Chapter 51: Passing a Message
The eternal night of Hueco Mundo knew no end.
A cold moon hung dead center in the sky, turning the white desert into a borderless expanse of silver-gray salt flats.
Quartz sand crunched softly underfoot with every step, each footprint faint and quickly swept away by the wind. The Reishi concentration in the air was thick enough that each breath felt like something pressing against the lungs, and the skin felt like it was soaking in faintly warm water.
A few paces ahead and to the side, Soi Fon crouched behind a quartz boulder, the hem of her black field clothes swaying lightly in the sandy wind. Her gaze swept in a constant rotation across every direction, right hand resting lightly on her Zanpakutō's hilt, left hand hanging naturally at her side. Every so often she flashed a brief hand signal to Seijūrō, "Rear clear," "Residual Hollow Reiatsu at the edge of the left-forward quartz forest, dissipated," "Continue advancing."
"Same as the batch you found last time?" She didn't look back. Her voice was low, but in the dead silence of Hueco Mundo it carried clearly enough.
"Same design, same Reishi coating." Seijūrō packed the fragment into a sealed pouch, noted the coordinates and collection time in his logbook, then stood and brushed the quartz sand from his hands. "Probably products of the same experimental batch, discarded here once they were done with them. Whoever is behind this ran experiments in more than one place — there are traces of abandonment in both the outer and inner rings. The cave we're heading to next should be one of them."
"When you came alone last time, was this the area where you mapped the Gillian patrol routes?"
"About half a day deeper in, Gillian density noticeably increases. Last time I staked out the edge of the Forest of Menos for several hours before finding an opening. With proper equipment this time, our efficiency should be much higher."
Soi Fon stood up from behind the boulder and brushed the quartz sand from her knees.
"Your Shunpo lags under high Reishi density. If we get ambushed, don't try to tough it out. I handle forward scouting; you handle sampling and recording."
"Your Reiatsu perception range is broader than mine — stay within communication distance. Hueco Mundo doesn't have Soul Society's barrier protections. Any Reiatsu fluctuation gets amplified by the environment. The moment you detect unknown Reiatsu approaching, pull back to cover immediately."
"I don't need you to tell me that."
Soi Fon turned and took the lead, heading deeper into the desert. Her stride was quick and light; the hem of her black field clothes barely grazed the quartz sand, the faint impressions of her toes vanishing behind her almost as fast as they formed.
Seijūrō followed off her flank. The two of them held a fixed tactical distance between them, a rhythm they had worked out over the past several days.
Along the way they passed dried quartz riverbeds and rock walls eaten by wind into honeycomb shapes. Every time they reached a fork, Soi Fon would instinctively cut in first to clear it, give Seijūrō a nod once it was safe, then step aside to let him take samples.
While Seijūrō crouched at the base of a rock wall scanning the Reishi residue in the crevices with a portable instrument, she stood watch at a high vantage point nearby, her gaze sweeping the open ground like a hawk. Once he sealed the sample and finished writing the coordinates, she moved on without a word.
At the edge of a petrified quartz forest, they stopped to rest. Seijūrō leaned against a half-collapsed quartz trunk and took a few sips from his canteen. Soi Fon sat on rubble across from him, breaking her rations into small pieces and chewing slowly. Neither of them spoke. Only the wind moved through the quartz trees in Hueco Mundo's endless night.
Seijūrō watched her profile. Her short straight-cut hair had been roughed up by the wind and sand, but those light gray eyes still swept sharply across every shadow in the surrounding dark. She was exhausted. She never asked to stop.
"When you ran missions in the Onmitsukidō, was the pace always like this?"
"Shorter."
Soi Fon swallowed the last of her rations. "Missions in Soul Society never run more than half a day from start to finish. The Reishi density here nearly doubles the error rate on Reiatsu perception. Every step needs recalibrating — just adapting to this environment took several days." A beat. "I've mostly figured it out by now."
"You've been scouting ahead this whole time. Thank you."
Soi Fon turned her head away and pushed the canteen back onto her belt.
"...I don't need your praise. I'm the Captain of Squad 2 and Commander-in-Chief of the Onmitsukidō. This is my job."
She stood, knocked the quartz sand off her clothes, and held out a hand. "Break's over. Can you keep moving?"
Seijūrō took her hand and got to his feet.
"Yes."
---
At the same time. Seireitei.
Emiri Tsunayashiro sat in the Vice Kidō Commander's office, writing brush in hand, a half-reviewed barrier patrol report spread open in front of him.
