Samuel Starling
We know that Nova says it's a bonus up top but it's not! We got it backwards. Sorry.
Anyway, this week, November starts our SECOND ANNIVERSARY OLDE TIMEY MAYOR TRILOGY with The City of London's Samuel Starling, a man who hates Quakers SO much. Do NOT doff your hat while listening.
Subscribe to this very Patreon to get double the mayors if you're not already!
------
thank you to actual, factual mayor Paavo ”GCM” Arhinmäki, the graffiti mayor of Helsinki, and intrepid listener Ilman Paineet

The poem that begins like a million anthologies of English verse, Sumer is icumen in, has a farting deer in it (probably, the actual line is "Bucke verteth" and some medievalists have disputed the fart reading but not all that convincingly). And... have you got any plans for William Walworth? (I recently watched The Uprising which bafflingly removes all the drama from the assassination of Wat Tyler)
Quaker listener. Don't worry about feeling extremely unmoored and disassociated by Quaker practice. That's normal. I do find it a little bit funny and also very sweet that someone who speaks in public with as much earnestnest and emotion as November would be uncomfortable to understand her speech as ministry. Thank you all for your efforts and ministry.
I really hope y'all expand on the notion of the "english dreamtime" and for that matter the "american dreamtime" in some future episode bc I feel like I have only the haziest grasp of what's being said. entirely separate from this I loved the digression on Samuel Pepys and want to just point out that his Wikipedia page is a very funny read with many beautiful digs at Pepys, of which some of my favorites are: - Pepys has been called the greatest diarist of all time due to his frankness in writing concerning his own weaknesses - His diary reveals his jealousies, insecurities, trivial concerns, and his fractious relationship with his wife. - Pepys increased his wealth substantially through corruption. these are NOT the only other bangers, I confess I've never dove especially deep down Wikipedian rabbitholes but this is one of the most hilariously contemptuous pages I've read on the site
GO BIRDS BABY listening from Philadelphia and it made me happy to have this all laid out with only learning it was our guy at the end.
I'm currently beefing with my gay t4t quaker situationship because they set up a worship sharing to get people involved in helping organize worship, including a front and back pamphlet on the topic of "have you ever thought about helping." I posted in the general chat asking if people wanted to meet 15 minutes beforehand to see who was interested in helping, and got yelled at on the phone for an hour for acting outside of the committee
To be clear, there is no committee
Never have I felt so moved by the mayortaculus. Moved where? Who knows; probably Pennsylvania
"Riding your friends down a mountain like a toboggan" this is an actual level in a Crash Bandicoot game
This does raise an interesting question. Was Public Universal Friend a mayor? Their group founded a town iirc.
The seatbelt sign noise freaked me out because I was on a plane at the time, but not the kind where you can take your seatbelt off lol 😵💫 (DHC-6 twin Otter for anyone wondering)
this might be the world’s most niche experience but i feel the need to share it: for my job i write a lot of bullet point lists in LaTeX presentations and now every single time i use the command \item i can hear not one but 3 co-mayors in my head
this is delightful and improves my workday immensely
I don't have discord and am very sleepy but please look out for Paul Young of Memphis. Stuff is blowing up right now regarding him and Elon's data center, and he keeps posting "no seriously I'm not a shill I promise" tweets
OK so like are trans people the Quakers of the modern day? You know with all the English state getting uppity and trying to stop us from being trans and us going "hey fuck off" and keeping on being trans?
All this Quaker talk got me thinking about the different ways religion can be organized, and now I'm wondering: Is Cult Leaders Mayors? Specifically John Humphrey Noyes, founder of The Oneida Community?
nasty, nastyhole, don't mean a thing
So, are you saying history doesn’t ride on horseback, it, in fact… wears a sash?
Learning all my favourite monologues from True Detective 1 & 2 to bust out at the Quaker meeting
All timer
If the hat does not fit, you must acquit!
okay this was an absolute banger episode, incredible prestige that was simply too perfect to expect
28:25 One God, No Chairs
As a Quaker, this is the best content about Quakers by non-quakers I've ever encountered. Lots of leftists like Quakers, but don't really get Quakers; you've captured the essence.
Wow the dodgeball went zipping past Nova this time and connected with Mattie.
loyola chicago mention
Magna farta is unbelievable. Reminds me of going to the castle of a Danish nobleman from the 1600s, where they had a prank fart chair with a whoopee cushion type thing in the seat. It was so popular they had to re-upholster it several times.
I would like a source on hopped beer being a Dutch invention; I'm pretty sure that has more of a Bavaria/Bohemia origin
I’m imagining the jury coming out to tell the judge William 2 didn’t do shit and he just starts 67ing at the judge to drive him insane Also I was on the Autobahn driving home when Mattie said someone was going to have a car accident, I was never this awake listening to a podcast before
I think it’s vitally important to know that I hit the punchline here while actively on a Septa bus. The moment I heard the words “two Williams” I thought “surely not” and yet….miracles every day in the great country of Penn’s Woods.
