TKSSS:STA — Chapter 59 - 60: Locked in Deadlock

"You don't know anything."

"You don't even know what his Zanpakutō looks like. You don't even know its name. You came here to fish for information and nothing else."

Purplish-red Reiatsu erupted from within him like a waterfall, spreading fast across the desert floor in every direction. Where it passed, space itself began to fracture. Baraggan's voice rose sharply, each word forced out from between skeletal teeth, drenched in rage and humiliation held too long.

"First you kill two of my confidants, then you treat the King of Hueco Mundo like some fool to milk for intelligence—your life alone won't cover it. I will make you into a specimen far worse than those failures rotting in the ruins. I will strip the crown of all Hueco Mundo and place it inside your skull. And that woman beside you is going into the ground with you!"

A few minutes earlier, Seijūrō had posed as a Soul Society representative, negotiating with Baraggan about jointly eliminating the mastermind pulling the strings. He had used Baraggan's humiliation at being subjugated as leverage, steering that hatred where he needed it to go. He'd pulled out a great deal: three opponents, all captain-level. The mastermind specialized in psychological warfare and verbal provocation, wielded a high-level illusion-type Zanpakutō, and could manipulate perception directly.

Then the battle erupted.

Soi Fon vanished first.

Not a single Shunpo, several in rapid succession. Her afterimages appeared across multiple points on the desert sands at once, each landing precisely in the gap between one axe swing and the next.

Suzumebachi was already drawn, its tip angled low. She was waiting for Seijūrō's first Hadō.

Seijūrō raised his right hand. Hadō #4, Byakurai, fired first.

Pale lightning tore through the air and drove straight at Baraggan's face. He lifted his double-bladed battle axe and caught it on the edge. Purplish-red corrosive Reiatsu swallowed the bolt whole.

The instant the lightning died, Soi Fon was already inside his blind spot. Suzumebachi thrust at his spine.

A surge of black mist swept in and curled around him.

She pulled back and retreated, clearing Baraggan's backhanded axe swing by a breath before the blade grazed the fabric at her shoulder. She was back at Seijūrō's right side before it finished its arc.

The second approach came immediately after Seijūrō's Hadō #33, Sōkatsui.

Eerie blue flame detonated directly in front of Baraggan. The black mist was forced to slam inward, condensing along the axe blade in a rush.

Soi Fon dropped low, circling along his right side toward his back. Suzumebachi locked onto the crease behind his right knee. She drove it in during the split-second pause after the axe swung back.

The tip was a hair from bone.

Without warning, a savage surge of Reiatsu collapsed inward around Baraggan and compressed itself into a sphere.

"Cero."

A purplish-black Cero detonated at point-blank range, not fired from his hand, but erupting directly out of his body, right beside her.

Soi Fon abandoned the thrust and activated Utsusemi in the same instant. The afterimage she left behind was swallowed by the Cero. Her real body landed several paces back. The black clothing across her upper body had been torn to shreds by the shockwave, leaving only a thin undergarment clinging to her shoulders.

She did not look down.

The third approach launched in tandem with Seijūrō's Bakudō. Six sheets of light from Rikujōkōrō locked onto Baraggan's limbs from the void. They shattered the moment they touched the black mist, but the brief disruption broke the rhythm of his axe swing just long enough.

Soi Fon cut straight into his front. Suzumebachi traced the path of the shattered light and thrust into his left wrist joint.

The blade pierced through the purple membrane before it could re-thicken, and seared a complete purplish-black Nigeki Kessatsu mark onto the bone.

Baraggan lowered his head. He stared at the slow spread of the mark across his left wrist.

The two points of purplish-red light inside his skeletal eye sockets contracted sharply. He said nothing.

The black mist surged as if by instinct, swirling at extreme speed between every point Suzumebachi had struck, wrapping his entire torso in a dense purplish-black storm. Even the burning light of his eye sockets was swallowed by it, leaving only two faint red gleams flickering somewhere deep in the fog.

"He's realized the danger of Nigeki Kessatsu."

