Ben E. Cabell
This week, after an Albania report, a segment we're calling "I'm NOT With (Mayor) Her," and a contractually obligated talking-about of a clout farming mayor, Riley gives us the second installation of his Dallas Trilogy (ed. note: See episode 87, "William Cabell." Excelsior!). Get in your strangely roofless car and buckle up! It's a bumpy one.
Also, preorder Mattie's band's new record why don't you!
---
thank you to actual, factual mayor Graham Birch for sending in the bumper.

Is Dallas in a dry cow-nty?
I sent a tumblr ask to Nova about Kaohly Her when the story broke, and I have been waiting with baited breath for it to be covered on the pod. You did miss that the chief filed this complaint pretty immediately after the city cut funding for the police department, and a city investigation found Her's behavior to basically be weird but not illegal. Also you were pronouncing her name wrong, it's KUH-lee.
I was also gonna say "I can't believe you didn't mention the weiner Wednesday text" but then I realized I didn't mention the weiner Wednesday text (in my defense, I forgor)
One additional wild-ass wrinkle to the Dallas-as-seaport story. In the 1880s Dallas had started drilling wells into the Woodbine Aquifer under the city. For a few years before indiscriminate drilling reduced flow it was an artesian aquifer; i.e. once you punched a hole in the top of the aquifer the water gushed out under its own power and kept gushing. People genuinely believed that there was just infinite water down there--the water came from the Rockies, or the Arctic, just a bunch of crazy theories. Part of the Trinity scheme was the idea that they were going to drill like 250 wells such that the resulting flow of water would significantly raise water levels in the ENTIRE TRINITY RIVER, aiding in the seaport plan. But for the one and only time in human history the overexploitation of a natural resource resulted in the depletion of that resource and the loss of its utility to the community exploiting it. By the mid 1890s flow had declined or ceased in most of the Woodbine aquifers.
Not related to the episode at all but Ken Sim got voted out in favour of a Green Party candidate in Vancouver btw :)))))
Graham Birch LET'S GOOOOOOOO
Fun fact about the push to make the Trinity River navigable up to Dallas: the sad boat was not the only time they tried!! Around the 1960s they made a push again and had the federal government declare the river navigable, and as a result there are several highway bridges over the river that are way taller than they need to be since they needed to fit federal guidelines to allow ships to pass underneath them.
As an aside, there is a far-inland city that unexpectedly has a port: Tulsa, Oklahoma! They've put enough dams and locks on the Arkansas River such that they can actually get barges there from the Mississippi.
I'm from the philly area and my coworker and husband are elks, and she tried to get me to join and gave me a membership packet and and everything. I already knew the elks did a lot of black face in the past which made me not want to join, but hearing about this guy makes me *really* not want to join.
So you're saying there's an obscure written record of Dallas history you're struggling to find? If only that city had some sort of building dedicated to mass storage of the written word
Interesting how the previous Cabell was involved in both ending reconstruction and establishing lost cause “heritage” meanwhile his son largely focused on commodifying and transforming Dallas “heritage” into something palatable for the north. Like if the first episode was how lost cause started and cemented itself this one is about how it proliferated
Regret to inform you that cattle semen is a hugely profitable industry in the US and has certainly made some families very wealthy
Girls...Kaohly Her is Hmong, which is an ethnic group originating from southern China who live primarily in East and Southeast Asia, with a large global diaspora. Her name is pronounced KUH-lee, not COW-lee
Hell yeah shout out to Texas Monthly! Daniel Vaughn is the barbecue editor!
Ben "Shoot-Your-Dice-Out" Cabell
"medieval times for the civil war" you mean the Dixie stampede?
Re: civil war jerseys, might I suggest googling Georgetown University's colors.
Axel Henry (the Car Person turned police chief) succeeded Todd Axtell who, from his name you can discern was his Police Father
Can I get the mayors layline?
Barbeque, like many American things, is a culturally black food that white people stole because they thought it was cool.
BOATS &COWBOYS &DESTINY &THE CONCEPT OF FATE, IN GENERAL Please, please! I *need* the shirt.
Maybe work in MAYORS or S̵̡̤͌̆̏̆̾̒̓̕͝P̵͍̐̋̈́̂͑Ȩ̶̢̮͓̦̼̻̟͐͒͒̅̈͂̎̒̈́́̈́̑͝͝E̴̱̖̰͔̱̠̝̼̮̯͈̩͚̖̊͒́̏͂͌̔͛̅̌D̵̡̨̮̻̟͚̰̯͆̏̈́̐̌̃̚͜͠Y̶̻̯̩̥͎̚ͅ there somewhere, IDK.
Unpleased to share that Dallas is still saying "Yeehaw to capital" as evidenced by the city's recent "Y'all Street" financial developments. Oak Cliff Mentioned YEEHAW
Did someone say social history of Civil War reenactors?? https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/82976/confederates-in-the-attic-by-tony-horwitz/
Mattie is correct, the United States has been presided over by three former mayors: Grover Cleveland, Christopher Columbus and Buffalo Bill.
When is the boxing match? Will there be Tshirts?
6:19 Is Nova using imprecise language here, because deepfakes are specifically facial replacement technology, requiring an actor to perform whatever you want to deepfake someone else doing. While obviously fully generated video requires nothing. Either of which is its own entertaining mental image.
18:15 shoutout to transformers prime where a guy who can turn into a car sexually harasses normal cars. Also Optimus Prime when he thought he was a normal truck
I’ve always had a soft spot for William Jennings Bryan. He’s kind of an American Quixote figure. He’s mostly remembered for opposing the teaching of evolution in schools but it is important to remember evolution in the 1920s was inextricable from eugenics, scientific racism and social Darwinism.
lmfao i had a vague idea that he was like a forefather of the classic american nationalist left-ish populists like bernie, i had no idea he was a teach creationism in schools guy that's incredible
Carnivalcinization - The phenomena where every municipality eventually becomes Venice.
excuse me but dallas has the dried up bed of the trinity river, thank you VERY much. it's where snotty rich kids used to go to get wildly intoxicated and engage in other morally questionable behavior
Mattie, I think you'll find that the first man to turn into a car was a young man named Brett Matthews back in 1984.
Worried this intro gimmick might start to get a little mayorisocial
I am taking the outro to mean the next guest will be either Damon Albarn or De La Soul
If you told me Damon Albarn had, unnoticed, been the mayor of a village along the Humber where the population is mostly aquatic. I would be entirely unsurprised.
I was waiting for the Saint-Denis mayor praises since seeing the video. Hell yes best guy.
If the mayor of Sandhurst says trans rights and a good 'viva mexico' with his whole chest, i will train that man and have him walk out like prime Canelo
In Australian parlance, to "root" is to "have sex with," so when the ladies got into the "hey buddy, can I interest you in some rootin?" bit, they nearly had me make a scene in the bus, lol. The listener that is finding all the ley lines that trace all the mayors is like Maes Hughes researching the history of Amestris, lol. Preventing a lynching so you can hang the guy "legally" is giving "stand back and stand by."
Jesus Nova just gave me like a ghostly shiver as she mentioned Threadless shirts, which I basically exclusively wore throughout high school. I still have the “Communist Party” one somewhere deep in my closet.
not me wistfully thinking of my black zip up "don't care bears" hoodie RIP hoodie
