I also really like orchestra version too.
one of my favorite parts of Hopes and Dreams is that those are literally the only actions you can take in the fight against Asriel: Hope and Dream. one heals you, the other reduces damage taken. that's all you have. just hopes and dreams that you can somehow break through to this sad, broken child hiding himself underneath limitless power and destruction. it's BEAUTIFUL. it's honestly hard to truly appreciate the music without having played the game, because there's just SO MANY themes and motifs that you hear across every region that all come crashing together at the end of each playthrough
I know you need to live your life, but I would legitimately watch you deep dive the entire undertale/deltarune soundtracks for like 10 hours 😂
It's always fun to see people react to undertale!
I would say for Hopes and Dreams would be best to do a study on post game, or even do a whole course of studies as you play through the game as you come across each leir motiff. See what each new addition is and come to a hypothesis on this song each time, then when you reach the finale where this song is played you can review each thesis you came to see how close you were about you analysis of this piece and the ost of this game as a whole.
Tim I know you might not have the time to do this but just doing a reaction to the full OST would be really fun, and helpful to your familiarity with the music too. It would fit into a stream (or two), for instance, and there's tons of nuances that you could notice. For instance, all of the tracks you listened to today are battle themes, and that's cool, but Undertale also has a lot of really beautiful tender musical moments, as well as a lot of silly moments too! Honestly Undertale just works best as a full package, it would be great to listen to the soundtrack with you.
omg i’m having flashbacks i used to love the undertale soundtrack
I feel a discussion on the older consoles sound capabilities and showcasing the music from era would make a great video. If you could, Marco Meatball would be the best guy to take you through all that. It is a testament to the coders back then for becoming composers and working with the extremely limiting tools they had. As example, the NES console (what most people associate with chiptunes nowadays) had a sound chip only capable of 5 audio channels at any one time. 2 square sound channels, 1 fixed triangle sound channel, 1 white noise channel and 1 DPCM channel. Seems alright but then you have to take account they had to leave some channels open for SFX caused by the player in the game. So it's mind blowing to think some of the songs from console are still revered today like the Mario theme or Wily's Castle 2. They still hold up man. It's crazy.
Another super fun reaction! Toby Fox is actually insane and ALL of the Undertale OST is a masterpiece. I don't know if it would be possible but maybe a fun stream idea would be going through maybe all 101 songs OR just the heavy hitters (for example listening to Heartache into Asgore or Ghost fight into Dummy!) to really see and feel the leitmotifs at play. Also love seeing how far Toby has come, For example seeing him collab with Houshou Marine and Camellia for Dead Ma'am's Chest to having dinner with Sakurai (Designer and Creator of Smash Bros. and Kirby) and other massive game devs!
Tim reacted to Dead Ma'ams Chest
Re: the off tuning on Asgore, Toby does like to use pitch shifting off from standard tuning for some songs. I'm not 100% sure of the source for this, but I found a guitar arrangenent for Asgore that was A=429 and it sounded good, so it's probably a little down than A440. Apparently the songs in the game files are in normal tuning, and they're tuned up/down using something in the game engine itself, but I can't verify that myself
This is beautiful 🥹