Seijūrō raised both hands. Hadō #73, Sōren Sōkatsui, and Hadō #63, Raikōhō, alternated in a relentless barrage against Baraggan's front.

Eerie blue detonations and golden lightning exploded in turn across the desert sky. Baraggan did not stand and take it.

He raised his battle axe and met each blast head-on, and then mid-block, without warning, he threw a horizontal slash. A blade-wave of purple corrosive energy peeled off the axe edge and flew straight at Seijūrō.

Seijūrō broke off his attack and dodged right. The corrosive blade grazed his left shoulder and sheared away a clean strip of fabric from his sleeve. He tore the rest off fast. By the time the cloth hit the sand, it had already dissolved into ash.

Baraggan gave him no room to breathe.

A second corrosive slash chased his landing point. He twisted clear.

A third cut off his retreat to the left. A fourth cleaved down from above and sealed his jump trajectory.

He was being herded, forced to throw up Dankū again and again just to keep from being eaten alive, the distance between him and Soi Fon widening with every cast.

Seijūrō wrenched himself right and accelerated hard. Hadō #58, Tenran, spun a tornado at his side that pulled the pursuing blade-wave straight into the vortex. The Tenran's Reishi structure broke apart the instant it made contact with the purplish-red corrosive energy, but the rotational pressure deflected the strike by half a body's width. The corrosive slash grazed the outside of his right arm and buried itself in the sand.

He used the opening. He aimed at Baraggan and fired Hadō #63, Raikōhō.

Golden thunder roared across the distance, but it was too far. Baraggan deflected it easily with his axe, and the black mist swallowed the lightning before it could do anything.

No real damage. But the opening had served its purpose. He hadn't needed the hit. He'd needed to watch the black mist.

In that instant, he caught something critical.

When Baraggan blocked close-quarters Hadō, the black mist surged toward the axe blade and his front, that was the pattern they'd been working with from the start. But even while driving Seijūrō back with ranged corrosive slashes, the mist across his front had stayed evenly distributed. Maintaining multiple ranged attacks hadn't opened a single visible gap anywhere on his body.

Only when he blocked Raikōhō had the mist over his chest thinned, briefly, but it had.

This meant Baraggan could hold the density of the black mist across every part of his body at once. It wasn't drawn from a finite pool. As long as he was breathing, every position could be held at peak density simultaneously.

The thinning at his chest wasn't because he'd redirected the mist. It was because blocking a head-on impact forced him to concentrate it onto the axe blade, if he didn't, the shockwave would punch straight through the mist and shatter his bones. The mist had to go somewhere, and it chose the threat.

Exactly like Senbonzakura.

Long ago, during a training session, Seijūrō had asked Byakuya a question. Senbonzakura's blades attacked without discrimination, so why was Byakuya himself never cut while standing inside Senkei?

He still remembered the answer.

Senbonzakura's blades were vast in number, and every one was under his mental control when Senkei was active. But when the blades returned to surround him, they had to pass through the space where he stood. If that space wasn't kept clear, a fraction of them—moving at that speed, at the edge of conscious control—would cut him.

It wasn't a matter of precision. It was self-preservation instinct.

Baraggan's black mist worked the same way.

His body was wrapped in aging miasma that killed on contact. Yet he dared to let the surrounding mist thin while concentrating it at his chest, because he knew his chest was the last line of defense. If the mist rolled back inward against his own body, his own power of aging would corrode him.

The Cero from earlier was proof. When Soi Fon had struck at point-blank range, he could have pushed the black mist over to drive her back. He hadn't. He'd chosen Cero instead.

A Cero wouldn't hurt him. The black mist would.

It wasn't that he didn't want to use it. He didn't dare bring it too close.

The black mist formed a ring of defense centered on his body, too close and it would eat him, too far and an enemy could break through. Between the ring and his own skin, there had to be a narrow vacuum. A dead zone. The same safe space Byakuya held for himself inside Senbonzakura's Senkei.

