Will the final video be coming out tonight? I want to watch now but the extremely rapid cuts in the draft make me dizzy

Best $1 a month I spend.

I would have liked the episode to include a bit more about what usually happened to the prisoners after their sentence is up. The opening line about how city sims pretend it's a direct route to reform and "reducing crime" seems like it's somewhat dropped. Even if the episode later on emphasizes that ultimately money saving/making concerns became more or less a primary factor for prison policy, some more explicit connection to the initial comparison could have helped.

Including a transcript/ subtitles would be nice (I know that youtube auto generates subtitles but sometimes they're wrong so a proper transcript would be good) Like sometimes you mention something cool that I try to google but its hard to find cos i cant spell it

Terrific episode. Especially loved the discussion about Ledoux's outrageous utopian ideas, but the whole episode is great. Don't know if this is useful to you , but I've got some nitpicks (since you're soliciting feedback): * General audio level seems off: to my ears, the video is perceptibly quieter than your other ones. * The audio quality seems to take a dip at a few points (Sargon of Akkad gag @ 2'49", "prison" euphemisms @ 6'54", Michel Foucault intro @ 8'27", maybe more I didn't notice) * You say policing "barely" existed at the time (2'26"); what does "barely" mean? I would have liked maybe just a sentence explaining. * You mention the Magna Carta "happened" (5'10"). Not being native to the Anglophone sphere, I'd have liked maybe a sentence explaining what the Magna Carta is. * I've never heard of a 96 square foot studio apartment (24'57") * I'd have liked an example of other attempted heating methods that poisoned prisoners (26'30"). * A couple of times, you use white text on top of chunks of the video that are white, partially obscuring the text ("Lex Talionis" @3'50", "Penitentiary" @23'51"); maybe add a black outline or something?

Great episode, funny and informative! Really liked all of the info on / analysis of the architecture, hope to see more of it in your future work.

19:06 you stumbled a bit on the word "contemporary". beyond that, fantastic work with this episode!

I enjoyed the video, the pacing and content were spot on.

Personally, I would've liked it if the music during the cinematic was just a tad louder. I feel like that change would be a good complement to the cool camera shots. I think the quieter parts of the piece were harder to hear than they should've been and that the bombastic parts were just average in terms of volume. Other than that I was quite pleased with the video. Good work!

The only improvement I can think of would be to drop the "Build is short this time so I'm building the 3d model of Eastern State Penitentiary" earlier on in the video. Even though from your post I knew there would be modelling involved, it was a little bit of an abrupt difference to the normal. It also sounds so much like a throwaway line. I'd stick that much closer to the opening. And perhaps to start with the 3 blocks of streets you draw out in CS before the modelling begins, so it starts out as people are used to it being. This is the first release since I started supporting 2 months ago and that's still money well spent!

I get ‘video unavailable’ ? Do you go into the idea of the colony as prison? (that is penal deportation). Noting the comment above about Foucault, Jeremy Bentham’s original pamphlet was entitled ‘The Panopticon, or New South Wales’ (!)

The Law and Order sound effect gag hits me every single time, the timing on that bit's fantastic. The 3D modelling as opposed to the build was super fun to watch, and I'm enjoying it immensely. The Sargon of Akkad joke with the wrong pictures landed flawlessly. I absolutely lost it at "It's a penis" 16:57 and I hate it. This building looks like an overpriced candy store at a theme park. I would *love* a video on Augustus Pugin Happy for the PhilosophyTube shoutout, love when my fave creators love my other fave creators, but it was shocking to hear how much prison's gotten more brutal over time, and how much of it was based on the need for prison labour. "Narrated by Steve Buscemi" _What_ And I'm not lowering my Patreon subscription. I'm holding out for that dirt bike.

thank you sir for not going all in on the foucault train when u were talking abt prison history....loved the episode

That's not to say it's bad, per se, just that some of the time you use going over architectural styles could be used to provide more context and perhaps some socialist-oriented commentary instead?

z
zug · March 22, 2019

Hmm. I kind of feel like it ended abruptly. One of your strongest traits is that you do a really good job connecting the lives of ordinary citizens to the larger context, and this one seemed to be generally missing that; it felt more like the history of a specific prison than a larger social commentary. Examples of some things I'm left wondering about: how did sentencing fit into the larger social contract? Was this poor house kind of stuff, or used for more serious crimes? You mentioned stocks and hangings as how things were done in England, is this how things would have been handled in Franklin before the prison was built? What social functions did the prison replace - did this create a new justice system industry that didn't exist previously, or did it replace some earlier system? Did (or perhaps does) prison labor have any appreciable effect on the trades that prison labor was producing, like cobblers and tailors or whatever?

d
donoteat · March 22, 2019

hard to do because franklin's a historical series -- i'm probably gonna splice in a bit about how labor unions opposed prison labor and also some segment about "prison labor bad" but i dunno if i got the research chops to speak directly about how the prison precisely affected the legal system in the pre-civil war era. i talked about architecture because it's what i know, lol

At 24:00 you flash white text on the screen and it partially disappears in your modeling. Oulining the text in black would keep it clearly in the foreground

The two brothas thing was risky, maybe reconsider how your voice brings out a stereotypical pronunciation there. Deadpan might be just as funny?

So, wait, singing the praises of equality and then doing the opposite in your actual laws is as old as the Code of Hammurabi? History really is a flat circle, damn.

About to dig in. I can’t quite express how eager I’ve been for this episode. Fingers crossed for some juicy Eastern State Penitentiary history. Would you ever consider doing another Skylines series in the future on a very different city? Los Angeles comes to mind.
