Also, Here’s a really touching speech Ado said during her most recent “Yodaka” dome tour that she just finished a few days ago, I feel like I need to share it (translation taken from a reddit post): A little while ago I said something like, “this is for me, to face myself,” and… I thought maybe I could talk a bit more about that. To be completely honest… I didn’t know how I was supposed to stand here in the Dome today. I didn’t know… what kind of feelings I was supposed to have, standing here. Lately, I’ve kind of lost sight of things like, “Why did I start singing?” “Why did I ever think I wanted to sing?” I should have known those answers, but… they slipped away from me. I’ve… grown this much, I’ve grown this much as “Ado,” and I’ve been allowed to stand on a stage this huge, but as a person, I’m really not that different from all of you— if anything, I’m more of a failure than most people. You’re all so kind, so even just out of politeness you’d probably say, “That’s not true,” and I think some of you really do feel, “That’s not true,” but it’s not that I want to hear you say, “That’s not true.” Because honestly, I really, really am… a mess. I sigh more than most people. I end up crying a lot. I often find myself thinking, “Why… why did Ado have to become famous?” Why… why did Ado become famous, and end up so loved by so many people, and yet why, why, why has nothing about me changed at all? Why do I have to be me? I can’t accept anything about myself; why am I stuck being me? I sigh a lot, and I cried yesterday too. I cried two days before my birthday, and on the birthday before that, I cried a lot too. As the day drew closer, I kept thinking, “I’ve got to get it together.” That I shouldn’t be saying things like this, that none of this is good, that I have to fix all of it. But nothing about me really changes, and I end up thinking, “Why, why do I have to be me?” I hate this ugly version of myself, and I hate the version of myself that tries to cover it all up. More than anything, I hate the me who keeps, and keeps, and keeps saying things like this— it feels pathetic, it frustrates me, and I just keep thinking, “Why?” Up until now I’ve said things like, “I’m going to go out into the world,” or “I’m going to win a Grammy,” and I think I’ve told you, “Please expect great things from me.” Of course those are still my goals now, and I do want you to expect things from me, and I do want to keep growing. But there was also this part of me that was telling myself those things just to convince myself— to make peace with the way “Ado” kept getting bigger and the stages kept getting bigger. “Ado” was supposed to be mine alone, and I was supposed to be Ado. But as “Ado” drifted farther and farther away from my heart, I didn’t know how I was supposed to face her anymore. At the same time, I hated the me that regretted that, and yet I also don’t regret it— it’s contradictory, but… I kept thinking, “So which one is me, and where am I in all of this?” People who don’t know the real me like “me” somewhere I’ve never even seen, and on the flip side, somewhere I don’t know, I’m causing someone trouble. My words that I don’t even remember saying get passed around. But every “Ado” they see is beautiful, every “Ado” is shining, and I’m left thinking, “Why, why do I have to be me?” (Audience: We love you! Ado-chan!) I don’t want anyone fighting anyone else, and I just want everyone to be able to laugh together and have fun, and yet… I—I’ve never been able to say the right thing, I’ve always felt powerless. Showing this side of myself, both as a professional and as a human being, as someone who stands on stage— it feels so disrespectful. I’m sure there are lots of people who would say, “Then get off that stage and let someone else stand there.” But… I’ve come to feel that, in the end, I really am just me. There are parts of me I absolutely hate, and I have so many complexes. I want to grow more; I want to live more beautifully as Ado. But I keep turning away from the self I hate, I just keep crying in the closet forever, and nothing is ever going to change (Ado starts crying.) So from now on, I thought… maybe I should try living as me, just as I am. (Ado’s voice shaking with tears.) I’m not as flawless as you probably think, and I’m not nearly as cool a person as you might imagine. I’m not perfect, and I’ll never be perfect. But I want to be able to say again, properly, that that’s still me, and that that’s okay. Probably my family, and the staff around me, and everyone who supports me, and all of you here too— I really think that you’d all rather see me face my ugly side and stand here as someone who’s truly accepted herself, and sing as that version of me. That’s how I should be as Ado, and I honestly think that’s absolutely the better way. I don’t know if “you’ll understand” is the right way to put it, but I think there are people who feel that the me just as I am, instead of a me that’s all patched up and put together, should be the way it is—because that is me. And I’ve started to feel that I… I have to do that. So from here on, again, with my whole past and my whole future included, I’m going to move forward. So after “Yodaka,” not long after this—really, in the near future— I want you to know more about me. I want the public, the people around me, and everyone here tonight to know more about who I am. I’ve already decided. After “Yodaka” ends, I’m going to try talking about my life, and about the things I’ve never said until now, things I’ve hardly ever told anyone before. I want to… open those things up to you all. When “Yodaka” is over, not far from now—really soon— I think you, and the people around me, will get to know sides of me that have never been visible before. Or rather, that’s what I’ve decided to do! I’ve decided, yeah. (laughs) You’re probably thinking, “What on earth is she talking about?” Like, “Huh? What? What is this??” I really can’t tell you the details yet, but… Once I