If he could force the black mist to the inner edge of that zone, Baraggan would face a choice: pull back, or take damage from his own power.

"His black mist has a safe zone, same as Senbonzakura's Senkei. He's afraid of his own mist. He won't let it get close enough to touch him."

Seijūrō moved toward Soi Fon, keeping his voice low, laying out everything he'd just worked out. Then he finished the rest. "I'm going to use a forbidden Kidō that Iwakizhi Tetsusai taught me. Next time, we lock the black mist and the Nigeki Kessatsu into the same impossible bind at once—give him only one side he can deal with."

Soi Fon didn't ask anything. She simply adjusted the angle of her thrust and held it there. They moved into the final combination, everything on the line.

Seijūrō raised both hands. The incantation for Hadō #88, Hiryūgekizokushintenraihō, moved past his lips in a low and rapid current, and an eerie blue beam erupted forward.

Baraggan raised his battle axe to block. The black mist slammed onto the axe blade. Seijūrō kept firing, Sōkatsui, Raikōhō, Red Fire Cannon, one after the next, all driving into the exact same point.

Baraggan's axe held. But the black mist at his chest was forced to surge forward all at once.

In that narrow gap, Soi Fon's Suzumebachi had already arrived, lower left, inside the vacuum the mist had left behind.

Seijūrō formed a hand seal. His fingertips drew an ultra-fine silver line through the air. The incantation rose from somewhere deep in his throat, each syllable like water drawn up from the bottom of a cold and ancient well, sinking into the sand as it fell.

"Inscribed at the base of the netherworld, condensed at the end of the primordial. All phenomena drift away with the passing stream; this breath alone cannot be moved. In the name of the Grand Kidō Chief of the Kidō Corps—I command this realm to stand still."

Time stopped.

The purplish-red mist surrounding Baraggan froze into countless suspended particles, motionless in the air.

In the same instant the time stop fell, Soi Fon cut to his front. Suzumebachi drove into the exact spot already marked by the first Nigeki Kessatsu, the left wrist joint.

Nigeki Kessatsu triggered.

The moment time resumed, the purplish-black crest detonated outward from the crossing point.

Baraggan looked down at the lethal brand spreading rapidly across his left wrist. Then he did something Soi Fon hadn't anticipated.

He plunged his entire left wrist into the black mist he had never dared to touch. And he tore his own wrist free at the root.

He threw it. The severed hand, doubly branded by Nigeki Kessatsu, its bone fragments eaten through by the aura of aging, flew straight at Soi Fon like a projectile dipped in venom. It cut a purplish-black arc through the air.

She tried to dodge with Shunpo. Her depleted Reiatsu slowed her landing by half a beat. The severed hand caught her in the left chest. Black mist began spreading along the fabric.

Seijūrō's Bakudō had already left his hand.

Not Dankū. Not Rikujōkōrō. A slender golden chain of light shot from his fingertips and wrapped around Soi Fon's shoulders.

He yanked back hard, pulling her entire body clear of the spreading mist and into his arms.

Her upper body was down to a single shredded layer of undergarment, and the spot where the severed hand had grazed her was spreading purplish-black decay outward along the fabric's edge, visible in real time.

Seijūrō didn't hesitate.

He tore away what remained of the undergarment and threw it. It turned to ash in midair before it hit the ground, the residual black mist finishing what the impact had started.

He didn't look at her. He stripped off his own battered, slash-torn jacket and wrapped it around her.

Both of them were breathing hard. Their Reiatsu rose and fell in ragged, uneven waves.

Baraggan stood several paces away. His severed left wrist was still bleeding purplish-red Reiatsu into the air. He had hoisted the massive double-bladed battle axe onto his shoulder with his one remaining arm. Where his entire left forearm had been, there was nothing, only the aura of aging seeping out drop by drop along the jagged cross-section of bone.

The two points of purplish-red light in his skeletal eye sockets fixed on the two Shinigami in front of him. Clearly spent. Not retreating. His voice came out hoarse and low, each word ground up from somewhere beneath the deepest layer of bone under his throne.