The desk was buried under several times the usual volume of documents, barrier maintenance logs, Senkaimon dispatch applications, seal reinforcement plans, all stacked together. Every one of them needed a signature. Every one of them needed a stamp.
He set the brush on the inkstone and opened his fan to cover the lower half of his face, leaving only those handsome peach-blossom eyes visible. He'd complained a while back about the place being too quiet. Well. Now the paperwork was piled so high he couldn't even see the pine tree outside the window.
"This is such a pain," Emiri muttered to the empty office. "The Kidō Corps doesn't consist of just me. The Vice Kidō Commander reviews documents, but there are seated officers below, why does everything land on my desk? Yes, I know I'm covering for him. And this is peacetime. If something actually happens later, the Gotei 13 can move people around, but the Kidō Corps paperwork won't shrink on its own."
He resigned himself to it, picked up the brush, signed the report, and pulled out the next Senkaimon dispatch application. He was halfway through writing when an attendant knocked at the door.
"Vice Kidō Commander, Captain Sōsuke Aizen of Squad 5 requests an audience."
The tip of Emiri's brush stopped on the paper for just a moment.
Sōsuke Aizen. The honest one who always sat in the corner at Captains' Meetings and never said a word.
He had no personal connection with the man, only a handful of encounters at Captains' Meetings, enough to form an impression of "gentle, honest, not very good at refusing people." Emiri quickly gathered the papers spread across the desk, slid the half-signed application under the inkstone to weigh it down, and called out, "Please come in."
Sōsuke Aizen pushed the door open and stepped in. Stride steady as always. Smile warm as always. His short brown hair looked a shade darker than usual under the dim light, and behind the black-framed glasses his eyes held exactly the right amount of warmth, the whole of him harmless and amiable. He gave Emiri a slight nod, settled himself into a guest chair without hurrying, and even reached over to smooth down a document that had slid crookedly off the corner of the desk.
"Still reviewing documents this late, Vice Kidō Commander. You've truly been working hard. When I used to teach calligraphy at Shin'ō Academy, I had dozens of assignments to grade after school every day. The students' writing was crooked and messy, more draining to correct than squad paperwork, though that kind of drain had its own particular feeling to it. I imagine the Kidō Corps' documents must be even more tedious."
"Tell me about it. Crooked student writing gives the teacher a headache; endless documents give the Vice Kidō Commander one too. Still, this is the easy part, peacetime just means extra paperwork. If a real upheaval came, the paperwork wouldn't decrease on its own, and then being short-handed would be the real problem."
Emiri tapped his fan lightly against the desk, his tone settling back into its usual lazy ease. "Does Captain Aizen have something pressing that brings you here today?"
"Nothing particularly urgent. I just returned from the World of the Living, and I heard that Teacher — the Grand Kidō Commander — volunteered to go to Hueco Mundo for an investigation. Captain Ukitake mentioned it at the Captains' Meeting. I was still handling an assignment in the World of the Living at the time, and only heard about it when I got back."
Aizen's tone was light and offhand, the way someone might ask after a senior they hadn't seen in a while. "Did Teacher go to Hueco Mundo alone?"
"No, Captain Soi Fon went with him. She was concerned he might not be able to manage on his own and insisted on accompanying him, so they went together. At least they can look out for each other."
"Teacher always thinks things through carefully. Hueco Mundo is nothing like Soul Society, with Captain Soi Fon there, the mission should go more smoothly."
Aizen paused. Then he looked up at Emiri. "That said, Hueco Mundo does carry unpredictable variables. I've run into a few unsettling situations myself, both in the World of the Living and around the outer perimeter of Hueco Mundo. If Teacher runs into any difficulties, or if there's any need for logistical support, the Kidō Corps must notify me promptly. I can cooperate at any time."
Emiri gave the fan in his hand a slow spin. "Captain Aizen is very considerate. Before departing, Teacher made arrangements for everything he could anticipate in advance, and the Kidō Corps' barrier shifts and Senkaimon scheduling are stable for now. If there is a genuine need, I will notify you immediately."
Aizen set his teacup at the corner of the desk, stood, and nodded to Emiri.
"Then I won't keep the Vice Kidō Commander from his documents. While Teacher is away, the Kidō Corps will be in your hands."
"Captain Aizen is too kind. It's simply my duty."
