TKSSS:STA — Chapter 23 - 24: Framed — Face to Face

Pale morning light seeped through the gap of the laboratory's iron door, falling onto the flagstone floor in a narrow strip.

Kisuke Urahara rubbed his aching eyes and stood up from the lab bench. A few tufts of his short pale-yellow hair stuck up where they'd been pressed flat, and his army-green eyes were shot through with red. He'd worked straight through the night, ever since Iwakizhi Tetsusai used forbidden Kidō to move Shinji and the others, he'd spent every hour analyzing the reishi structure of those white masks. The hollowfication was moving faster than he'd anticipated. Kensei was already completely covered. Hiyori's mask was spreading toward her forehead. Shinji's had stopped at his eyes, those gold irises still watching him from behind the white. He had time. Not much, but some.

He walked to the iron door and pushed it open. Morning light poured in, carrying pine resin and damp soil, the clean sharp air that only existed at this hour. He drew a slow breath, let the cold fill his lungs, felt his chest expand.

Then he stopped breathing.

A line of Onmitsukidō members stood outside the entrance. Black shinobi gear, cloth masks covering everything but their eyes. The one at the front stepped forward and set his scabbard against the stone with a dull, deliberate knock.

"Kisuke Urahara. Central 46 has issued a mandatory arrest warrant. You and Iwakizhi Tetsusai are charged as the masterminds behind the soul disappearances in Rukongai and the Shinigami hollowfication incident. Come with us."

The courtroom of Central 46 sat deep beneath Seireitei's Central High Ground. A circular hall. Forty-six seats arranged in tiered rows, each filled by a figure in dark robes, faces swallowed by the shadow of their hoods, only pairs of old, sharp eyes catching the light. Forty sages, six judges. The highest judicial authority in Soul Society.

Kisuke Urahara stood at the center of the hall, wrists bound behind him by Kidō shackles. Iwakizhi Tetsusai stood beside him, a big man, and he held himself like a wall, back straight under forty-six pairs of eyes, the gaze behind his reflective lenses fixed forward without a flicker.

The judge in the central seat spoke. His voice was old and flat and carried nothing in it at all.

"Kisuke Urahara. Where were you last night at midnight?"

Urahara lifted his head, army-green eyes steady on the judge. "The outskirts of Rukongai. Squad 9's temporary camp. I met Captain Hirako, Captain Kensei, and the others there."

"What were you doing?"

"Treating the wounded. Captain Kensei and Captain Hirako had been attacked, they were subjected to hollowfication, and I—"

"Hollowfication." The judge cut him off, and something cold entered his voice. "You admit to knowing about the hollowfication experiments."

"I know about them because what happened wasn't an experiment. It was an attack. The attacker was Sōsuke Aizen, Lieutenant of Squad 5. He subjected Captain Hirako and the others to, "

"The Lieutenant of Squad 5 was inside Seireitei throughout the entire night. 124 squad members and one captain can confirm this. He never left."

Urahara's fingers tightened inside the shackles. "That wasn't him. The real Sōsuke Aizen—"

"Enough." The judge's voice came down over his. "Your allegations have no evidence behind them. Your crimes do."

He raised a hand and gestured toward the side entrance.

A figure in Onmitsukidō gear stepped out of the shadows, dropped to one knee, head lowered. "The findings are as follows: in the underground laboratory beneath Squad 12's barracks, extensive evidence of hollowfication experiments was recovered. This includes reishi samples from Hollows, fusion data combining Shinigami Reiatsu with Hollow Reiatsu, and the remains of multiple Hollows used as test subjects."

Urahara's pupils shrank.

The judge in the central seat lowered his gaze through the shadow of his hood and let it rest on Urahara. His voice was measured and cold. Each word landed like iron on stone.

"Iwakizhi Tetsusai. For violating Soul Society's forbidden Kidō statutes through the use of Time Stop and Space Transfer: imprisonment in the Third Underground Prison."

His gaze moved to Urahara without pausing. "Kisuke Urahara. For harming your fellow Shinigami and conducting forbidden hollowfication experiments: your spiritual power is to be stripped, and you are permanently exiled to the World of the Living. Furthermore, "

He paused. His eyes swept the other seats.

