The day our engine made oil - Episode 40
Safely arrived back in the Torres Straits we visit some waterfalls on Prince of Wales Island with some friends.
Throughout this episode, we do the usual boat maintenance, which leads to the discovery that our engine has been making oil! Troy comes up with a temporary fix so we don't have to wait for parts to be sent to us on Thursday Island.
We also take a ride to visit the Goods Island lighthouse and an old World War II observation post. We also drop into to visit the folks at Roko Island fish camp.
And, finally, Troy talks about some important info and FREE navigation software.
This episode also features at 13:20 Navigating the Tidal Streams in the Torres Strait – a must see if you plan on visiting the Torres Straits in a yacht.

Cheers Chris and welcome to the Patreon crew! All the best to you, Pascale
Great vlog peeps! I can't number the times here in Florida I have seen people get into trouble not looking at tidal information. We've nothing that intense, but I have seen people get strained by draw bridges cuz of a 5kt current! Keep up the good vids, always waiting on the next...CW
(oops) avigate OZ, perhaps you will make the big slog across the BIG pond and visit us in San Francisco! We would love to have you and show you some tidal shifts that we have here. Fun stuff! - Rick
We are entertaining dreams of visiting your fair shores and know from past experience how welcoming you guys are over there. Can't wait it's going to be great.
Another great one mates! I particularly enjoyed the segment on tides in the straits. Not planning on being there in the near future, but it was well explained for the local mariner. Looking forward to more vlogs from two intrepid sailors. After you circumn
Diesel lift pump diagnosis, Wart removal advice, scraping only where you can reach easily because of the Croc threat, a visit to a local Beauty spot, and historical notes etc. Oh, to make it a little bit boring, let's talk about Tidal Streams! Failed! Living as I do, almost directly at the southwestern tip of the UK, I can often see what the local boaters are on about with our own version of this, as off Land's End we have quite a few Islets (Rocks) at the joining of the Atlantic, English Channel and Bristol Channel and when the visibility is good, you can stand on the cliffs and with a cheap pair of binoculars see the Eddy currents around groups of some of the Rocks almost trapping the tide on the Ebb! Hard to describe with words, but I'm sure you can understand what I mean. It's not a place to navigate in a small boat unless you Really know what you are in for! No wonder we need Aussie Life Guards to keep the Surfers safe.
The sea is always fairly demanding but there are some places where she becomes positively homicidal. In the Wild With Harry Butler! Best naturalist show EVER! (says the naturalist ;-) )
It took some digging but I just found my Discovery Channel 26 complete episodes on 6 DVDS In The Wild With Harry Butler Box Set! Just watching them on TV around the start of my Naturalist career made a huge impression on me... :-) Now I have something to watch between episodes of FRS!
Another Great episode guys. Love the Wallabies Eskie in the high speed tinny and or course I always enjoy Troy harnessing his inner Harry Butler to provide explanations of our native fauna and flora in this case the figs. Great job guys:)
The inner Harry Butler is never that far from the surface!
Loved the tide discussion. I often find myself studying the charts and using Navionics to help with fuel and time conservation. Nice job!
:)
What a day! FreeRange and SailLife vids within hours of each other! Very useful vid! Thx guys! I use openCPN too alongside a RayMarine CP. Finding charts is a bit of a pain - but they are out there, and it supports quite a few formats. I’m just starting on my NMEA 2k refit... Would love to see a technical tour of your boat some day! Cheers Charlie!
The boat tour is definitely on the list. With patron requests coming first. We use the CM93 chart pack on our open CPN and we think it's pretty great. If you don't have CM93 we can send it to you via Dropbox link?