"First it was three Shinigami. Smiling as they forced me to kneel on those steps. Looking down at me with that blade in hand, telling me Hueco Mundo was still mine—only that I answered to him now. And now two more. You slaughter my confidants on my own territory. You've reduced the complete King of Hueco Mundo to this."

He drove the battle axe into the ground. Purplish-red corrosive Reiatsu erupted outward with him at the center, and the entire desert shook.

"Did you think the throne of Las Noches was built from dust? Did you think Baraggan was nothing more than a Vasto Lorde who clings to his life?"

The purplish-red Reiatsu around him swelled violently, no longer the passive miasma drifting off his body, but something he was actively compressing, forcing it into a colossal black vortex with himself at the center. Reishi drained from across the entire desert toward that core. Quartz sand dissolved silently into powder and was pulled in. His voice erupted from within the maelstrom, every word carrying the fury of something that had been rotting worlds long before these two were born.

"I will corrode you both. From this moment on, this desert will not leave a single speck of Reishi for you to breathe."

Chapter 58 - Sacrifice

The two pinpricks of purplish-red light in Baraggan's skeletal eye sockets had stopped wavering. Like two falling meteors, they locked straight onto Seijūrō and Soi Fon as he raised his battle-ax high with his right hand.

The purplish-black miasma of death no longer coated his body evenly. Instead it swirled and condensed around the ax, rapidly, violently, liquefying from mist into a boiling churning sludge of purplish-black.

He poured every last shred of humiliation into the blade, all those rounds of being suppressed by Seijūrō and Soi Fon, back and forth across this wasteland. The air above the desert hummed under the weight of the swelling death-miasma, a low resonant pressure that rose until it was felt in the chest.

"I will rot both of you away. From this moment on, there will not be a single mote of Reishi left in this wasteland for you to breathe!"

Boiling purplish-black miasma erupted from the tip of the ax and surged into a sky-splitting tsunami.

Its height swallowed the moonlight whole. Their entire field of vision became nothing but that advancing wall of liquid decay, closing in.

Quartz sand swept into the air by the outer shockwaves crumbled to ash before it could fall back down.

Soi Fon pressed her hand against Seijūrō's shoulder, her voice hoarse and weak, torn apart by the gale the tsunami drove ahead of itself: "...Run. Leave me — on your own you can still—" She never finished.

Seijūrō spun and tackled her to the ground. He braced his arms on either side of her, put his back to the oncoming wall of death, and pinned her entirely beneath him. Bakudō #81, Dankū, unfolded above his head. The translucent barrier had barely formed before the tsunami's leading edge hit it, the whole structure shook violently, cracks spidering across its surface, the Reishi lattice emitting a rapid series of sharp, glass-shattering sounds as the purplish-black liquid crushed against it.

"Idiot! You'll die — drop it! You can still escape alone!"

Soi Fon struggled frantically beneath him, but her right arm was completely gone, and the tip of Suzumebachi in her left hand had long since dropped out of Shikai, jammed uselessly upside down in the sand. All she could do was drive her knee into his leg. Her voice was forced low, yet it kept climbing in pitch, until there was nothing left in her throat but desperate, airless rasps.

Seijūrō did not answer. He braced his arms tighter. His body did not move.

The tsunami hit Dankū. With one massive shattering crack, the barrier exploded into countless fragments of light.

Then everything stopped.

Not Time Stop, the tsunami itself collapsed. Just before it swallowed them both, it burst open from the center. The purplish-black liquid lost whatever was holding it together and rolled back on both sides like a wave cleaved down the middle by a blade. The Reishi flash-evaporated from liquid back to mist, and then the eternal cold wind of Hueco Mundo swept through and scattered it from the sky entirely.

What replaced it was a single muffled sound from Baraggan himself. A groan, hoarse and short, like something had punched clean through the center of his chest from behind, straight through the spot where every last scrap of his miasma had been gathered.

Seijūrō raised his head.

