Jacques Médecin
After we all yell at each other about bugs and shrimps, mayor Riley takes us to France for a Gaullist weirdo who also wrote a cookbook?

Oh here's that guy Estrosi in costume as Jacques:

"Pissweak" and "weak as piss" are both reference to cheap beer, and "piss" in Australian parlance. See also: the KJB Mad Max Fury Road episode. Quinn was setting up sequels like a Marvel movie, lol.
Came here to say this (much like the fury road ep)
I’m really disappointed that not one of you seized on his flight to Uruguay to say that he had truly become “Medicin Sans Frontiers”
No Gods, No Payers, (the free episode)
a feudal lord is typically not civic government, rather they tend to own the land and charters of the township but civic government develops independent; leading to a multipolar struggle between the crown, the local lord, the clergy/university, and the muni which involved the guilds and raised the mayor from the common folk. as if Wampyes would dirty their hands with schedules and minutes and planning the alegorical cars for the Nomo Chomo Carnival parade
because of this the pope makes a poor maioral choice and one should look towards the protector of the Mayoral Custom (mos maiorum) that is to say the censors. So the head inquisitor
e-rattigan. Mattie is being persecuted like Galileo Galileo Figaro
All mayor and no gods makes Riley a dull gyol
I love an episode with a cursed mayoral artifact. First Sam Yorty's autobiography, now the Fascist Niçois Cookbook
Give sam a raise
Monsieur Nice Gars
As the world formost municipal investigations team, aside from the flying squadron of portugese inspector detectors, I assume you gals are on the Pratt Los Angeles beat. That seems like its going to be a carwreck.
Consider: mayors is popes?
My very chaotic thoughts while listening to this episode: 1) every time Riley is referred to as "he" my spine twists a little 2) at the same time, I've never felt spiritually closer to Riley than hearing the description of criticisms from extended French in-laws. I spent a summer in a farmhouse near Dijon with a family I almost married into and it changed me (not just because I ate my weight in mirabelles). 3) it feels like the adage of politicians in the 60s/70s was less "he steals but he works" and more "he steals but he isn't a filthy red" and that is just inherently less charming. 4) the French may have not been parfait but it was still infinitely mieux than the pronunciation of "Gagnon" on Lions Led By Donkeys this week, which at a certain part started to feel like trolling.
These precepts aren't very immortal if they can just be changed willy-nilly like that.
If the pope can declare that purgatory no longer exists, surely we can accept that bugs is now shrimps. So is it written, so shall it be 🦐🦗
Re:Bugs Is Shrimp, I think the relevant question is: Is Spiders Bugs? If yes, then "Shrimps is Bugs" still works as a precept, as you're just using "Bug" to mean "arthropod". If not, then the precept may need to change, depending on if Centipedes is Bugs, Springtails is Bugs, Tardigrades is Bugs, etc., until you determine that no Bugs exist outside of Pancrustacea.
exoskeleton is bugs. hard and fast
Nice and Osaka is a great partnership of Cities That Have a Notoriously Weird Accent
Wait you folk have a discord? Where abouts would I find the link?
Incredible schism music.
I feel obligated to record that the space French in Star Wars are the Twi'lek, a people who are highly fetishized in galactic culture and historically exploited and trafficked by the Hutts. There's nothing French coded about them other than their accents.
I was like, I hope some other nerd has told them about Twi’leks…
I thought for sure I was about to hear Schism by Tool for that drop!
Riley: "I sound like I have a Quebecois accent." Um, it's a very strong (Canadian) English accent
@7:00 it’s funny cuz discord is also a record label.
56:45 that's just wrong. Mitterand was an absolute traitor, he used the far left electorate rallied behind the PCF to get to power before undertaking the Tournant de la Rigueur, ushering in the same type of privatizations and tax reductions you'd see on the other side of the Channel.
i think they might have been talking about how the french establishment *perceived* the Mitterand victory rather than what he actually did
To be fair, Osaka is a classic place to be hold up during an embattlement.
As a terminally anglophone New Zealand woman who just moved to fucking Montreal I assure you the fact that I don't speak French is ABSOLUTELY my problem
Hi!
if bugs is shrimp then mayors are popes
Don't worry Reily, you never sound Quebecois. On your best days your French sounds Albertan.
Wait there were only 3 shows why did Riley do 4 doses of estrogen?
No I was SO thrown off by Mattie calling Riley “him”
Episode idea- is a lord of a medieval castle a mayor? 'Cause then November could do an episode on Renaud de Chatillion.
BREAKING: Anti-Mayor November I. has moved the mayoralty to Avignon in NGNMs first municipal schism!
The Dischord schism will echo through history.
Re: The restaurant named Restaurant. My favorite Thai place in Boston was called Thai Place. Sadly last time I was in the area it was closed because the building it was in had a fire, I don't know if the managed to reopen.
Oh man I can't wait for them to find out about the California mayor who turned out to be a Chinese op
my god it's jack medicine, inventor of medicine
We call him Jackie Drugs ‘round these parts
Every time you do an episode on a French mayor I’m reminded of the one of my hometown, who actually chose suicide over going to jail for his “Chinese weddings” scam. (Wiki article in French only, but google translate est votre ami: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affaire_des_mariages_chinois_%C3%A0_Tours ). So little money involved, too. If only he had had a 10th of the gall of say, Sarkozy, Balkany or François Fillon. Tiny erratum: "Divers droite" isn't "alternative right", it's "misc. right". (As a side note: I’m actually always impressed with both Riley and November’s pronunciation of French words. Mostly 8/10, really.)
merci bien can’t wait to practice my comp on this wiki
Shrimps is bugs, bugs is shrimp
And also with you
Autistic trans woman with a Masters in History here, really happy to see an episode on this guy because I have been wanting to pitch an episode of Médecin's spiritual kindred (and his father's on and off collaborator), Simon Sabiani the "shadow" mayor of Marseille during the lead up to and peak of the Vichy years. I had a massive google doc of sources I was putting together for him before my attention fizzled out, but this episode has definitely inspired me to take another look at it <3 Great episode, gals. Edit: gosh thanks for the hearts, I woke up super excited, finished up the doc this morning and sent it in, so hope the hosts enjoy!
I had the pleasure of visiting Nice in 2024, past the tenure of this mayor but it is still fun to connect this story to my memories of it. I distinctly remember thinking 'what if a french man was italian' at least a dozen times daily as I sae and met the inhabitants of the city. Incredible energy.
