Troy Thompson
This week on No Gods No Mayors, mayor Mattie takes us to the city of Townsville, Australia for an encounter with a man weak of spine and weak of spirit. SAS guy, Cancer survivor, self-described "business man," and Q-Anon if the A an Anon stood for "Australian."
This is a FREE episode! If you like the show, pitch in 5 bucks a month on this very Patreon and get double the mayors!

Townsville mentioned! I was born there* (is not great, and Robert Townes for whom it was named was the kind of evil that gets an Australian city named after you.) I used to live on Maggy Island as well. Captain Cook called it that because he thought it was a massive magnet that was fucking with his compass but he was just shit at compass. *Technically I was born in Thuringowa because that's where the women's hospital was but in 2008 Townsville are it so now I was born in Townsville. I will not stand for ANZAC bickie slander! The version that civilians eat nowadays are full of sugar and taste good nowadays. The ones the actual ANZACs had to eat while sitting on a beach at a cliff face being were more... practical in nature. I was looking forward to this guy getting an episode as soon as I started on this back catalogue. I lived there at the time, lol.
This guy is probably the worst liar in mayoral history.
November, Israel IS Police Israel
One of the guys from the Dollop already did a podcast called West Wing Thing.
Embellishing a real service record is considered a form of stolen valor in the US, and like Nova said it used to be a lot more common.
this episode was front loaded with a lot of info about this dude that happened to be bizarrely reminiscent of my dad, including the oesophageal cancer diagnosis, so naturally i spent this whole episode getting madder and madder that this idiot chud got to survive that cancer when my dad didnt. The fucking noise i made upon getting to the final reveal sounded like i had been punched in the throat oh my GOD
Troy Thompson: 100 concussions cannot be wrong!
Starting my new job as the foley artist for the Mayor-ie Home Companion
replaying the ANZAC Day reveal at about 43:30 over and over like I’m rewatching a Steph Curry circus shot
The fluoride in the water thing is my favorite because my dentist here in Portland moved here to be a dentist on purpose because we don’t use fluoride in the city water. She makes bank. She told me this because the second I met her she opened my mouth for the first time said you ain’t from around here, I can tell because your teeth aren’t riddled with cavities. She told me within 7 years of living in a non fluoride water area and my teeth will be on par with the locals. Terrifying knowledge ma’am. Thankfully we moved to a suburb city that does use fluoride. I just think about her making them dollars and now wanna be a traveling con artist dentist that only goes to fluoride free cities
Please cover the New Zealand version of this guy. He's called Vince Coccurulo, looks absolutely insane, has wanted nothing more than to be mayor of the small town of Whangarei for 14 years, and was ousted after one term when he tried to sue the government for putting fluoride in the water. He's now claiming to be a victim of hate speech against fluoride skeptics. https://newsroom.co.nz/2025/10/13/latest-mayor-to-be-ousted-claims-hes-a-victim-of-hate-speech/
Was waiting for yall to reach the analogy I use which is that Queensland is the Florida of Australia and you actually made it almost all the way there!
emineMP, thank you all
The best thing about this stolen valour is that he's not just in catering, he's a RESERVIST which is advertised as "you can do an evening a week and some training every now and then and still serve your country". In theory they exist so Australia can call up extra troops if needed.
Yeah, they exist as padding between the folks already in active duty and the folks who join BECAUSE you went to war. The Abu Ghraib scandal was around a version of this we have in the US.
I’m picturing the red text in the document being in like 72pt comic sans.
Zuldek Damnami, the Anti-Mayor of Bizarro New York (Old York?)
Mattie has a meme blowing up on reddit, 15.4K upvotes, and its about hopefully tearing the rich apart
So before this episode, I knew Queensland as “that place where Brisbane is, and thus where Bluey takes place”. After listening to it, I dread to imagine what kind of politics the Heeler family have.
