The Fine Art of Sailing Uphill - Episode 45
We've returned from Holmes Reef and made it to Cardwell where we're taking advantage of the 4G internet to upload our latest offering first to you, our patrons.
In this episode we start our 5 week journey south against the trade-winds to Cairns a distance of some 600 nautical miles. We say goodbye to Badu and it’s back to business as usual with plenty of sailing, fishing and shark feeding. We’ll also show you our method for cleaning a haul of squid and the Hitachi technique for draining coconuts!
We're pretty positive about sailing to weather in this episode but you may notice as the episodes progress that it becomes quite draining on us. What's the longest you've ever spent sailing to weather?

Ride that companionway Troy! Hahaha! I love it when it works, frustrating when it doesn't! Looks like the boat was well trimmed tho. Great video once again, whomever(Pascale?) Is editing is doing a stunning job. Keep em coming!..Chris W
Pascale is indeed the primary editor though we both get together and work on the final look and the music. Thanks for your help with keeping them coming!
I actually really enjoy sailing upwind. But I am not coming from a long term cruising background. I love the way the helm movements are tiny, and you can usually sail with a couple of fingers as Troy was doing. I love working the boat through the seas and I think I would always want a boat that can sail to windward well. (S&S34 background showing through again).
It's funny, some days every trim made or adjustment works perfectly and the yacht sings and other days it takes a lot of work to find the groove. I guess that is the real difference between a racing background and cruising- time spent achieving that groove so it comes naturally.
OK so. this was as usual a great vid. Albly Mangles comes to mind. Now I really understand how Pasc. loves you and has never really understood what trust is until you sail. She so loves and trusts you because you can (and has gained her own experience to achieve her own confidence and comfort in her success). On her part its massive confidence as to why its possible - team and relationship effort. Btw you make it look easy, its not. (it can be with time and experience) as you do. make the magic as you are doing we all love it I'm so glad you are being accepted for your own success. XX Pete
Thanks Peter. There's nothing quite like trusting each other with your lives to build a strong bond! We spent a little while on a sandbar recently and I remarked to Pas how calm she was about it. She just said she knew I was handling it and the tide was rising. Can't ask for more than that!
Thanks for the great video guys. Loved it as always
Thank you. These were hard work during filming obviously but are proving quite fun to edit!
Loved the sailing in this episode! Mirool performs so well to windward, no doubt due to how well Troy knows her. It is an absolute pleasure to watch, and to learn from the decisions and the rationale behind them. Enjoyed all the other bits as well. You're both a joy to watch, to learn from, and to be inspired by. Thank you!
Thanks Scott. It was great to get out and do some challenging sailing again after cooling our heels a little during cyclone season.
Loved the vlog, again. You two are amazing! Longest slog I have had was from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to San Diego, CA; close to 900 NM on at the wind in a bash. Fun stuff! Quick question: while bashing to seaward, what is whit the face masks? Is it for solar protection? Or? - All good, Capt. Rick
900NM is nothing to be taken lightly going to weather! No reef to moderate the seas either. The face masks are indeed to cut down on solar exposure. I'm a little wary of constant application of chemical sun protection.
:)
:D
Thanks for a great video! Just what we needed on a Monday morning!
What's the longest time i have ever sailed to windward ?.....7 weeks solid ! That was in the first BT challenge race when we were sailing from Rio De Janeiro to Hobart (Tasmania) across the Southern Ocean. From memory it was full gale conditions at least every 3 days and very cold water. And no....i wouldn't want to do that again.
Yikes that makes any whining we did coming down seem a bit weak! We really do have some accomplished sailors in our audience, it's very pleasing that you would follow our exploits.
Great video, Troy and Pascal. Very entertaining and educational. You've made going to windward look almost dreamy. Very much looking forward to the next chapter.
Cheers Warren how's the boat hunting going!?
I always thought it would be fun to have a good underwater speaker and play music for them, I wonder how they would react ?? I know they are aware of us on the boat, you can see them roll on their sides and look right at you.
Perhaps our depth sounder acts like a dolphin radio?
Great job guys, I really enjoy watching the sailing parts but then I also enjoy the talking parts too LOL. I think the dolphins were having as much fun performing and you were watching them. Wouldn't it be great if we could speak their language ... I wonder what they would tell us about the sea.
Cheers Orville. Those spinner dolphins are so excitable and playful! The best is when they turn their head and look at you on the bow. As we've come into busier waterways around Hinchinbrook they seem less interested in us though!
Hi Troy and Pascal, Great video, I almost feel as though I could sail (LOL) the information and rationale make so much sense. I have gone through my wood storage and have found some Cuban Mahogany that I think will make an excellent frame for the hammerhead print. Keep on sailing, all the best, Tom
Oh good timing, we're about to sail out! We're very gratified by your appreciation of that modest little print. Will you be making the frame yourself? The photo of the finished job is now high on our list of anticipated pleasures.
Quick review note: the link to the Memory Maps software isn't actually in the description of the video. Pascale's voiceover says it will be. Also, I love the longer videos you do (30 minutes rather than 3-5 like other channels), you guys are awesome and don't seem to lack for stuff to show and tell. I watch at 2x speed except for the musical interludes (where I sometimes drop to 1/4 speed to get the ambient effect when you're underwater) but invariably with you two I end up skipping back and re-watching bits because you slip in little details. Which is good, BTW. I love your detailed explanations and the way especially Troy talks through his reasoning.
Thanks so much Moz in our rush to upload we forgot to add the link. And thank you also for your kind words and feedback. We'll keep doing what we're doing!
Great job guys! Keep up the teaching moments!
Cheers Peter. Next week lots of teaching coming up!
