POLL: Attack on Titan-Subtitles or Dubbed!?

Hey all, there seems to be some disagreement about how we should watch the show together. Please give me a vote and your opinion as to why we should do one over the other. I'll defer to the majority, I'm fine dubbed or with subtitles.

(*Also, if you have any other tips to make the watching experience best for us all, don't hesitate to leave ideas. Also, if me blabbing too much during watching it is annoying you let me know! I'm still pretty new at this. lol )

Dub will be missed 🥲 Erwin’s speech is so much better in dub but regardless I’m so glad your enjoying the show

Japanese dub is extraordinary. It's best to watch in the original, not even the best english dubbers can express emotions like an average japanese seiyuu (voice actor).

if you find it difficult to keep up with the subtitles, then switch over to dubbed

Whatever works for you, as long as you enjoy yourself. I personally love watching things in their original language and so I would go for subtitles

I chose Japanese because I find watching things in their original language you get the emotions that aligned most with the intent of the creators, and you also start to become familiar with sounds and expressions different from ones you are used to which I find interesting! All that said, I have no hate for dubs, and I get why reading subtitles is not for everyone. I support you doing what feels most fun! My only suggestion is to keep subtitles on regardless of what you do because it’s more accessible and helps you catch stuff you might miss otherwise.

The subs vs dubs debate has been going on as long as anime has existed and it makes me very sad to see people discount the skill of the English voice actors who do dubs. I am a big fan of several English-speaking voice actors who do dubs, and they take their work seriously. My partner and I watched Attack on Titan with dubs and it was great 🤷🏻‍♀️ We watch most things with dubs because... we can't understand Japanese. The voice acting of Japanese actors would be largely lost on us because we would have to process the meaning separately anyway. We watch everything with subtitles on regardless (I like to make sure I don't miss anything) and usually the English subs on anime are the same as what they would show on the Japanese voice acted version - you can tell because the wording is slightly off. Do what is most comfortable for you, the story is going to come through regardless. (edited for grammar)

I think for most people it's just a preference. While I've only listened to 4-5 episodes of AoT dubbed, I do find myself preferring the Japanese performance, even though I agree there are English VA's who take their work seriously and are great at their craft. The quality of the translations for the dub is often a real issue though.. Just in episode 1 of AoT for example in the dub Hannes says "He's just a kid. Tends to dream bigger than life really wants him to." when talking about Eren, when the correct translation was "Don't tell me... he wants to join the Scout Regiment?". Really not a fan of the translators interpreting what they think Hannes is trying to say in a different tone instead of translating what the writer intended...

i voted sub but i dont mind if you do dub as an anime new viewer. somethings can be lost in translation either way but as long as you continue the story i dont mind. I also dont mind if you talk during i saw during your last episode that you had questions on your face but didnt ask in the moment i hope that makes sense. when those moments arise just do a quick pause so you dont miss anything and we can here you thought process and theories even if you are wrong (AND NO ONE SHOULD CORRECT YOU) because the show is really good at answering all questions in time

I voted, but please use whatever is more convenient for you to have an enjoyable viewing experience without being distracted from the storyline ❤️

The original voice acting performances are a part of the work. And the vast majority of dubs are, at best, just good enough. Some of the really good ones are Cowboy Bebop (highly recommend it for the music), Hellsing Ultimate, Black Lagoon and Baccano!... All of which are 15-30 years old! I'd go so far as to say that the Cowboy Bebop and Hellsing Ultimate dubs may possibly be better than the originals, but this is a bygone era.

I voted but I don't really care which version is used. I just want to keep following the story.

I must admit, the English dub didn't help.

If you want the full emotional experience of the show then english subtitles with Japanese dialog is the way to go. The english dub just isn't anywhere near the same level of quality with how many things get lost in translation. No shade for those who enjoy the english dub but you can't argue the difference in quality voice acting.