It's generally accepted that the Heelers live in Red Hill, which is in a federal electorate that was part of a massive surge of Greens support in Brisbane back in 2022, leading to an unprecedented number of Greens MPs being elected to Federal parliament. The Heelers' member would have been Max Chandler-Mather, who was exceptionally vocal advocating for affordable housing, and seemed to actively deal psychic damage to the (Labor) Prime Minister whenever he spoke, and was a target of backlash at the next election, where all bar one of the Greens seats were reclaimed. So The Heelers probably consider themselves socially progressive, but may have balked at the vaguest hint that their property values should decrease
Proud defendant
I get a feeling of national pride and complete embarrassment when anyone non Australian is aware of One nation, formerly Pauline Hanson One Nation, formally One Nation
You could say, "I don't like it"
I'm sorry, one hundred PLUS concussions? Holy shit this guy is Facebook brainrot with legs
What was the name of Victoria Scott's podcast?
Trans Girlismo it's really really good lmao
Mayor's mental health can strike at any time.
Ladies I am constantly impressed by the weird little Australian idiosyncrasies you seem to know and love. I knew I was in good hands when you covered Darren Lyons
Karácsony Gergely can be translated as Greg Christmas btw. That pride was my first, a glorious march. The best part is local Nazis tried to show up....21 of them came. They were publicly shamed and humiliated by tens of thousands of people. Btw Karigeri is worth an entire episode by himself. Nova is right he is kinda off in some weird things. Like how he just wanted to end crime in a notorious street by just Simscity dropping down the HQ for the local anti-terrorist high command right in top of it. I fucking love Budapest.
Karácsony by the way, although generally nice, is also a big zio (which isn’t a surprising twist in Hungarian politics, but y’know)… This is why I could not bring myself to vote for him. We have interesting mayors and ex-mayors in this country, he is a complicated one.
I have a close friend that works at a safe injection site and was saying that they have a known music policy after a certain hour so it's just talk radio. So they put together a playlist of various podcasts from within the Novaverse to play when they're working the closing shifts.
The mayor of Brooklyn Park, MN from 1991 to 1995 also had stolen valor allegations, though that was just claiming to be a Seal when he was merely an Underwater Demolition Team frogman. But overall he is probably better known for things other than his mayoralty or claimed service history.
WHY would you lie on that lmao. I guess some people are just in it for the love of the game
I have a buddy in the movie biz and, he says a cousin of a guy he knows is working on a movie called "The Caterer", where Jason Statham plays an Australian Army Catering Corp private, who's actually a Special Forces Operator, and once ended a battalion of ISIS North Koreans with a fork and a bag of Tayto crisps.
Delighted to see this horrendous guy featured by my favourite Mayors. I unfortunately realise that the non-Australian hosts are not aware of the Golden Gaytime and therefore my reason for making this my user name...
Golden gay times are such a national treasure… that and Bubble’o Bills
As mentioned above, local elections tend to do the "One Guy's team" thing since they tend to be less along party lines, but that formulation really kicked off on a national level in 2013 when local gronk billionaire Clive Palmer got kicked out of the Queensland LNP and started the Palmer United Party in protest. That then escalated into PUP winning several Lower House and senate seats in that year's federal election. By the NEXT election, pretty much everyone who was in PUP got sick of Palmer's shit and left the party to start their own things eg. The Jackie Lambie Network, The Glen Lazarus Team. Which led to a kind of craze of independents and minor parties doing the same Eg. Pauline Hanson's One Nation and the Katter Australia party.
Optimus Prime is not a mayor, but Starscream was one time! Specifically in the first IDW comic series he became, yes, the mayor of Cybertron, and had underhanded political dealings with the mayors of other Transformers planets! (This is also the arc where we found out he has actual literal dysphoria because his soul was shoved into a mass-produced body so he could be used as a child soldier in the ongoing civil war.)
I felt spiritually healed by the concussions jokes After so much bleak news there’s something so pleasing about losing your shit to physical comedy
I love hearing you guys talk about Pauline Hanson, she's completely insane. She has no real policy strategies, she's just the most ridiculous performing monkey who constantly engages in shock value stunts and professional whinging.
I grew up in Queensland, ama
how many pairs of rear tires did you smoke while hooning and/or how many hoons did you catch
a "sewer fascist" both in the sense that he therefrom emerged and also in the same sense as "sewer socialist"
Anti-woke virtue signallers doing the 'I stand with Ukraine' thing but for Russia
realised while I was typing this that this is literally just what liberal zionists do 😔
Just a Tommy Talarico level of "wait, has anything he's ever said been true?!"