"Four captains, three lieutenants, and one Vice Kidō Commander — eight individuals in total — have breached the boundary between Shinigami and Hollow during the hollowfication incident. Under Soul Society law, these eight are no longer to be regarded as Shinigami. They are to be treated as Hollows. Accordingly."

Urahara's head snapped up. "They are victims. Their hollowfication was done to them by Aizen, it was not their choice. They are still Shinigami. Their consciousness is still there, "

"They are no longer Shinigami." Not a tremor in the judge's voice. "A Hollow is a Hollow. The judgment of Central 46 is not open to question."

Urahara's lips parted, words forming,

The courtroom doors exploded open.

Not pushed. Blown apart. The heavy wooden doors burst outward in both directions, splinters wheeling through the morning light. A black figure tore in from outside at a speed that left a smear on the air, a ghost of motion burned into empty space. Black shinobi gear, mask wrapped over the entire head, only the eyes showing. Those eyes swept the courtroom in an instant, across the stunned sages and judges, across Iwakizhi Tetsusai, and landed on Urahara. The figure stopped in front of him. One hand caught his collar. The other caught Tetsusai's arm.

"Stop her! Intercept her now!" The judge's voice rang off the walls.

No one stopped her. Onmitsukidō guards converged from every direction, but she was already through them, a black wind with Urahara and Tetsusai in tow, and gone through the doors before the echo of the shout had died.

The judge's voice rang in an empty hall for a long time after.

---

Deep in the forested mountains beyond Rukongai, a hidden cave burned with faint blue light.

The barrier Iwakizhi Tetsusai had erected sealed the cave completely from the outside world. Reiatsu couldn't leak. Sound couldn't carry. Even light was absorbed at the perimeter. On a stone platform at the cave's far end, eight people lay side by side.

Shinji Hirako. Kensei Muguruma. Love Aikawa. Rōjūrō Ōtoribashi. Hiyori Sarugaki. Mashiro Kuna. Lisa. Hachigen Ushōda.

Eight white masks, slowly taking form, gleamed faintly in the blue light. Urahara stood before the platform and moved his eyes across every face. The masks were still spreading, but slower than before. Tetsusai's Time Stop had been cut short by the trial, but it had bought them the hours that mattered most.

Yoruichi Shihōin stood behind him. She'd shed the shinobi gear. What she wore now was black and spare, a sleeveless top cut open deep on both sides, baring the skin along her ribs. Her short purple hair held a soft gleam in the blue light. Her gold eyes tracked the figures on the platform, watching the hollowfication work its way across them.

"Seireitei will send pursuit squads. They'll find this place eventually. We can't stay in Soul Society."

Urahara looked at Shinji on the platform. The white mask had stopped at his eyes, and those gold pupils were still watching him from behind it. Shinji was still conscious. He knew it.

"Yoruichi." His voice was quiet. "I need to continue my research on the Hōgyoku."

She looked at him.

"The Hōgyoku was designed to dissolve the boundary between Shinigami and Hollow. When I built it, I didn't know what it would look like once that boundary was gone." His gaze settled on the mask on Shinji's face, on the white substance creeping outward from its edges. "Now I know. This isn't a boundary dissolving. It's a boundary being consumed. Hollow power is rewriting Shinigami power from the inside. If the Hōgyoku can dissolve a boundary, it can rebuild one. If it can consume, it can separate."

He paused.

"But I can't continue the research in Soul Society. Central 46 won't give me the time. Neither will Aizen."

Yoruichi leaned against the cave wall, arms crossed, gold eyes on him. "Where do you want to go?"

"The World of the Living. With Shinji and the others."

She was quiet for a moment. "That's 8 of them, plus you and Tetsusai. The World of the Living doesn't have Soul Society's reishi density. Your Reiatsu will keep deteriorating."

"I know." He turned to face her, army-green eyes steady. "That's why I need Gigai. Reiatsu-suppression type, completely seals the user's Reiatsu while slowly restoring spiritual power from within. Making 8 of them will take 20 hours."

"I have the time," Tetsusai said.

"I'll go gather more intelligence."

"...Thank you," Urahara said.

Yoruichi turned and walked out of the cave.