Ok, Nova's always been good at this but lately she is on a TEAR, goddamn
Speak a little English for him William showing what we was working on in the Tower of London
I grew up in quite an evangelical Protestant climate, veggietales, bible camps and various other atrocities against the concept of religion. I became atheist and dropped out of all that. Nowadays I think to myself, were I to become religious again it would be either to go Catholic or to go Quaker. From what I understand quakerism is often non-theistic so they aren't even really in tension...
I couldn't find what model the helo rescue used but I hope someone took the occasion to deploy a serious Dudes Rock model like a CH53 Motherfucker Unlimited or CH46 Maximum Chud
„No listening with hats on, or we‘ll come getcha.“ I am currently on a construction site with mandatory PPE but I am reaching slowly for my hard hat and glancing over at my colleagues fearfully for I must obey…
I was not familiar with any of the details of this story, but having grown up and lived most of my life in [REDACTED], I felt ancestral familiarity deep in my bones - totally moored by history. This one was a cozy listen for me.
I cannot believe supporting charging someone to be rescued? Sorry but I don‘t care who you are or how much you have, rescue needs to be free. People will absolutely die if that‘s the precedent being set. How is this remotely controvercial.
My great grandfather, as well as being a photographer of some renown, was a quaker and was imprisoned as a conscientious objecter during WWI. In secondary school we talked about our family's experience of the wars and I bought this up. My 1990s protochud history teacher basically said "no not like that" and I got bullied for having a cowardly ancestor. Quakers are God's actual special children and they will never not get shit on.
Jean-Marc Peillex is the anti Larry Vaugn
A fucking masterpiece of a story, Nova. 👏
My new england is ajoy with this episode. Keep on quaking and shaking y'all.
oh my god when Nova mentioned jury nullification I immediately went "holy shit just like Palestine Action!" what a masterstroke lol
Interestingly the reason why the lawyer for Palestine Action is being charged with contempt of court is because in his closing statement he told the story of the two Williams and pointed out that the judge couldn't direct the jury in making a decision. (Scroll to about a third of the way down) https://realmedia.press/the-filton-trial-defence-speeches/
S tier ep, thank you ladies
Let's go Philadelphia, only city in the US that doesn't need a land acknowledgement
Feathered caps doffed for our brave Arabian Knights
Hold firm
Is this the case that gave the precedent for the defend our juries “a jury has an absolute right to acquit according to their conscience” sign?
I know it's a throwaway line but I want to highlight "I was 21, I thought things meant something," because I think we're all prey to this occasionally no matter how old we are - I certainly am. It's hard not to have main character syndrome when your perspective refuses to budge from first person. Also I'm not convinced that magical thinking is any worse for you than reason, as far as life outcomes go
Sure until the magical thinking starts affecting the world in massive negative ways *gestures at everything*
This was great, but to the point about everyone in England not knowing what to do about Quakers since no one had invented the prison yet, I feel I should point out that this is because QUAKERS hadn't invented prisons yet. It was Quakers who had the idea that sitting in silent penance, in something called a penitentiary, might be a better punishment than whipping someone. They were pioneers of this new form of punishment in Pennsylvania, and have starring role as a result in a couple of sections of Discipline and Punish. Their innovative ideas about prisons were also why Alexis de Tocqueville was sent to the USA in the first place as part of a French government commission for the study of prisons!
Prisons are essentially a failed experiment in rehabilitative justice, which is so interesting given what they have become
I think what adds a lot to the french mountain mayor is the fact that french mayors, especially in small municipalities are part time and basically unpaid. this guy is getting incredibly mad at mountain climbers purely for the love of the game
“You don’t have to be dead to be a toboggan” is surely a precept
Startled my co-subwayfolk by howling at the toboggan bit.
Thank you for your ministry, November.
Yay Liam!
“Worshipful company of management consultants” is a hideous phrase.
"The early modern period was last week" brings up the obvious corollary "we are currently living through a historical period akin to the chaos in the UK between the Renaissance and peak colonialism/the Enlightenment etc" that immediately made me think the thought "oh god Mars is Australia"
Magna... farta...
Judges back then were real assholes. I read a quote from one of the notorious “hanging judges” of that time where he remarked on sentencing some poor wretch to death for stealing a watch (!), “ah, my friend, you reached for minutes but grasped eternity!”
As a Quaker this was a really delightful surprise. I have in the past described my faith as helping me be professionally annoying (that and having had to explain that Quaker Oats is not a Quaker company). As a non theist Quaker we also sometimes fall into a fun theological grey zone with regards to Christianity
The serenity sometimes is just looking at the floor and appearing serene
WE ARE SAILING TO PHILADELPHIA!
GO BIRDS
No Gods No Chairs, thank you
Quaker Rick Ross with the Timbs that say SERENE OFF SILENCE
Well, thank you for your ministry.
T-shirt idea, Ye Old Thug life Quaker
If he was not heard, he must not be abjured
Fart is in old english is it not
The street plan did change from the medieval if not in style; all because the plans were not quickbenough because... 60% of london was ash ppl need places to live...