Emiri rose to return the courtesy, fan still covering the lower half of his face as he watched Aizen walk out the door. Only after the sound of footsteps in the corridor had completely faded did he slowly close the fan and settle back into his chair. He flipped the barrier patrol report back over, he'd turned it face-down while Aizen was here, and stared for a moment at the stamp mark at the bottom of the page that had yet to be pressed. Then he set the brush back down beside the inkstone.
Emiri Tsunayashiro suspected no one. Trusted no one.
In all his years with the Tsunayashiro family, he had seen too many people, some hiding daggers behind smiling faces, some burying genuine kindness beneath cold indifference. He didn't care who was good and who wasn't. He only knew that protecting the Kidō Corps' stability, and keeping this post running, was the only thing he wanted to do.
As for Captain Aizen, while the Grand Kidō Commander was away, it was the same no matter who came asking. Routine reception. Airtight.
He opened the stamp box, verified each document against its requirements one more time, and stamped, blew dry, and filed them away.
---
Shūhei Hisagi walked down the stone-paved avenue toward the archives room, a stack of patrol reports he'd just sorted from the Squad 9 barracks tucked in his arms. The "69" tattoo on his left cheek caught the faint glow of the roadside lanterns as he moved.
Aizen was coming from the other direction. He stopped to greet Hisagi, tone as warm as always, and asked a few easy questions about how things had been going in the squad. Hisagi mentioned that patrol reports had piled up lately, so he was using tonight to file them all at once. Aizen nodded.
"By the way, I'd like to trouble you to pass something along to Captain Tōsen."
The same easy, conversational tone, like he was mentioning an ordinary piece of squad business.
"The frequency of Seireitei's barrier adjustments has been considerably higher than usual lately, and the Grand Kidō Commander has gone to Hueco Mundo for an investigation. From the reports I've heard at the Captains' Meetings these past few days, Reishi density fluctuations around the outer perimeter of Hueco Mundo may be affecting the stability of the Garganta. If the investigation gets slowed down by the environment out there, his return could run later than planned."
He paused. "Squad 5 isn't responsible for Hueco Mundo affairs, and it wouldn't be appropriate for me to inquire directly. But if it's convenient on Captain Tōsen's end, you might ask him to keep an eye on the Reishi monitoring data, if the irregular fluctuations don't settle down, it would be worth making some advance preparations according to the contingency plan we discussed, so the Grand Kidō Commander doesn't come back to unnecessary complications. Nothing urgent, I just happened to run into you on the way, so I thought I'd ask you to pass it along."
Hisagi turned the words over in his head, then nodded. "Keep an eye on the Reishi monitoring data, prepare according to the contingency plan. Got it. I'll relay it to the Captain exactly as you said."
Aizen smiled, offered a word of thanks, stepped past him, and continued down the stone-paved avenue toward the Squad 5 barracks.
Shūhei Hisagi watched Aizen's figure disappear at the far end of the avenue, then turned and kept walking toward the archives room.
Reishi fluctuations on the outer perimeter of Hueco Mundo could indeed interfere with Garganta stability, and Captain Tōsen had been reviewing Reishi monitoring data recently anyway. As for what those "contingency plans" actually involved, Hisagi didn't know. That was Captains' business. His job was just to deliver the message. He shifted the stack of patrol reports to a better angle in his arms and kept walking.

Chapter 52 - Ulquiorra Cifer — Words Unspoken
Seijūrō and Soi Fon rested briefly at the edge of the quartz deadwood forest, then pushed deeper into the inner circle.
They crossed several dried quartz riverbeds and rock faces wind-eroded into honeycombs. A handful of patrolling Hollows crossed their path along the way, each one dispatched the instant Soi Fon spotted it, a flicker of Shunpo, one clean stroke, done before the creature could even howl. Seijūrō crouched beside each set of remains and ran his portable device over the Reishi circuits. The modification traces were getting harder to ignore. Several of the circuit nodes showed intricate branching structures that had no business appearing in an ordinary Hollow, as though someone had taken a scalpel to the evolutionary process and forced open an entirely different fork in the road.
"These Hollows show far more precise modifications than the ones in the outer circle. The ones outside only had their Reiatsu ceilings adjusted. These have had their entire internal Reishi circulation restructured."
He turned the screen toward Soi Fon. "Look at this branch. From this point on, a normal Hollow's Reishi circuit should develop toward a Gillian. But this one's circuit was forcibly diverted here, pointing somewhere else entirely. Like someone wanted it following a completely different evolutionary path—then gave up halfway through."
"So these are test subjects closer to success," Soi Fon said.
Then she raised a hand.