Baraggan still stood where he had been. A Cero of tremendous thickness had blasted through his torso from back to front, leaving a gaping hole. His spine was severed in the middle of the cavity. His upper body was barely half a skeletal frame, held together by a few fractured ribs. His left arm was gone, nothing but an empty forearm hanging. His right arm still clutched the double-bladed ax. The two pinpricks of purplish-red light in his eye sockets shook violently. His whole frame teetered but did not fall.

He turned his head and forced a name through what remained of his skeletal teeth.

"Harribel... you bastard..."

A high-pressure blade of water answered him.

It traced a clean, straight blue line across the sky above the wasteland and shattered what was left of his skull. The purplish-red Reiatsu flickered faintly one last time among the scattered bone fragments, then went dark.

The double-bladed ax slipped from the finger bones of his right hand. It dropped heavily into the quartz sand. The body of Baraggan Louisenbairn toppled slowly onto the wasteland he had corroded so many times over, his remains scattering across the ground.

Seijūrō was still on his knees, arms still braced in the posture that had kept Soi Fon beneath him.

Soi Fon turned her head from his chest. Her light gray eyes moved past his shoulder toward the scattered pile of skeletal remains.

Neither of them spoke. Then a low, quiet female voice came from behind Baraggan's corpse.

"When the tsunami came, you did not leave her. Not until the last moment. You chose to trade your own life for hers. That is sacrifice, and it deserves recognition."

Seijūrō turned his head.

In the moonlight, an enormous shark Hollow swam slowly out from the shadows behind Baraggan.

Her lower body was fully submerged beneath the sea of sand. Only a wide dorsal fin cut through the quartz surface, tracing a silent arc. Her upper body emerged from the sand, covered in fine pale gray scales that caught the moonlight with a cool, metallic sheen. Her lines were fluid and powerful. Her mask was nothing like the grotesque faces of other Hollows, shark-tooth ridges extended forward from both cheekbones, converging at the jaw into a clean, sharp arc. Her dark green eyes watched them without expression.

"Tier Harribel."

Her voice wasn't loud. It still cut through the entire wasteland, where sand was still raining down in thin curtains. "These are my companions, Apache, Mila Rose, and Sung-Sun."

Several Hollows emerged from behind her in turn. A python Hollow slithered slowly into Seijūrō's peripheral vision, its scales gleaming cold under the moonlight, its slit eyes passing over Baraggan's remains before its tongue flicked out. A lion Hollow followed, stepping from the shadows of the withered quartz forest with a gait that was unhurried and heavy, its mane drifting in the night wind. Last came an antelope Hollow with long, slender limbs, taking its place on Harribel's other side.

Soi Fon forced herself to prop up her upper body. She gripped Seijūrō's arm, he was still kneeling in front of her, and used it to drag herself to her feet. Her lips were pressed white.

Harribel tilted her head slightly. Her tone was level, like someone stating a fact that had existed for a long time and had only now found a moment to be said aloud.

"Long ago, before the Shinigami suppressed him, Baraggan invited me to join his ranks. I refused. His way of ruling Hueco Mundo was endless devouring and slaughter, sacrificing the weak to build his own power. I could not accept that. True sacrifice is not consuming others. It is choosing to pay the price for something you want to protect. The way you just did."

She paused. Beneath the sand, her shark tail swayed gently, nudging aside a few grains of quartz.

"I met them during my travels. Each of them had once faced the hunt of a Menos alone. I have never been willing to grow stronger by killing, so even when Menos attack us, I choose not to devour them, not to kill them. But I will not let my companions be sacrificed for nothing, either." Her dark green eyes shifted from Soi Fon back to Seijūrō. "What you did for her today is the same thing I do for them. That is why I came."

She turned to the companions behind her. There was a soft rustling, and several clean garments were set down before Soi Fon, plain cloth woven from some fiber found deep in Hueco Mundo, coarse but clean. Another set was passed to Seijūrō.

"Further ahead there are several concealed supply points. You can rest there. Baraggan is dead. We will handle the remnants, elimination and subjugation."