Outside, her figure moved through the pine forest. Morning light fell through gaps in the canopy, catching on her short purple hair, on the brown of her shoulders. She didn't look back. She only raised one hand, wrist turning to show a strip of tawny forearm, and pulled her mask back into place.

On the flagstone roads of Seireitei, Onmitsukidō pursuit squads were forming up. Central 46's arrest orders had reached every division. Kisuke Urahara. Iwakizhi Tetsusai. Four captains, three lieutenants, one Vice Kidō Commander. All to be treated as fugitives. No one yet knew that Yoruichi was involved. Not yet.

And in the faculty dormitories of Shin'ō Academy, Seijūrō had just woken up. Outside his window, white petals drifted through the courtyard as they always did.

He sat at the window and watched them fall, with no way of knowing that on this morning, Seireitei had changed forever.

Chapter 24 - Kidō Corps Lieutenant Seijūrō

Two years.

Seijūrō stood in the corridor of the Kidō Corps quarters, the Vice Kidō Commander's badge on his arm. Over his black Shihakushō he wore the Corps uniform, and in his hand was a barrier maintenance report he'd just finished reviewing. The pine trees in the courtyard were different from the ones at Shin'ō Academy, older, their crowns denser, pine needles accumulated into a thick layer on the ground that made a soft rustling sound underfoot. Every time he walked across those needles, he thought of the Onmitsukidō training grounds. Yoruichi dropping from a pine tree. Kisuke Urahara crouching on the gravel, drawing Shunpo diagrams in the dirt with a stick.

Two years already.

He closed his eyes. The memories came rushing back like a tide.

That morning, he'd gone to Shin'ō Academy the same as always. Walking the flagstone avenue, he noticed a crowd gathered at the bulletin board. He didn't stop, the notices there were almost always squad transfers, seat appointments, mission briefings. Years of teaching had made him numb to them. Then someone in the crowd murmured, low enough that it was almost to themselves: "This is probably the most Shinigami deaths we've seen in years." He stopped walking.

A casualty list was posted on the board. Squad 9 Captain Kensei Muguruma. Lieutenant Hiyori Sarugaki. Third Seat Heizō Kasagi. Fourth Seat Shinobu Okishima. Sixth Seat Izaemon Tōdō. All killed in action.

Heizō Kasagi. Shinobu Okishima.

He stood there staring at those two names for a long time. The ink wasn't even fully dry. Heizō Kasagi. Shinobu Okishima. Squad 9 Third Seat. Squad 9 Fourth Seat. Listed behind Kensei and Hiyori, the characters a size smaller than the captain's and lieutenant's, but every stroke was glaringly, piercingly clear. His fingers curled slowly inside his sleeves.

Then he saw more names. Squad 5 Captain Shinji Hirako. Squad 7 Captain Love Aikawa. Squad 3 Captain Rōjūrō Ōtoribashi. Kidō Corps Vice Commander Hachigen Ushōda. Squad 8 Lieutenant Lisa Yadōmaru. Squad 12 Lieutenant Hiyori Sarugaki.

Mastermind of the defectors: Kisuke Urahara. Accomplice: Iwakizhi Tetsusai.

Seijūrō stood before the bulletin board and read every name, top to bottom. Then read them again. Kisuke Urahara. That easygoing man who'd crouched in the gravel drawing Shunpo diagrams with a stick. The Third Seat who'd pulled off his mask and stuffed it in his pocket with a shrug, saying, It's not like you're an outsider. The guy who could take a kick to the back from Yoruichi and still grin and raise his hands in surrender. The mastermind of the Hollowfication experiments. He thought of every word Urahara had said teaching him Shunpo. He thought of those days when Yoruichi was away, the two of them sitting shoulder to shoulder under the pine trees, passing a bamboo canteen back and forth. He thought of the look that would surface beneath that casual smile sometimes, a gaze so sharp and serious that you couldn't ignore it.

He didn't believe it.

But if Urahara had been framed — then who?

He had no answer.

