Not surprising that you don't remember Squad Zero, I didn't know them when I watched this on release because I never rewatched OG until I started watching reaction channels. Squad Zero was mentioned in one maybe two lines of dialogue in the Pendulum Arc with Urahaha taking the place of Kirio, the captain that was talking to Shinji about Hiyori.

Kirio, the pink haired lady, was the captain of the 12th squad that got promoted during the Turn Back the Pendulum arc and was replaced by Urahara. Not ever stated in the anime/manga, Senjumaru, the lady with the arms, was head of a RnD group that existed long before Urahara started the current one. All of her underlings, Mayuri included, were all pretty unethical scientists, which is why when Senjumaru was brought into Squad Zero, Central 46 or whoever made the ultimate decision to lock the rest of them up in the Maggots Nest, where they remained until Urahara freed Mayuri to begin building the current RnD team. Most of the white coats in the current RnD team were Maggots nest prisoners from the old group.

Second time Byakuya and Ichigo met, Ichigo pulling up on the bridge to save Rukia, Ukitake was there and there was a dramatic zoom in from Ukitate seeing him for the first time. He asked Byakuya who Ichigo was, with Byakuya stating "He is no one at all". However we now know that Ukitate clearly saw the resemblance of Ichigo and Kaien Shiba, his former lieutenant. We now have proof Kubo Tite wrote his own story wrong, what is he, stupid? They're clearly related.

No one can enter the Soul King Palace without their assistance. There is a condition for entry into Squad Zero - only people who have fulfilled the condition in Soul Society with the approval of the Soul King can be assigned to this squad. The flag that they were waving features their squad flower, the daphne odora ("Winter Daphne", symbolises eternal life).

So basically Squad 0 are the greatest inventors……each member has created an invention that has fundamentally changed the soul society……..that in it of itself is the only requirement to become a member of squad 0

In OG bleach during the vizard backstory arc squad zero was actually hinted as the royal guards…….In the first episode of this arc it was mentioned that Kirio was the former captain of squad 12 and was promoted to serve at the royal palace as a squad 0 member……She was then later replaced by Kisuke Urahara to serve as her successor of squad 12