Harribel turned and swam back toward the depths of the wasteland. The sea of sand parted behind her in a thin, clean ripple and was quickly smoothed flat again by the cold eternal wind. Her dorsal fin had already traveled a long way into the dark before her voice drifted back, faint and unhurried.

"Hueco Mundo owes you a debt, Shinigami. Next time you come, I hope we are not enemies."

.

When Soi Fon pulled him up from the sand, neither of them said a word.

The supply point Harribel had mentioned was a remnant from a previous Expeditionary Force, hidden on the leeward side of a withered quartz forest. A few leaning stone pillars enclosed a relatively flat patch of sand. In the corner sat several folded pieces of plain cloth and two sealed containers of fresh water.

Seijūrō slid down against a pillar and stayed there, his right arm hanging completely at his side, the Asauchi in his left hand planted in the sand.

Soi Fon sat across from him, back against another pillar. Her right arm was loosely wrapped with the cloth Harribel had left. The burn on her shoulder where the Cero had grazed her was still seeping blood, but her breathing had steadied.

"These past few days have been completely surreal."

Seijūrō's voice was hoarse, wrung out. The back of his head rested against the rough quartz pillar. He laughed anyway.

"First Ulquiorra, uninterested in everything, observing from start to finish, nothing more. Then the lonely Starrk and Lilynette, looking for friends and somehow landing on Shinigami. And after Baraggan, Harribel, a Vasto Lorde who refuses to devour her own kind, refuses to grow stronger through slaughter, and believes in sacrifice. My whole life I've been standing in classrooms in the Soul Society telling students that Hollows are corrupted souls. And every single Vasto Lorde I've run into out here — every one of them except Baraggan — has slapped me in the face with that." He paused. "Actually, that's not right. Baraggan slapped me in the face just as hard."

He had barely finished when a foot caught him square in the face.

It wasn't a heavy kick, but the angle was vicious, the sole came down right on the bridge of his nose and knocked him sideways off the pillar.

"What the, " Seijūrō clutched his nose and turned his head.

Soi Fon's light gray eyes were burning. She had already scrambled up from the opposite pillar and dropped to one knee in front of him, her left hand fisting in his collar to pin him back against the stone. Her right arm was still wrapped in bandages. Her lips were pressed bloodless. Her chest heaved. Her eyes were red at the edges, tears not yet fallen, her whole body trembling in small, continuous shivers.

"What did you mean just now."

Her voice was very low. Not calm, something was right at the edge of spilling over, and she was holding it down by force.

"You could have run on your own. Why didn't you? Dankū had already shattered. Your Reiatsu was completely gone. What made you think you could stop Baraggan's death tsunami? Shielding me with your own body, what was that supposed to be? A mantis trying to stop a chariot?"

"I, " Seijūrō opened his mouth. Then he realized he genuinely had nothing.

In that split second, his mind had run no calculations at all. No distance, no Reiatsu expenditure, no assessment of how much was left in Dankū. He had seen her kneeling in the sand unable to raise her right arm, and his body had moved.

"Heat of the moment. Reflex."

"A reflex?!" Soi Fon's voice cracked upward. The fingers wrapped in his collar turned white at the knuckles. "Do you know how close that tsunami was to you? Once Dankū shattered, all you had left was your own body standing between it and me! I told you to run. Why didn't you run?! You, "

"Come on, think about it," Seijūrō raised his good left hand in a placating gesture. "If I bought enough time, survived the first wave, stayed behind to hold him off, you're far better at Shunpo than I am. You take the intelligence and get back. That's the sensible play. That's what you were thinking too, right? So, "

"You think I was worried about the intelligence."

Her voice dropped. All at once, something that had been holding broke loose from somewhere deep in her throat, and the sound drained out of her words, leaving them hollow and airless halfway out.

"You think when I watched you turn your back to that tsunami, what was in my head was, 'if he dies here, the intelligence doesn't make it back'? You think I'm angry because you disrupted my tactics?"