Yoruichi Shihōin's name was added to the traitor list a week later. Yoruichi Shihōin, former Captain of Squad 2, Commander-in-Chief of the Onmitsukidō. For assisting in the escape of Kisuke Urahara and Iwakizhi Tetsusai, and for participating in the Hollowfication experiments. Seijūrō stood before the bulletin board and looked at her name. Short purple hair. Gold eyes. Dark skin. Bare feet swinging gently from a pine branch. She'd shoved dango into his hand and said eat. She'd kicked him in the shin and said, Judgment isn't something you can teach.

He stood staring for a long time. Then he turned and walked back to the Academy. That afternoon he had a Kidō class. He stood at the podium, chalk in hand, drawing Reiatsu flow paths on the blackboard. When he got to the convergence circle, he stopped. Stared at nothing. A student called up from below: "Teacher, are you all right?" He said, "I'm fine." Chalk dust settled on his cuff. He didn't brush it off.

Another week later, Shigekuni Yamamoto Genryūsai summoned him.

Inside the Squad 1 Captain's office, the Captain-Commander sat in the chair he had occupied for over 2,000 years. His long white beard hung to his waist. His cane rested against the stone floor. His voice was slow and low and direct, with no room for pleasantries.

"The Kidō Corps is short on people. Iwakizhi Tetsusai defected, Hachigen Ushōda is dead. Both the Grand Kidō Chief and Vice Commander positions are vacant. Sōsuke Aizen recommended you for the post of Grand Kidō Chief. Your understanding of Kidō is exceptional within the Seireitei, and your Shunpo holds up in actual combat." He paused. The cane struck the stone floor once. "However, your seniority is too shallow. Start as Vice Commander first."

Seijūrō stood there and bowed slightly. "...Understood."

Sōsuke Aizen had recommended him. His student. Now Captain of Squad 5. After Shinji Hirako was branded a traitor, the Squad 5 captaincy went vacant, and Aizen stepped into it. From lieutenant to captain, from Hirako's shadow to Hirako's chair, it took only a matter of days.

When Seijūrō walked out of the office, the corridor was empty. He found himself thinking of Mayuri Kurotsuchi, that Squad 12 Third Seat with the black-and-white mask who spoke with undisguised contempt for everyone around him. He'd crossed paths with Kurotsuchi a handful of times, in the corridors of the Technological Development Bureau, outside the Squad 12 barracks. Kurotsuchi looked at people in a way no one else did. Not Aizen's quiet warmth. Not Gin's half-shut eyes. His gaze was direct and unadorned, the look of someone assessing an experimental specimen for its value. Seijūrō only learned later that Kurotsuchi had been locked in the Maggot's Nest, Squad 2's special detention facility, built for those deemed potential threats to the Seireitei despite having committed no crime. Not for what they'd done. For what they might do. Once a Shinigami entered the Seireitei, they couldn't stay outside of it all. Once they wanted to leave — or were considered likely to leave — they got locked away. Like Kurotsuchi had been. He understood that today's appointment from Yamamoto was not something he could refuse.

He was the Vice Kidō Commander now. From instructor at Shin'ō Academy to Vice Commander of the Kidō Corps. From a classroom podium to the Seireitei's barrier network. From teaching students Kidō theory to maintaining the spatial barriers of an entire world with his own hands.

That night, the noren at Nanamagari swayed in the breeze.

Seijūrō sat in his usual corner at the counter, back to the wall, facing the door. The stew on the stove had gone back to the original miso recipe. Heizō had been the only one with a palate heavy enough for the new flavor; once he was gone, the new miso had quietly disappeared with him. The old woman stood behind the stove chopping vegetables, the rhythm of blade on board as steady as it had always been. He held his teacup and looked at the dark brown grain of the counter.

The noren shifted.

Sōsuke Aizen walked in. The Squad 5 Captain's haori draped over his shoulders, short brown hair parted neatly to either side, eyes calm and gentle behind his black-framed glasses. The captain's badge on his arm. He crossed the room and sat down beside Seijūrō, moving exactly the way he always had, the same as in the Shin'ō Academy classrooms, the same as outside the faculty dormitory window, the same as every evening he'd come to see his teacher. The old woman glanced at him, said nothing, and went back to her chopping.

"Teacher." Aizen's voice was the same as ever. That even, perfectly measured tone.

Seijūrō looked down at his teacup. "Congratulations, Captain Aizen."

