Peter Stuyvesant
Goedemorgen! It's time to go Dutch Mode. This week, mayor Mattie rounds out our olde-timey second anniversary spectacular with Mayor Petrus himself, the final director-general of the New Amsteram colony. This guy was a real peg-legged piece of work. Here's Mattie flipping off his grave last week:
thank you to actual, factual mayor Dorothy McCabe, mayor of Waterloo, Ontario and listener Clover for the bumper!

Waterloo jumpscare
apparently my dad's family is descended from this guy, and tbh he does remind me of one of my uncles lol
I have done a bunch of primary source research using written 17th C dutch and it's not thaat bad. It just completely depends on who is writing because spelling is completely inconsistent. Some guys are easy to read, some much much harder.
Hiper de pipe
"wow this place is an absolute cornucopia of wild life better raze all of it to farm barley" like in shit continent we JUST left
I always imagined beavers as being kinda prickly or coarse
Oh my God, is that why in Super Mario Odyssey the New York style city is called New Donk City?????
Did not expect this episode to start with me, a southwestern Ontarian, *screaming in tri-city.* Excellent work getting the mayor from Waterloo, the city we all know is the superior municipality of that trifecta.
the NGNM "ohhh, that's why it's called that" Special
I can’t wait to find out when Stuyvesant meets Bedford
Ye Olde Blur: “Song 1”
As someone who once managed an actual Hudson's Bay Company fur trade fort, I have to ask if the five beaver pelts a month are carroted beaver or made beaver?
really excited to listen to this as a british person living Den Haag, putting me in the unique position of getting aurally flashbanged when someone horribly mangles a Dutch name (one that's normally familair to me cause there's often a street named after them here) while also being unable to critique the pronunciation (because mine is barely better) I live near-ish to Tienhovenselaan btw, lmao
Im an Anglo who lived in Middelburg for 3 years then den Haag (Zeeheldenkwartier) for 6. My Dutch is pretty good and I basically had to mentally compartmentalise away that fact the entire episode.
Oh my god the stimming Quakers bit is the hardest I’ve laughed in a while
Having project management during the Eighty Years’ War implies the existence of 16th Century Dutch Jira, IJra
This week on the Municipal Broadside, our intrepid crew sails to far Nippon to bring back a kimono which they then part.
As an Albanian, how have I never heard that it used to be called Beaverwych
New Donk City real???
of the Bedford-Stuyvesants? Bed-Stuy do or die? Radio Raheem? Radio Radio Radio!
Given that when this started new Amsterdam didn’t even have a dock a second flyte hijacked by the English hitting the twin piers and trade house dockyard would be a legit threat
They hid the old submerged Swedish star fort!
there are 15 competing Dutch languages. "we need to develop a standardized version of Dutch that covers everything!" there are now 16 competing Dutch languages
Nice burgundy polish, Mattie
But Maddie, Justinian was the Eastern Roman Emperor, not the Holy Roman Emperor.
"New York is a paradise" is just true
The first time I heard the name Peter Stuyvesant was when my mother told me about the time her high school was looking for a new mascot and fight song. She asked her father if his high school's fight song would work and he said no. She asked him why, and he sang it for her. Now, this man could not carry a tune for the life of him, so no one in the family knows what the song actually sounds like. But it went as follows: "old Peter Stuyvesant was the governor of New York" What this did for me is create a deep-seated involuntary reflex to respond to any mention of Peter Stuyvesant with the chant "old Hopkins High School was the governor of New York"
Listening to this ep while flying into LaGuardia for a wedding!
