Testing out Mei Closures!
Did you know Cheongsam vs Qipao aren't used interchangeably? I originally thought they were the exact same but just the Cantonese vs Mandarin pronunciation. However, those two words have different historical context, origin, and meaning.
Qipao (旗袍)
"Qipao" literally means "banner gown" and originated from the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912).
It was traditionally worn by Manchu women, and were loose, modest, long robe that covered most of the body.
Manchu influence: It was worn with elaborate headpieces and embroidered fabrics, symbolizing high social status.
Over the years, the qipao has evolved into a more tight-fitting, modernized version in the 1920s and 1930s.
Cheongsam (長衫)
Comes from the Cantonese word "cheuhngsaam" (長衫), meaning "long dress" and was originally work by Chinese men.
It became widely used in Hong Kong and by overseas Chinese communities.
In modern English, "cheongsam" and qipao can be interchangeable.
Now that you know my new little historical hyper fixation, I am happy to be relieved that I referred to the Mei design as a cheongsam, because the term is interchangeable. As a Cantonese Asian American learning more about her own culture, I want to refer it more as a cheongsam.
Currently, I am testing out different closure methods because I want the Mei pattern to be as able-bodied as it can be. With the traditional Pankou knots (Chinese frog closures) can be hard to close with my clumsy hands so for this test, I used buttons and a back zipper. It worked, honestly easier to put on than expected! I have two more tests I want to attempt and will be sharing the results.
Your favorite stabber,
Wendy

Oo thanks for the explanation on the different terms! I was super confused about it too and haven't had a chance to look into it yet :D Does the back zipper go all the way up? I think I missed any pics you had on it.
😌 you have a great eye!! I originally had a photo of the back.. and realized I never zipped it all the way down 😆 The zipper does not go all the way up but I do plan on testing which one I'd prefer! Currently, it stops right before the end of the collar. I'm trying to find examples of backs with a full zipper attached
Hey Wendy! Love the denim pics and the video you did on the history.
Why thank you so much Thomas for the support 🥹