Her brow furrowed. Her pale gray eyes fixed on a depression ringed by quartz pillars not far ahead. Her fingertips traced lightly over the wind-chilled stone as she lowered her voice: "There's a very strange Reiatsu up ahead. Not a living Hollow, but it hasn't fully dissipated either. It's like something stuck in between." Seijūrō aimed the device in the direction she indicated and swept a scan. His expression changed. The waveform on the screen didn't match the standard band of any living Hollow, but it hadn't zeroed out either. Like a residual Reishi signal pinned in place, neither dispersing nor moving.
"Let's take a look."
The entrance to the depression was blocked by two leaning quartz pillars crossed against each other. Soi Fon slipped through first, edging sideways with her Zanpakutō held level, ready for anything. The moment she cleared the pillars, she stopped.
Seijūrō came up behind her and looked over her shoulder.
This was another abandoned laboratory.
Several rows of rusted Reishi extraction devices lay overturned across the gravel floor. The workbenches were covered in scorched blast marks, the same equipment model, the same high-heat Hadō damage, the same as every base they had found along the inner circle's edge.
But that wasn't what stole the breath from their lungs.
It was the corpses.
Across a flat stretch of quartz sand at the center of the depression lay several dozen Hollow bodies, scattered without order. The poses were all different, some curled on their sides, some face-up, some sprawled across the gravel with arms stretched forward. The angles of their joints looked nothing like the result of an external blow. It looked more like each of them had simply lost all strength in a single instant, folding into whatever position they happened to be in, and never getting up again.
No fatal wounds. No slash marks. No scorched burns from Hadō. No signs of any struggle at all. They had just died there, in silence.
But these Hollows were unlike anything Seijūrō had ever seen. Their forms were too close to human, the proportions of their limbs, the contours of their torsos, the ratio of shoulder width to height. They looked like discards. Like someone had spent years forcing a human and a Hollow together, tearing the result apart, and stitching it back together, each attempt failing, until eventually these things were simply left here.
Several had heads that had clearly taken shape. Brow ridges, nasal bridges, jawlines you could make out. But the masks only covered half their faces, leaving the twisted, indistinct muscle tissue beneath exposed.
Several others no longer had claws at the ends of their arms. They had fingers, five on each hand, clearly defined. Except every finger was far too long and thin, the joint counts wrong, as though they had been stretched out and carelessly bent.
But the one thing that sent a chill straight down his spine was the eye.
One Hollow lay on its side next to an overturned Reishi extraction unit. Its mask had shattered down to a few fragments clinging to the cheekbone. The left eye socket was empty. In the right sat an intact eyeball, iris light brown, pupil reduced to a dead, motionless pinprick under the eternal cold moon of Hueco Mundo.
That eyeball did not look like a Hollow's eye.
He had seen countless Hollow masks. Every last one of them bore hollow, bestial, unfocused darkness.
But in this eyeball, something almost human remained. A gaze that lingered even in death.
Soi Fon moved silently from corpse to corpse, crouching to examine each one's time of death and physical characteristics, her frown deepening with every body she checked.
"This one died later than the others. Her upper body is almost entirely that of a human woman—the collarbones, the hollows of her shoulders, the curve of her ribcage, even down to having only five fingers, the nails shaped exactly like an ordinary woman's. But her lower body is still Hollow joint structure: knees bent backward, hooves below the ankles. Her mouth is wide open, the jaw nearly dislocated. Like she was trying to do something she couldn't complete right before she died—maybe speak, maybe breathe, maybe just scream. Whatever it was, she never finished it."
Seijūrō forced his gaze away from that eyeball. He crouched down and aimed the device at the Reishi circuit remnants of one of the corpses.
The screen flooded with data. Every corpse's circuits bore clear signs of artificial tampering, the degree of modification far beyond anything they had encountered out in the desert. But another set of numbers caught his attention more: threaded through the Reishi structures of these bodies were components that did not belong to Hollows. The waveform for those components was fainter and buried deeper than the modification traces.
"Foreign Reishi components were deliberately introduced into their circuits. Components only a Shinigami could provide, Reiatsu, Kidō residue, or directly extracted Reishi. Some of them survived being fed that Reishi and walked out of these ruins alive. That's where the modified Gillians in the outer circle came from. But these ones had rejection reactions too severe to survive. Their bodies couldn't handle the density of Shinigami Reishi. The internal circuits collapsed. They simply stopped."
He stood up. He turned the device toward the field of scattered bodies, and something rare entered his voice, genuine exhilaration.