Aizen was quiet for a beat. "I still prefer it when Teacher calls me Sōsuke."

"You're Captain of Squad 5 now."

Aizen didn't answer. Seijūrō lifted his cup. The tea caught the light of the old paper lantern behind the counter, bright as a small mirror. Shinji Hirako was gone. Aizen was captain.

"I'm sorry about Captain Hirako," he said.

Aizen's fingers stilled on the counter for just a moment. "...As am I."

Seijūrō didn't look at him.

Aizen ordered a pot of tea. The old woman set a flask of sake in front of him instead. He paused, then poured a cup anyway, picked it up, and didn't drink. Moonlight seeped through the gap in the door and fell across the fingers holding the cup, across the black-trimmed white fabric of his haori.

"Teacher is Vice Kidō Commander now," Aizen said quietly. "The Kidō Corps opens pathways, maintains barriers, executes seals. Under normal circumstances, the Vice Commander has no reason to enter the field personally. It's safer than teaching at the Academy."

Seijūrō said nothing.

"Teacher has been getting stronger — Kidō, Shunpo, and now this. But has Teacher ever thought about where it ends? What is the point you're walking toward?"

"Protecting the people who need protecting."

"And if one day Teacher finds out he can't?"

Seijūrō's fingers tightened slightly around his cup.

"Kasagi and Okishima," Aizen said, his voice barely above a murmur. "Teacher knew them well, didn't he."

Seijūrō's knuckles went white.

"Teacher has taught more than just me. Aoki was your student; Kasagi and Okishima weren't. But what Teacher feels about their deaths is the same as what he felt about Aoki's." He paused. "In a classroom, Teacher could protect dozens of students. In the Kidō Corps, he can protect the entire Seireitei. There are more people behind those walls."

Seijūrō said nothing. Aizen set his payment on the counter and stood. The hem of his haori swung gently as he turned, like a banner with no wind to lift it. He walked to the entrance, lifted the noren, and stopped.

"Teacher."

Seijūrō looked at him.

Aizen turned. His right hand rested on the hilt of his Zanpakutō. The blade slid out of its scabbard, a green hilt, a hexagonal tsuba with a near-circular opening cut through the center. Moonlight came through the door crack and fell across the blade, catching a small gleam of cold light. "My Zanpakutō. Now that I think about it, Teacher has never seen its Shikai. We're colleagues now, more or less. I thought Teacher might want to know—"

Seijūrō was on his feet. He crossed to Aizen, reached out, and pressed his hand over Aizen's hand on the hilt. The blade stopped at the mouth of the scabbard and went no further.

"What exactly are you so pleased with yourself about?"

Aizen's fingers went still on the hilt.

"You make captain and suddenly you lose your head? Showing off your Zanpakutō's ability to anyone who'll look. Do you want to end up like Hirako? Do you want me to find your name on that casualty list one day?"

Aizen's eyelashes moved, just slightly. Then he guided the blade back into the scabbard, unhurried, even. He bowed toward Seijūrō, the posture identical to every bow he'd offered in the corridors of Shin'ō Academy years ago.

"I wasn't careful enough. Thank you for the reminder, Teacher."

He straightened, lifted the noren, and stepped outside. Steady pace. Straight back. The hem of his haori trailed in the night air. The noren fell closed behind him and shut out the moonlight.

Seijūrō stood where he was, watching it sway.

Outside Nanamagari, moonlight lay across the grey-blue flagstones of the alley.

Aizen moved through the alley at an even pace, his haori hem drifting in the breeze, the green hilt catching the light. He reached the corner and stopped. A figure stepped out of the shadows. Short silver-grey hair. Narrow eyes curved into two crescent slits. That smile no one could ever quite read. Gin Ichimaru leaned against the wall, his Kyoto drawl soft as silk.

"Is that wise? He didn't fall under Kyōka Suigetsu. That could cause problems for us."

Aizen didn't answer right away. Moonlight hit his glasses and threw a small glare across his eyes, hiding them.

"Never mind. He can't make any waves. We'll deal with it after he becomes Grand Kidō Chief."

He started walking again. Gin tilted his head, silver-grey hair catching the moonlight, and fell into step behind him.