She let go of his collar. Her head dropped. The stray hair over her forehead fell across her eyes. Her shoulders were shaking hard, and tears slipped through her lowered lashes.

"All I thought was one thing. If you died, what would I do. I'm not the Squad 2 Captain. I'm not the Commander-in-Chief of the Onmitsukidō. I'm not some heir to the Shihōin Clan. I'm just someone Yoruichi left behind in the Soul Society. She didn't leave a single word for me when she went. I thought all I had left was to die on some mission eventually, keep watch over the Shihōin Clan in her place, give the name Soi Fon a decent enough ending. But you, from the very beginning, you've always thrown my plans off. You brought me briefings on how the Kidō Corps needed to coordinate with the Onmitsukidō. You stood by the window in my office and taught me how to face enemies and lead subordinates. You sat in the archives and helped me piece together torn pages from division records. You made me feel like the hollow place Yoruichi left behind was slowly being filled."

She raised her head and looked at him. Tears ran down her jaw. Her voice was wrecked, barely more than a rasp, but she kept going, one word at a time.

"I never knew what it felt like to be put first. Now I do. You treat your own life like it's nothing — a reflex, something done in passing — but to me it's the one thing in this life that should never be thrown away. I don't want to be left behind again. I don't want to stand alone in an empty captain's office staring at a Zanpakutō on the wall. I, I want you beside me."

Seijūrō looked at her.

He looked at this Squad 2 Captain, known throughout Soul Society for being cold, unyielding, relentless, kneeling in front of him in the sand while tears ran down her face without stopping.

She was not the Soi Fon who had stared down every challenge before Central 46 with frozen eyes. She was not the Commander-in-Chief who drilled her subordinates past the point of collapse and kept going. She was just a girl terrified of losing someone who mattered, emptying out every last thing she had kept sealed for decades. He lifted his good left hand and brushed his thumb across her cheek.

Soi Fon's body went rigid for a moment.

Then she reached out, grabbed his collar, and pulled him toward her. He had no strength left to resist. His back hit the pillar again. She pressed herself against him, one hand braced against the stone beside his ear, the other drawing him in against her chest. He caught the scent of blood from her collarbone, and underneath it, something faint and soft.

Then she looked down into his eyes and let her only remaining jacket, along with the plain cloth Harribel had left them, slide down to her waist.

The burn on her shoulder was a raw, faintly reddened patch of skin, showing a very faint layer of fine down in the moonlight. Her collarbone was more slender than Yoruichi's, her frame a notch narrower at the shoulders. Her skin was pale white, nothing like Yoruichi's sun-deepened brown, more like fine jade that had spent a long time soaking in moonlight, translucent and delicate, the faint tracery of veins beneath her collarbone just barely visible.

Her figure lacked Yoruichi's full, lush curves, but it had a lean precision all its own, not a single line that was soft where it shouldn't be, every contour exactly in accord with a body shaped by years of relentless training. Her abdomen was a clean map of tight muscle, each line looking as though it had been carved there by countless repetitions of Shunpo, flat and strong.

Her hips were narrow. The hem of her undergarments had pressed faint shallow lines into her flanks. Near her navel, several small old scars marked where Yoruichi's training had left its permanent record on her, years ago.

Seijūrō did not look away. He lifted his left hand and let his fingertips trace slowly downward along the intersecting lines of muscle on her side. His palm brushed the narrow edge of her hip and came to rest on those old scars, meeting the tears still in her eyes with a gaze that was unhurried and steady and did not flinch.

He cradled her injured right hand and bent down to press his lips against the edge of the burn beside the bandages on her shoulder.

Soi Fon closed her eyes. She rested her chin in the hollow of his shoulder and let him draw her back against his chest. Moonlight lay across them both for a long time. The shadows of the withered quartz forest stretched over the sand around them. The plain cloth Harribel had left lay scattered across the ground. The wounds that Baraggan's corrosive Reiatsu had torn through them again and again still ached in the deep, dull way that wounds do when the fighting is finally over.

But neither of them could bring themselves to care about that now.