"But Shinigami Reishi can be detected. That means we can take this set of Reishi fluctuation signatures back to the Technological Development Bureau, reverse-extract the Shinigami Reiatsu fragments inside, and cross-reference them one by one, exactly like matching a criminal's DNA. If any Shinigami's Reiatsu aligns with what we pull from these ruins, that person is one of the sources behind these modified Hollows."
Soi Fon rose. She said nothing.
Seijūrō was still looking down, sorting through the data on the screen, when a hand closed silently around his wrist. The grip was light. It was absolutely firm.
He looked up.
Soi Fon wasn't looking at him.
Her face was tilted slightly upward, gaze angled toward the ceiling behind him, toward the deep shadow thrown down by the quartz pillars. Her right hand was already on the hilt of her Zanpakutō.
Her voice came out barely above a breath, pressed straight from the back of her throat, carrying the particular restraint that only appeared at the edge of extreme vigilance. "There's something up there. Not a corpse. It's alive."
Seijūrō shifted his eyes slowly.
On the device's screen, an unfamiliar Reiatsu waveform was climbing. Very, very slowly.
The shadows across the ruin's dome were thick. Moonlight reached the middle of the cavern and no further; the area near the ceiling was almost complete darkness.
He saw nothing at first.
Then the silhouette emerged.
That was the greatest difference between this Hollow and everything else born in the depths of these caverns. Other Hollows came out of the dark, betrayed to the moonlight by pale bone masks and gray-white bodies. Not him.
He was pure white. White as bone. White to the point of not resembling anything living, like a pale branch broken from a white thicket, somehow more conspicuous in this ruin's shadow than anything should have been.
He hung inverted from the rock wall. A pair of massive black wings wrapped half around his body, the membrane edges drooping along the curve of the cavern ceiling like a shroud pinned against the void.
His face bore no savage fury. No hunger-twisted distortion. Just a bone-white mask, both eyes exposed, watching them in quiet stillness. Those dark green pupils were like two fissures chiseled through the eternal night of Hueco Mundo itself, and they had been open since the very first moment Seijūrō and Soi Fon stepped into this ruin. Watching. The whole time.
Every word they had spoken beside those corpses. Every action they had taken. He had seen all of it with perfect clarity, including how Seijūrō carefully sealed the Shinigami Reishi samples into bags beside those dead failures, and how Soi Fon crouched before each body to check pulses and record wounds.
Countermeasures cascaded through Seijūrō's mind in the span of a few breaths.
Hadō #88, Hiryūgekizokushintenraihō, enough power, but firing it inside this cramped ruin meant the collapsing debris would bury both of them and every piece of evidence on the ground.
Hadō #33, Sōkatsui, controllable blast radius, but bat-winged Hollows were acutely sensitive to changes in air pressure. The flames might not even detonate before the target flashed behind him.
Bakudō #61, Rikujōkōrō, could lock down movement, but if this Hollow's ability was spatial transfer or high-speed flight, the light-plates would never catch it.
Take the fight outside?
Open quartz sand, no cover, he and Soi Fon could use their Shunpo freely, and Kidō range would come into its own. But outside was also where the Gillian patrol routes converged. One battle's worth of Reiatsu leaking out would draw not just a few scouts, but every combat-modified Gillian along the entire perimeter of the Menos Forest descending on them at once.
Confined space: Bakudō for control, Soi Fon closes in for the kill.
Open ground: long-range bombardment, Soi Fon harries the flanks.
Did this Hollow have a special ability?
"So after all that—you aren't with the group from before."
The words hit him like an ice blade dragged across his back.
The group from before.
This Hollow hadn't just seen the masterminds. It was comparing him to them.
It had seen them run experiments here. Seen them feed Shinigami Reishi into Hollows. Seen them throw these failed half-human bodies into this place to die.
Everything this creature had witnessed was the complete truth he had spent decades chasing.
He could barely keep the urgency out of his voice. "My name is Seijūrō. What do I call you? You've seen the group from before, can you tell me what they looked like? Their names? What they said? Even if you only remember their Reiatsu, that works. Anything at all. I just want to know who they are."
Soi Fon's arm cut across in front of him, solid as a blade.
"What are you saying, it's a Hollow. Look at that Reiatsu. Adjuchas-class at minimum. Extremely dangerous. It will swallow you whole." Seijūrō looked at the tight line of her profile.
He didn't move.
Then that voice came again:
"Ulquiorra."
"What?"
"Ulquiorra Cifer. That is my name."
