound mixing! It was a lot of fun to put together. 120 nautical miles of adventure averaging around 7.5 knots in our little girl. Enjoy!
Big respect

That steady wind was the key- a quick lull may have made for an exciting exit!
I was cleaning up my inbox and came across this episode that I must have missed. Oh man, no doubt this wonderful spirited filled day of sailing will certainly stay with you both! Pascale love, you can rightfully now go sit with the big boys... you're seamanship while in the cockpit as the rail submerged only inches away was inspiring, beautiful, and a testimony to the stout Aussie Heart! I once was out on a stunning old classic racer with two of my friends, I was down below in complete calmness watching blue water gurgling past the windows when the helmsman shouted out ...we lost the BB! The inclinometer scale stopped at 45 degrees but to loose site of the BB we had to be over 50. We all scampered up to peek over the high rail and could see the keel still doing its job...the wind was steady and the boat was gracefully making way. I couldn't resist... seeing the belly in the mainsail I climbed up and in like a hammock and hoisted my beer bottle! The sounds of camera shutters from the following powerboats has always left me wondering...how big were those enlargements, and who's wall are those pictures hanging on! Cheers... 馃嵑
Wow! SERIOUS sailing, tuna, and humpback whales. What a wonderful episode!
It's a hell of a trip when one day is an episode!
Hey guys, Awesome last couple of episodes. they have become to feel like independent low level tv episodes than scruffy YouTube :)
All smoke and mirrors my friend. We are still very much scruffy YouTubers!
That was fun! I've sailed with humpbacks in much calmer waters between Lanai and Molokai, and had an "interesting" time trying unsuccessfully to sail that trimaran back to Maui. We got back to Oahu in about a quarter the time we spent trying to leave! Its my one and only good sea story ;-) Oh yeah, thanks for the crocodile sighting guarantee in the new intro. No more whinging from me! Its a cracking good intro too!
I'm guessing that tri was going against the wind? We did slow down going through the whale party but it was still pretty exciting. As you know, its incredibly hard to get Pascy laughing uncontrollably like that ;)
Outstanding! As always. Pascale's laugh, even while crashing through a following sea, makes my day. Great shots of the wing-on-wing setup; thanks for always thinking about how to pass on knowledge as well as entertain.
You're welcome Tom. Some of those Pascy laughs might have been a bit anxiety tinged while we were rocketing along! It really is exhilarating to be in that kind of sea and wind though it was a bit hectic when night fell as there was no moon and the wind gained a few more knots. Good warmup for southern waters.
Fantastic episode!! Spirited sailing, wonderful fishing, and whales! What could be better!! Troy did an epic job landing that tuna while handling the boat at the same time. That was amazing! Great to see Pascale handling the heavy wind and seas so ably on her watch. Loved it!!
It's unusual to make an episode from just one passage but that one really was a doozy! We are really enjoying sailing now that we have passed the miles where the wind is always on the bow. Mirrool is getting to show her top speeds!
Of course she did!馃挓 The more you do it, the better you get! It's nice to have crew that can get ya safe if something happens! Keep it up!
Great sail, love some heavy wind action! Mirrool seems to go downwind really well! Great intro now also! Good stuff 馃憤
It was a bit of a Pascy boot-camp; lots of reefing under difficult conditions. Naturally she did great!
:)
Awesome sailing!
Hope you got the feeling of being with us.
Awesome
You're most welcome
