John Willison Green

Crank the crank crank...We've got a crank! Mayor November takes us to Canada for a guy that we have to reveal his weird thing first because it's too weird.

Here's his weird friend's weird hairline:

And here's that accursed website: http://www.greatervancouverparks.com/HARRISONSandCastles01.html

I finally came back to this episode page to check out the Accursed Website, and the strangely melancholic lighting works *so* well with exactly one of the sand sculpture photos. There’s one photo of four different sculptures, which all have a clock theme. If you’re looking for it, it’s between the tipi and the hexagons. All four of the clocks sort of work with the sad vibe, but the one in the back right especially works. It seems to be about fertility and the feeling of running out of time. I am so unironically here for expressing sad concepts through whimsical art forms, but the weird lighting and near-nonexistent web design combine with it to make it into a new piece of art

Over a decade ago, John Green (author) denied bigfoot's existence. He claimed John Green (mayor) later wrote to him to say he was a disgrace to John Greens everywhere. I can't find it right now, but I swear it's in a vlogbrothers video.

Two things: 1) You can absolutely rent out the Diefenbunker for events. I have definitely done a scotch tasting that could have survived a nuclear blast. PLEAAAAAAAAASE host a show on the bunker. 2) Riley, there is currently an auction in Kingston, Ontario that includes the item "140 Books about Canada." If I buy it, can we start the Canada Stuff podcast?

A suit with no shoes is how you get buried. Wearing that daily is more goth than a black lace corset and chalk white foundation, which might also be in Riley's wardrobe. EDIT: Chief Editsman Sam has the patience of a saint. EDIT2: Mate ran into an Elder Scrolls NPC. "Have you heard of Bigfoot?" "I saw a Bigfoot the other day, nasty creatures." "Do you get out to British Columbia much? What am I saying? Of course you don't." Manbeast mentioned! I'll make you higher up! HYAH!

I cannot stress enough how much bigfoot hunters refuse to believe in normal animals. I had a family friend growing up who was a devout bigfoot believer, and nothing was ever deer, bears, raccoons or birds to him. Obviously only a bigfoot could have so perfectly split open these melons or whatever other thing we left out to see if they would come and get it

The major in Cambridge sounds like the EDI lead for the lgbt+ taskforce at *redacted* university that I was previously on. The one time we got fed up and asked her to do her job (take the minutes or something) she said we were bullying her and brought the fucking provost to the next meeting as back up 🙃

It’s 1:39 am and I’m teary over big foot mayor’s story and the prose you presented it 10/10 I’m a trans wheelchair user and furry on a municipal accessibility council, so my gaze is inclined to shift towards the margins of a space and community since it’s where all my freaks (positive) are too. “And it will also destroy a stone bench outside a village office, dedicated to Mayor John Greene” evoked so many of the little towns I know and love built on crumbling finances, flood plains, fault lines and fire paths (If you’re my birth city, it’s on all four). Beyond the material goods lost, what I mourn in our struggling towns is the stories that go unrecorded, especially in their fringes. It’s why I adore the tyee and our small local publications so much. Reporting and narratives like NGNM help preserve the subtle traces of our freaks, better and worse .A rainbow flag here, a janky ramp there. A scout-troop funded by Bigfoot. Normal stuff. It’s not like the globe and mail is about to cover the international puppet convention happening in my rural community, or the queer fashion in the valley exhibit at our old mill. Also now that there’s two Sam’s if they ever reconcile, they could unionize

Gods & angels how the fuck am i crying?! How was that eulogy shaped so beautifully? Like ppl put too much of the onus of beauty on the beheld when in truth of the two it is the beholder that causes things to be lovely by loving the world despite & because it all. Thanks for letting one see things as you do.

You could probably have one or the other Ιωάννης Σμαραγδοιν brothers spin you a weird but Mostly Harmless or even Inspirational Mayor from either #######, Cornfield, USA or "OMFG THEY WERE STILL A NECROPORTAL COLONY FOR MONACO UNTIL 2014?! I am still vibrating from the nostalgia hits this episode inflicted: the time when my father told me to shake Diefenbaker's hand in a smalltown greasy spoon (and my Red Clyde-raised mother firmly said 'no'); teenage years in the midpoint town between Vancouver and Harrison Hot Springs, at school with two guys whose German immigrant father had Certain Opinions (and named his sons Helmut and Attila); my best friend's father being Sasquatch-obsessed in the 70s...oh, and the farther up the Fraser River you go, the stronger the Twin Peaks/Hills Have Eyes vibes get.

Two things: As someone who was a scout in the Fraser Valley during the 2000s, if a strange old man had come by with a big cheque to tell Sasquatch stories, I would have been absolutely delighted. Second, if you do actually come to Harrison Hot springs, I have to recommend The nearby Farmhouse Natural Cheeses. Their goat cheese is excellent. I also work at the nearby agricultural research station, hit me up if you want to see the bugs.

I'm the reverse of the autistic-kid-who-finds-bigfoot: I was devouring my local library's cryptozoology section. I was all about the bigfoots, the UFOs, ESP, ancient aliens, all that stuff! but it turns out the dewey decimal system puts all that stuff at 001, and after that? computer stuff. So I went in to learn about bigfoots in flying saucers, and discovered computer programming, and that's been my job my entire adult life.

There's something sad about how this kind of crank is basically extinct now and has been replaced by Alex Jones crypto fascist style cranks. Robert Evans talked about it in one of the behind the bastard's episodes, but it used to be that cranks were ultimately decent well-intentioned people who believed in something that was silly but harmless and nowadays cranks are people who believe that "BIGFOOT IS REAL BUT THE JEWS ARE HIDING THE TRUTH AND WE MUST SAVE THE WEST BY BUYING THIS LEAD CONTAMINATED SUPPLEMENTS AND ROUNDING UP THE TRANSGENDERS!". I miss this kind of crank you get the feeling if he was still around, he would happily get on the podcast and talk about being a mayor.

R
Raymond Price · June 25, 2026

It's not all good in the past, because the old cranks included the people who wrote the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and Rush Limbaugh-types, but yeah, I miss the old days when it was people who thought they'd found a new critter or a new way of doing things. Cribbing from a remembrance of and titled "Art Bell, Chaplain to Crackpots", a lot of the difference is that those old cranks weren't interested in *blaming* anybody, which means that they had cool stories about Bigfoot and Atlantis and meeting aliens, rather than the old cliches about the evil Satanic Jews suppressing the truth. They may have had bad science, but not bad faith.