The spirit moves me to say thus to thou: Go birds
Getting mad because this episode is cyberpunk in the way of the classic cyberpunk authors just borrowed a fuck load of early modern bullshit
Whats thus about inner peace?! Please reffer to our friend Benjamin Lay!
This was an impossibly good episode.
Hall of fame episode entrant immediately
As a linguist, thank you for the indo-european language family tree joke, as someone who was listening on a plane, thank you for startling me with your fasten seatbelt noise
So when pendulum swings and trans ppl demand their dues... Most Honorable Armed Company of the Gendermerie
I was raised Quaker! It was entirely old hippies, 50% of whom were atheists or pagan and looking for the community around church without the religion aspect. Lots of very strange people. Not a religion for a kid with severe adhd. Went to a lot of antiwar protests. A few of the most passive aggressive people I’ve ever met. (My dad was raised Baptist, we came to the states, went to a snake church by accident and assumed all American churches were like that, ran as far away from that as possible and ended up Quaker.)
But.. but then its not a religion? If you dont believe in god?
Listen to Bloodworth
For more on The Great Fire of London, watch Well There's Your Problem!
I love Mattie's exasperated tone in saying "ſacebook"
Would Gerrard Winstanley count as a mayor, in the vein of Etienne Cabet?
The writer Sam Copperbadge uses Leidan as a noble title for nonbinary people in his romance novels. The root of lord from old English is hlāford, meaning bread protector. The root of lady is hlǣfdige, meaning bread maker. So Cobberbadge got Leidan from the old English for bread eater. I think it's great and want it adopted wholesale
IIRC, a fae-court romance I read some months back used "Gentle" for a non-binary noble fae. That one was... fine, I suppose, but I'm impressed with the level of etymological rigor going into "Leidan." 😁
My vision of 17th Century 9/11 is loading up a Brigatine sailing ship into a comically oversized catapult and lining up the City of London Guildhalls
"Thin gruel" my ass November that was amazing.
Listen to (Thomas) Bloodworth
Likes aren’t sufficient; this deserves love in the form of a comment
As a complimentary point to the helicopter rescue item, might I remind the mayoralty about the dude in Montana who hiked 10 miles back down the mountain with a treking pole stabbed in himself, because he didn't want to get billed for a rescue. https://www.bbc.com/news/videos/cvg0nlkmzewo
I have never felt the yearning for religion or God. I understand the value that religion can offer you, as a source of meaning, comfort, and guidance, but I do not have a God-shaped hole in my soul. I only find religion personally valuable as a source of philosophical inquiry and perspective. So it's kind of alien to me to be so strangely uncomfortable in a Quaker meeting. I don't experience that feeling, I'm perfectly content.
let me quote wikipedia: The English word fart is one of the oldest words in the English lexicon. Its Indo-European origins are confirmed by the many cognate words in some other Indo-European languages
indoeuropeans are famously fixated on that stuff
I know this is the least important thing in this episode, but I just want to say: Fuck grid systems, desire lines all the way baby
If the thesis of this episode is that these people were more or less us now, you can’t tell me, that they didn’t find the idea of getting gagged in the nasty hole at least a little bit funny
Making the quaker jedi comparison and not going all the way to Quake-Gon Jin is a serious disappointment.
They’re leaving space for the listener to fill in their own jokes. It’s a jazz thing.
Shout out to best Quaker boy Benjamin Lay who was 4 foot tall, a vegetarian, lived in a cave and once kidnapped the child of slave owners to make a point
You mean the author, in 1737, of "All Slave-Keepers That Keep the Innocent in Bondage, Apostates"?
I'd like to share my favorite line of poetry about beer, written by Sam Sax: "Enough grain stored up for it to get weird in the cistern."
Grew up unitarian, a lot of the same vibes. Its just like oh yeah these guys are right
Nothing to rebel against. A teens worst nightmare
Hello. I work for the Writers Guild of Great Britain and will ask our Audio Chair to help you fill out the requisite paperwork to become The Worshipful Company of Podcasters
1:00:50 oh, my sweet summer child; see the opening of Ben Jonson's "the alchemist": 'i fart at thee". The carnivalesque was a constant in early modern English, flaetus and all. See also the pioneering navigator whose name escapes me who was so mortified at breaking wind in the royal presence he circumnavigated the globe to repair his rep, only for liz 1 to say "my lord! We had forgot the fart!"
Anecdote about Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford and leading candidate for ‘Guy who wrote the works of Shakespeare if you believe the conspiracy theories (which you shouldn’t),’ related in John Aubrey’s “Brief Lives.” Aubrey was writing around a century after this supposedly happened, which I guess technically makes it dubious, but…
I respect a Quaker more than any other Protestant and I respect upsetting the British class system but as a Jew the serenity and quiet is not familiar at all I’d have been unsettled like November in that situation.
It's like if someone from Boston was nice to you? For no reason?
Huzzah! I loved the last visit to the City of London, looking forward to this one.
