Parcels, Possums and Provisioning - Episode 71
After 3 weeks on the hard we move Mirrool to the Marina in Townsville to continue our refit.
This week (among other things) we remove our old fuel tank and install the new fibreglass tank we made at the boatyard. Troy shows you our freshly constructed tailor made and leak free cockpit hatches. Our new throttle lever arrives in the post and we begin its installation. I also do some whole foods provisioning and find some cheeky possums in town!
We're really grateful to Arnold for supplying us with our new throttle lever. Arnold's is an online Australian run chandlery that stocks a huge and ever growing range of marine equipment at very competitive prices (www.arnoldsboatshop.com.au). To get free shipping on any order from Arnold's delivered within Australia simply use the code "Freerange18" at checkout.
The episode is a mixed bag of content this week that will hopefully keep you entertained. For our part we are currently trying to fight our way south down the Queensland coast against the prevailing SE winds, some things never change hey!?
Much love
Pascale

Wow, the cockpit of Mirrool has certainly had some modifications! There is currently a Clansmen for sale in Lake Macquarie and you can see the difference. BTW where does the name Mirrool come from? That moment when you switch the engine off and are under sail is one of the best things, but also, that moment when you hit the starter button after a rebuild and the engine fires up has to be an even better feeling. cheers Andrew and Deb
The name Mirrool comes from a small NSW town. I was told it meant 'Sweet Water' in the aboriginal dialect down there. Further research revealed that it actually referred to clay from which pipes were made! An engine starting first pop is always gratifying but we prefer the oil to stay inside as well.
:)
Hi guys I was wondering what you used to clean off mould. Hope the refit was a success. Loved the diesel rebuilt one in the eye for the "OMG you have to be a i I I was wondering what you used to clean mould. Loved the boat yard diesel rebuild one in the eye for the "you have to be a brain surgeon to fix diesels " I repaired an old BMC gypsy that had been under water for a week by disassembly clean and reassemble working still 6 years later.
Good effort Barry! We clean mould off or boat using 1tsp TSP, 1tsp borax and 1tsp bi-carb it's a leave on solution that leaves surfaces alkaline.
Love your channel guys, were looking to sail away in our Mottle 33. Sometimes I think its too small however you guys show me that it is all possible on your Clansman 30. Looking forward to seeing you guys when you come to Brisbane. Were living a Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron at Manly so keep us posted as I will buy you a beer and take you to the nearest whole foods shop. Ross and Fiona
The size of the boat isnt really a sea-safety factor a lot of the time as a personal factor. We have found it hard to invite other people to come visit and there are very limited places to lounge around comfortably on an off-watch. The centre cockpit on the Mottle may cause a few space issues but they're a boat with a pretty good history. We look forward to meeting you and it will be easier to chat about this stuff face to face.
Another excellent tutorial! Patience is learned, all right! I start every project hoping I've learned my lesson only to find I haven't... Maybe next time?
As I get older and crankier, I just have to learn to be more and more patient. It's a never ending opportunity to educate myself!
G’day Frs. You carry a router 😐 amazing. Do you have trouble with electric equipment succumbing to the humidity and salty environment?
No, we keep them pretty well cased and regular sprays with WD40 seems to help. The tool-steel bits are prone to corrosion and take the most care.
:-)
Awesome! (as usual) :-) I really look forward to your videos... Best sailing on the web!
Thanks Paul. It's unfortunate that the refit videos are a bit one-sided with only one of us chatting to the camera but there will be plenty of Pascy again soon.
Luckily for that possum our self sufficiency has a limit when we hit civilization! It does feel good to be able to look after ourselves (and each other) for most of the time.
"Now come on Darling"! Your opossum was much too precious for anything but but survival rations! It really is way cuter than North America's only marsupial, the "Virginia opossum". I love them sincerely but they are not exactly cute ;-) I love the refit series. Its great to see the enthusiasm from both of you. I was looking at my World Map earlier today. I've been some places but of all the Terra incognita I've left, Oz is the place I really want to see. I shall have to "Make it so"! Thanks for the inspiration. Keep up the great work. Tim
Love all the rehab on MAROL! You guys are true yachtsmen in the true sense of the term! See sufficiency is the mantra of a true yachtsman. Capt. Rick
