Art Martinez de Vara
This week, mayor Mattie takes us to Von Ormy, Texas to talk about the "Liberty City" movement. It's the story of four (?) mayors.
The story of a town.
The story....of Us.
Thanks to Victoria from Tran Girlismo for Victoria's Car Corner.

I always read MAHA like Baaahaaa
Would a council leader be acceptable for the bumper? (I live in a city we abolished the mayor, you’ve covered it previously)
@ 53:54 November you have once again lathed. I kid you not, I have seen people comments on an article about nhs bowel screen where people were saying why does the government want my poo what are they making it.
If I get a failed candidate for mayor to record the bumper can I get 6 months of the bonus feed?
Not me listening to this while doing yardwork on my well and septic-reliant property 🥲 Fun fact: this fall is Municipal Election Palooza in Ontario (all municipalities have their elections) and in the town of 500 that I live in, there are seven candidates running for six spots. But none of them have any public facing policy positions. My neighbour's entire campaign is his name, the council position, and the year. Feeling very good about the leadership we are going to get out of this race.
Though Cinderella made the pact They only planned to subcontract The fiber optic line they crack'd Beneath the renovated lot My daughter-child is confused Of when the playground might be used Tell it to Arthur Dornfeld who's The Mayor of Shallotte
It is the raptors year, go raps fuck the lakers fuck the cavs and especially fuck LeBron James
Does a village manager count - my hometown village manager lived down my street and is a pretty nice guy
The Bis will claim November
Behold, the snide british petit bourgeoisie continue undermining the workers struggle in the imperial core with their perpetuation of woke 1 vs 2 discourse 😡
I hope the halo chants to continue
Fun fact: in Budapest, Hungary, there’s an Ormay Norbert Street (the von Ormay from the episode)
We are a stupid ass small country
The "x" in "Bexar" is silent, so it is pronounced /bɛər/. My understanding is that it used to be pronounced /bɛhɑːr/ when spanish was the dominant language in the area and that over time english speakers morphed that into it's current pronounciation. Many placenames in the area underwent similar pronounciation changes with perhaps the silliest being Gruene, TX which is now a homophone of the word "green".
Art Dornfeld. Oaky, very oaky. Notes of dried cherry, little bit of lemongrass, and…hmm…swish swish…Doritos Cool Ranch?
i've been listening to so much of this podcast i had a dream last night about my dad becoming mayor?? he did a terrible job lol
Art Dornfeld has tasting notes of hot dust on a steam radiator in an old middle school with highlights of cardboard and ozone.
Who knew Von Ormy was so municipal
25:15 There are actual cicadas buzzing outside my house AS YOU SAY THIS.
I would love a No Gods No Mayors tote to bring to municipal activities and rallies against being coup’d by the Brooklyn party bosses (for the second time since 2020)!
Please let me make you a soundscape…. I just got a body horror and gothic mystery SFX pack! I could be persuaded to get a nautical one.. ahoy!
pretty sure it’s pronounced « Šalłètť »…
I love Victoria's Car Corner (beep beep) ♡
Resident Evil: teXas
"'The curse has come upon me' cried the mayor of Shallot"
The mayor of Shallotte attempting to avoid legal liability for his actions by claiming a large mirror fell on his head while moving into the municipal shack
The bit at the end gave me the vision of a listener who was already working on an "analyze jan6 people" project and then adds "former or current mayor/municipal leader" as a parameter. And then we get this big serious journalistic report collating all the arrest reports and among statistics like race, income, and previous criminal history there's also mayor status.
sorry you mentioned a milky queen and i got so horny i couldnt think straight. or gay. tell me more about continuous milking in harvard illinois
Is Liam a Tulpa of Nova's Phillyphile id, that is to say Nova's Philly-ID-elfian
Texan HongKong is just the port at Galveston
No Gods No Mayors Tiny Desk Concert when?
San Antonio is absolutely full of little townlets. One of the wealthier of which (Olmos Park) debates walling themselves off from the rest of the city about once every 10 years. Amusingly, Bexar county is pronounced 'bear'. It's a anglosation of the Spanish pronunciation 'be-har'.
