Our Home on the Reef - Episode 57

Our second episode at Holmes Reef sees us doing our usual reef activities, namely spearfishing, free diving and eating! We also discuss our dive in last week's episode, discover a lost tuna long line and snorkel around a sand cay.  Troy also gives some in depth explanations on our dive gear and bag limits for the infamous blue spotted coral trout.
We hope you enjoy this one patrons, we are publishing this to you as we are out exploring a new patch of reef off Townsville, stay tuned for updates and responses to your comments when we are back in range !

Great smelling fish! You make it so real I can almost taste it. Isabelle has never been able to equilize properly and cant go too deep, so any tips greatly appreciated. Also how to prevent mask fogging when spit wont work? Thanks for always choosing amazing music and clips. Isabelle asks if you might consider introduction to free diving, safety, progressing, breathing and so on. Should one have a watch timer or depth guage for safety?

If the spit won't work, there is still some film on the lens. Scrub it well with dish washing liquid and a scotch brite pad. The glass won't scratch. Sometimes it takes a bit of work but will come good. I will talk a bit more about my process while free diving but I dont think I can really teach it safely over the net. As usual, a few tips might be interesting though. Difficulty equalizing is common and disappointing but practice gently trying to do it while wiggling your jaw up, down, forward and back. Just before a yawn, the way my jaw moves causes my ears to equalize. Try that, see if it works for you as well and try replicating the motion. I think a depth guage is less safe than how you feel about each dive. Clear water with hardly any current is a different dive experience to dirty water, strong current and a recent glimpse of a big tail just visible in the gloom!

What a great episode, the music is tops and I have a hankering for trout cooked in butter and garlic.

We try share a little knowledge each episode. It just keeps trickling out! We are looking forward to plenty of trout dinners this week as we are about to head out to the reef tomorrow.

I really love all of the dive footage. (especially getting to watch the mer-Pascy! ;-) ) That wall reminded me of the only real deep wall I've ever scubaed. Its the back side of Molokini, off Maui in Hawaii. If you guys EVER find your way to Hawaii, I have family on Maui and they are always up for taking in stray cats. And I'll fly out in a double plus hurry to meet you :-)

Very nicely done. Please keep compiling these amazing accounts of your adventures. BTW, how long can you stay under in free diving? Does depth affect that? I should think so. I haven't ever tried.

2 minutes is the limit of comfort for me (Troy) and a little less for Pascy. That said, when spearfishing I prefer a steady 1 minute up, 1 minute down. That's really sustainable all day. Depth does affect it physiologically and mentally (stress/fear)

They are hard to beat in the frying pan and live just about every where there is coral. Thanks for dropping us a line.