share that with you— once I tell all of you— I think I’ll finally be able, again, as Ado and as myself, to get ready to accept who I am, to love who I am— to start preparing for that kind of self-love. So from here on, I’m going to really face myself properly, talk a lot with the me I’ve been neglecting all this time, face her over and over and over, and move forward with her. So I want you to keep watching over that version of me from now on. You don’t have to accept me, but… I’d be happy if you’d at least keep watching. That’s what “Yodaka” is a starting point for. That’s what kind of start this is. I’ve said a lot of things, and I feel like I still haven’t really managed to say it all right… Like, “Ah, I really can’t talk well at all,” something like that. But the one thing I really want to tell you in the end is that today, being able to stand here, and to meet so, so many of you— from the very top, all the way to right in front of me and in the very back— to really face you and sing to you to be able to stand on stage as Ado… Today, truly, truly… I was happy. And when I’m standing on stage, just in those moments, even the ugliest parts of me, even the parts of myself I hate— (Ado’s voice breaking, crying) all of that… all of that just blows away, and I can become, fully, as myself and as Ado, the person I always wanted to be. So, so that’s why from here on too, I want to keep standing on stage, both as Ado and as myself. Thank you so much for showing me such an incredible view today, thank you so much for listening to my songs, and for listening to my story. Thank you, so much! Now then… I’ve ended up saying some strange, heavy things, but I believe that someday, this view we’re seeing right now and this “Yodaka” today will be something that, when we look back, we’ll be able to say, “That was special, wasn’t it?” “That was wonderful,” “Ado, that was wonderful.” I really believe we’ll be able to say that. The next song is the last one. From here on, as I keep creating the ‘me’ that I am, I’d be so happy if you would keep watching over me. All right! Things have gotten all serious and emotional— you’re all like, “Wow, this is heavy,” I can feel it. (laughs) I made it all somber, but for the very end, I’m going to sing my heart out. It really has gone by in a flash, but for this last, last, last song— Let’s burn this view into our memories together, and create the best possible ending, together!! Everyone!! Are you ready!!! Thank you. To the Vocaloid songs and utaite singers who have helped me so much until now, to everyone who believed in my singing and came here today, and to the me who’s crying in the closet— please listen. can anything about this be found online somewhere?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vap6i5gpJM4 - Here's a clip of Ado explaining her recording process. She records alone in an emptied out studio. She thought the vocal directors and producers were limiting her and not letting her develop her own vocal arrangements. Worth noting that *none* of the vocal stuff Ado does in this song is in the original, she treated these Vocaloid songs like a blank canvas. I can also give you recs to either other early Ado covers/features or some Maretu metal music. I'm a big fan of his guitar work.
She recently said that she comes up with a character for each song, whose voice the song is sung from, and thinks about what they should do. And she gets into the role.
Thanks for the reaction! One thing i notice about Ado after i listen to some of her radio and livestream clips is that she switches between bunch of different voices when she talks too (especially when she got excited/emotional lol) the channel that i sent you that translated her bd livestream has a lot of interesting clips of her talking. I think Ado said she started singing when she’s 12 and started posting covers online when she’s 14, and when you look the older comments of her older video you’d find some people’s like “I know you’re gonna be popular one day, so I’ll leave a comment to prove I was here” (they’re total right lmao) And for the interview, there’s some interviews she did with different youtuber, especially during her first world tour wish, but i have no clue how they choose them or how they arrange it tho, some of channels doesn’t seem that big either. But she does seem pretty busy now tho so idk when would they decide to do these more Some of the youtuber interviews i found that have eng sub: https://youtu.be/qWspyEJQFxw?si=WOnF9NBjn_xq9Efm https://youtu.be/UEGb4N1PEuM?si=suJW8r8x8PoyqFqK https://youtu.be/r8wlB9swGj4?si=Ajbu5SsYDaYzn-4b Some other ones (no english sub tho): From a taiwanese youtuber: https://youtu.be/MUpXnt1yRGg?si=Hfn0YKdDqG0gqFzK An older one with one of the biggest japanese youtuber: https://youtu.be/w-o73uuIREU?si=r9gyNBt57VvDXgwP
I understand she's apparently a very quick learner of vocal techniques; it's her talent. And she was born with a wide range. This has contributed to her performance of Vocaloid covers, which are quirky in structure. She reminds me a lot of Mike Patton. Only she's a girl.
I personally believe that the culture around karaoke, vocaloids and utaite etc. helped a lot of vocal talent to develope in Japan, Ado being like one of the most talented and unique vocalist out there as you see even in this vocaloid cover when she was super young. You would be amazed at how many insane Japanese vocalist you haven't heard yet, like Minami, Mafumafu, Wolpis Carter, Hanatan and Avu-chan (leadsinger of Queen bee) who have such unique voices with incredible range. You basically are touching the tip of the iceberg in JPOP with so many hidden talents out there in Japan. I would guess the most similar vocalist to ado rn is someone like 9lana who also experiments a lot with her voice in songs and also just does crazy vocal frys like in this vocaloid cover. www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPLkkdMFmco
I’m excited to check out all of these!