In complete fairness, I don't remember my service number either
LET A HUNDRED CONCUSSIONS BLOOM Additionally, jeers to the A Current Affair guy for not asking the mayor what the color of the Boat House at Swanbourne is
This is a very Tommy Tallarico ass mayor
His mother must be very proud of him.
Wow. I can't believe this guy stole my medals from when I was Australian & in the SAS Nova does not in fact know he did no war crimes... he might have improperly used the Red Cross
18' in, your west scotland football joke was not entirely unappreciated Nova
Business man.
I asked my transformers specialist interest friend and she determined that Ultra Magnus, as the commander of Autobot City, is a mayor https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Ultra_Magnus_(G1)
I don't think this episode was posted to the public feed. Which is a shame, because I think it would be a great intro episode.
Damn this episode got started quickly and with no weird digressions. Are you okay, girls?
THE CITY OF TOWNSVILLE!
He was my mayor… I’ve never been so apprehensive about listening to an episode.
Regarding the team thing. For federal and state elections people usually vote along party lines. At the local government level party affiliation isn’t as important and the campaign is usually based around affiliation with a locally known figure. These figures will usually have party affiliation but it doesn’t mean as much to voters in local elections as it does at the state and federal election level , voters are more familiar with state and federal policy positions but what a party candidate stands for in a local government context can vary quite a bit. The policies at the state and federal level don’t always map that well to the local government level. So for other local candidates it’s much more beneficial to say I’m on the mayoral candidates team as it gives voters a better idea of what policies they stand for than party affiliation would. As the elections are dominated by local issues. And the mayoral candidates campaign will layout their local policy objectives. Some federal and state parties have also adopted a personality centred approach. But I think Pauline hansons one nation recently dropped the Pauline Hanson part.
If your political party is called Team [Name] I should be allowed to depose you via Pokémon battle
As soon as the rate of concussions was mentioned, I started trying to construct a Concussions Georg joke so I'm glad we're on the same wavelength.
Zoldyck Mamdani is Killua's cousin running for Mayor of Yorknew city
Zohran knowing Nen would honestly explain a lot
Eyepro Solution is what I use to clean my work goggles
Riley! I don’t think there were Italians shooting at Australians at Gallipoli! They were on the same side yet also fighting on different fronts. Enjoyed everything else tho…
If Shinzo Abe getting taken down with the doohickey is the conceptually funniest successful assassination I think the teeny tiny van flip flop clad RPG wielding attempted assassination here may be the conceptually funniest unsuccessful one.
He truly was... wait what was he
45:43 Perth mentioned! He's sadly not been a mayor yet but Ahmed Zilani, a councillor from south of Perth in Mandurah, is spiritually a perfect fit for this podcast and I live in hope he finally wins a mayoral election so the Mayortaculas can finally shine its gaze on him
Perth mention wooooooo
I got the Glesgae young teams, fear not.
As someone from Queensland I have never been so excited and so nervous at the same time.
Police Israel? Fuck you, you're totally right but fuck you.
Queensland has the weirdest Timezone in Australia. When you cross the state border you have to set your watch 20 years back. Also this guy looks like every fucking cooker ex SAS (and claimed ex SAS) bogan-chud I’ve ever ever had the misfortune of encountering.
Update: Mattie is 100% correct they all fucking look like that
Townsville mentioned! I've been waiting for an episode on this guy since the pod started.
A Current Affair and its lesser cousin Today Tonight aren't really Australia 60 minutes, we have actual Australian 60 Minutes. Riley is right, they're right wing culture warriors who go harass people that right wing pensioners hate like people on welfare. If you ever see a clip from either of them it's almost certainly of them chasing someone from the front court house.
Ampatuan's family mass murdered over 30 journalists and 50 people in total in 2009, with our mayor here breaking ranks with his family and testifying against them. I feel like the attemped assassinations might have to do with that? Idk??
Damn double profiles in mayoral courage then
I'm going to set aside time this week to compose and record Fanfare for the Common Mayor for you gals, use it as you will
Just pressed play but id like to suggest that this Q in Q-Anon might stand for Queensland.
