Making a dragon dress PART TWO | Patreon Version

So, as per usual, this video and dress took several days longer than I had both allowed and expected. I genuinely thought the dress just needed a hem. And that was all it needed, but I was really unhappy with the shape—so panels were added to the skirt pretty late in the game (by that I mean two days ago).

Somehow getting this video down from a rough cut of 72 minutes to 34 has taken up ten hours of my Sunday, so I didn’t quite make the early morning upload time I was shooting for.

But honestly, missing it was kind of refreshing? Because it means I can take my time getting good photos of it without rushing like I expected to do ever since making major changes to this gown on Friday.

Even having that weight off of me this afternoon led to me playing around with jewelry and finally getting a matching headpiece to the point where I'm excited to wear it. And things always turn out better when you aren't rushing and working off of obligation.

And I feel like this video will be better if I reflect on it and perhaps re-edit a few bits after a day or two of space between it and making it public.

But I did promise this would be up on Sunday, so here is a 95% complete version of it. It is missing worn photos (because I haven’t taken them yet) and upon a final watch through I realized the need for some better transitions--or perhaps even shifting the clips so the skirt/sleeve/underdress sections are less sporadic feeling.

But all the making of footage is there if that is all you are after!

And if you just want to see how it turned out, here are some photos of it.

Thank you so much for the support on last weeks video and through this all. I’m going to have a patreon exclusive video up this week and hopefully a chatty blog-style update sometime before the end of the month.

I actually hoped to finish a Bridgerton dress before the premiere (missed that deadline by a mile. Er. Month.) and have been itching to share [re, complain about] that project, lol.

I hope all of you had a great weekend!

On the topic of kindness and deserving it. Only person you deserve kindness from is yourself. That takes bit of an effort. Other people will be kind and you should just accept. Think about how it is lot easier to be kind with other people than yourself. I am glad you are able to create again.

So, so (sew? sew?) glad to see you back! I have missed your videos and wild creations. I hope you continue to feel better and are encouraged to make more. I love your eye for mixing patterns and fabric textures - it is an amazing talent. This dress is amazing and makes a perfect reintroduction! Stay well and keep on fighting.

I am one of the many many people that you inspired when you were a cute teen sewing outlandish fantasy costumes, you inspired my forage into vintage clothing and reproduction sewing, you inspire love for fantasy and going for the wild unattainable and yet somehow possible when it comes to creating dreams in real life. I have to thank you for all of this but also Drag Race! I started watching it in 2019 because of your random blurb in videos of what you were watching while sewing and it quickly became and obsession for myself and my daughter who discovered an entire queer visibility that helped her come to terms with why she felt different than all of her friends. Drag helps everyone. In the great words of Mother, we're born naked and the rest is drag. 🖤🖤🖤❤️❤️❤️💜💜💜 Also you of course deserve kindness! Always! And I'll be very unkind to anyone who tells you differently lol

Aww that is awesome, all of that! It is wild how a random mention can inspire that sort of interest but I'm so glad you did! It isn't a perfect show but I'm so happy that it has become more mainstream and brought all that creativity, style, and representation into the world in a way where people can see it and feel more accepted because of it 🥺💕

You know what I really love about this particular project? It looks like you just had fun with it. You played with the fabrics, argued about certain aspects, and decided to change the design halfway through; and you sound almost perky(?) about it. I love that for you, I love that you got some simple, pure joy out of something; and I especially love that once the deadline passed, you felt able to just roll with it. Love the dress, love having you sew again, but really love that you felt you could fun with this a bit.

Angela Clayton · June 30, 2024

Haha I was not perky about it at all, but I had come to terms with it by the time I picked up the camera, lol. And yes--it was not an easy first project back, but it really tickled my desire to play with fabrics and stretched the problem solving muscles! i'm glad you like it, and thank you so much for the kind comment! 💕

I am so incredibly happy to see you today!! I love your somewhat chaotic voice overs, you make me giggle and smile when I am feeling down and my brain goes haywire wanting to create something similar just for funsies! You…..are…..incredible and I adore you!

Thank you for explaining about the horsehair braid! Last time I used it in one of my projects it looked so bad that I ended up ripping it out and giving it to my cats to play with. I was using the kind without the thread on a curved edge and now I know why it didn't work!

A
Angela Clayton · June 30, 2024

Yup that would do it! It can also warp when you are sewing it on and it forces the hem to be wavy, always. It is a fickle beast. and in future, you can add a thread to normal horsehair braid in a pinch, it is just a bit tedious!

Heck yeah! I'm so excited that you felt like you got to push right past the deadline. I feel like doing that can really help push off the feelings of doing it because you have to. Basically just like what you said. But awesome dude. I'm so excited to see stuff from you again!

It is a delicate balance because a deadline is the only reason this dress exists at all, but I wanted to do it more justice than the timeline allowed.

Yay, you are back. Deadlines sucks, even self imposing ones. Seeing your videos again is making want to sew again. Looking forwards to seeing more of your makes. Take time with your edits it is less stressful. A perk of being your own boss, By the by, where is the lovely green blouse/dress in the intro from??

Also will you please share pictures of you wearing it on here when you get those?

Omg I used to do a lot of product photography and the soup cans thing is so real lmao. We're all so overjoyed that you're returning to creating fun things again! We won't mind if the video is late (especially because it seems like missing the deadline was a great idea) and we also don't mind if you don't finish an entire dress in a week (because that's actually crazy). Also I had to do the same sleeve puzzle when I designed Astarion's pattern from BG3! I wanted as little finishing as possible with an open cuff as well - it works really well!! And brain gymnastics aside, a total energy-saver. I just clipped carefully and topstitched/edgestitched to control the pucker. See you in the next video! xx

Sometimes half the battle of making a pretty dress is in how deceptively it is photographed 😂 I'm glad it worked out (and that you could sort of tell what I was doing, lol)! I feel like with a thinner fabric and less trim it would have been excellent, but with all the piecing and double lining it got really lumpy and I was so excited it was working I didn't stop long enough to think about how it could work better before declaring it done. Oh well.