Damn, y'all mispronouncing Charlotte like you're from Rochester
I winced when I heard it, but the town in question is Shallotte, not Charlotte.
She dorn on my feld till I art.
She also feld on my art till I dorn
My tasting notes for “Art Dornfeld” are hefeweizen and that weird smell that so many installations have (is it epoxy? Crumbled dry wall? Beeswax?)
Re: ringer mayor who is good at boxing: former world heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko is the current mayor of Kiev! Also, true intellectuals consider the Illinois Harvard to be superior to the Massachusetts Harvard. The reason Harvard MA alums like to be vague about where they went to college that they’re hoping people will be confused and assume they went to the Illinois Harvard.
Spoiler + content warning - - - I think this might fail the “Is This Municipal” judgement, but I submit my hyperlocal community connection to January 6th anyway: the late wife of the owner of my favorite local pizzeria was involved in J6. I’m unclear on whether she was physically in D.C. or running supplies/guns to other people who went. This is so small-potatoes that I literally cannot verify the hearsay online. I don’t know if the owner himself was involved, but presumably he stayed back to run the pizzeria, because it wasn’t closed during the riots. The wildest part for me personally is how I found out about this. My partner was a regular at this pizzeria for many years, so he had a very neighborly relationship with everyone who worked there, but of course they weren’t really close enough to talk about partisan politics. You can make some guesses about American small business owners, but we live in a swing state and they didn’t make their partisan opinions public in any way. They didn’t even have a bumper sticker. So we both just assumed the owner and his wife were Median American Voter types. A couple years later, the owner’s wife died by suicide (unrelated, as far as I know). Understandably, the pizzeria was going to be closed for a few weeks. So when my partner and I asked why, the owner told us about her death and the circumstances of her passing. This was the only thing I knew about her at that time. A few days later, I was catching up with an old friend, and I said solemnly “did you hear about [redacted]’s wife?” And my friend reveals to me, “oh, yeah, she was running guns for January 6th protesters, right?” And I think that’s the most social whiplash I’ve ever experienced in my entire life.
NORTH CAROLINA MENTIONED
Just weed? Piff.
where are your art hoes?! I’ve been right here the whole time ladies!! (embroidered ngnm items in progress)
despite being officially NOT MUNICIPAL, here's the Brooklyn democratic party vid btw: https://youtu.be/YfuLGFqieKw
Art Dornfeld’s campaign flyers originally had his hotmail address or whatever on them, which was something like “Dorndog20@hotmail”
"Boston Harvard"? You mean the medical school, the business school, or the athletic facilities? Harvard is a primarily Canterbridgian school. It's the second best University in Cambridge, MA and the third best in the Boston area.
Fun fact (probably not but I’m excited to have something to contribute), the x is silent in Bexar.
a bexar is an enby with a hairy chest... (sorry)
Said art dornfeld, felt nothing
When you first saw the mayortaculous, did its majesty blind you?
Hell yeah I've been expecting this ever since I read the propublica article. I think I even tagged nogodsnomayors bluesky at the time.
Art....right.. smh
i frequently drive down to visit my partners family in the suburbs north of chicago and usually have to drive through harvard. weird town.
I worked at a public university in Texas for years, and it's always an insane fact to drop on people that we had a hiring freeze in 2015 because the price of oil cratered
As someone who's currently going through the whole franchise, this is Resident Evil 4 with a bit of 8.
Gilet mentioned
I am SO SHOCKED by this ending. Please do a bonus episode on those mayors. We need to know.
I love that Rozc and Liam have converted November to being a Philly sports fan, much to Mattie's chagrin.
I heard "chant" and I instinctively knew what must follow
„Art Dornfeld“ will have just spiked as a search term
I'm going to be saying "Art Dornfeld" to myself while doing chores for weeks. Weeks, I tell you!
(like children on a playground) my mayor could beat up your mayor