Holy shit Mattie Lubchansky said my name
MATTIE PERFECTLY DOMING ME IN THE HEAD WITH A " BORN SLIPPY " BY UNDERWORLD REFFERENCE IN THE LAST 10 MINUTES , BEAUTIFUL !
noooo the kieft 😭
you girls are getting virtuosic w this shit. the shrewd and positively neurodivergent excellence in writing and research, the volleying of clever bits and tasty historical nuggets, the forced transition of Riley, all that you’ve perfected across 200+ episodes is nothing short of genius. it’s like knicks game 4 second half 29 pt comeback level thrill (go knicks). buckets on buckets and then one of y’all just comes in clutch w the tip in for a artistic and beautiful finish on a crazy niche bit about 16th century low country Calvinism. each episode has me shrieking w delight. congrats on creating a perfect podcast. i strongly believe we as a species now don’t need anymore podcasts thanks. please never stop making it.
Not even one minute in and I'm already getting concussions from this Dutch [affectionate]
Re beaver butt: that's vanillin, no? There was a time when jt was cheaper to slaughter ecosystem engineers than ship in a Madagascan spice to make default ice cream flavour. Assuming refrigeration. Also raises the possibility of a colonialist naturalist proudly presenting his new "discovery" to an audience of burgers nonplussed by the beaver arse spice.
UGH I'm a rare books librarian for a new york historical society currently fighting for my life to not have my hours eroded out of existence, and you lot now have me convinced that the solution to all my woes is to become irrevocably useful by becoming fluent in 17th century Dutch hieroglyphics
No hieroglyphics but doing some research at work and came across an incredibly Stuyvesant ass escapade where Petrus heard that the guy I'm researching (James Grover) had a letter from Oliver Cromwell in his possession, and, terrified that the letter was an incitement to the English settlers to start attacking the Dutch, proceeded to chase Grover around Long Island until Grover finally escaped, leaving the letter behind. Stuyvesant then sent said letter back to Holland unopened, terrified that Cromwell would get mad at him for reading his mail.
From what I recall, the Dutch had originally held the spice islands, but the British managed to capture it. Then they figured out how to grow nutmeg/mace on other islands in the area then traded the island I question back for new Amsterdam.
white castle did nothing wrong
finnish…lincoln…
1:11:04 They absolutely mean Romani here, as "Turk" already covers all Muslims to them
We're going Dutch
Big Boss canonically Dutch.
Failing to mug the native americans reminds me of how at about the same time the VOC lost Taiwan to a bunch of pirates who wanted to bring back the Ming dynasty
Going from Beaverwych to Albany was a massive downgrade. So the thing about pronouncing Dutch as an American is you just need to do your Swedish Chef impression. My dad worked in Stuyvesant Plaza for a while. His boss was on the Phil Donohue show for having been divorced 11 times.
Oh no, this episode is about the birth of the wreched nation of America and all its peculiar horror. This is one of the really good ones. Great job, Mattie.
Ah kak, ze hebben ons gemerkt.
haha you can really tell that november has heard mia mulder's swedish accent enough to do it quite well
Very interesting hearing about Dutch colonialism in America as a South African, which has a sorta similar story. Same capitalist colonization, same Calvinism, similar baffling combination of openness to immigrants and native traders right alongside enslavement of immigrants and natives. Seems the main difference is New York never developed their own Afrikaners
Damn, I had the same thought.
Considering New York's horrible Dutch/British nature, I have often theorized that if the whole United States thing didn't work out, that this country would end up looking a lot like South Africa. Lots of settlers going out to claim land, getting into constant brutal fights with indigenous peoples, but without a centralized state to back them up, and the colonial powers really only being interested in extracting rather than managing their horrible colony. That's right, we'd have American Boers. Nightmarish stuff.
two paths: UNITED INDEPENDENT AMERICAN COLONIES and NORTH AMERICA RULED BY COLONIAL POWERS both lead to: NORTH AMERICAN APARTHEID The Illusion of Free Choice
I find it kind of impressive that New York had a ridiculously diverse lingual population literally since it's inception.
LIKE FROM THE CIGARETTES???
Ok, but why are the Dutch orange?
cos their royal family is the House of Orange i believe
"Hurt people hurt people" oh, what a perfect way to get to "genocided people genocide people." 🫢 ope...
Grend People grend people.
You can project a new episode if you wish really hard for it turns out
