You got your theories mixed up. Maomao's theory was that Jinshi is the son of the current Emperor and Ah-Duo, not Lihua, and that as an infant he was swapped with the previous emperor's second-born son who was born at the same time as Ah-Duo's son, meaning the current Emperor's son would grow up as the previous Emperor's son, an at the time higher standing than being the son of the Prince. Which would also then mean that the baby who died was the Empress Dowager's son, not the current Emperor's. She based this speculation partly on the fact that Jinshi and Ah-Duo look nearly identical. However she tossed that theory away, and the show has waffled between that theory, and the current understanding that Jinshi is the Emperor's younger brother not his son, though Jinshi stated here in Episode 7 that he once believed the current Emperor was his father. The story wants you to keep guessing.

Season 3 for more ways more on the heart. Wating for the funny times. And oh my gosh you are so wrong with Jinshi. But you will see at the end of the season maybe. Not all could make all the dots connecting.

the 10 years gap you keep talking about is a wrong translation, a typo or mixed context in the subtitles, the age gap between jinshi and the current Emperor is 16 years

Just a note for you guys: I think I remember one of the details you've mentioned a couple times that has you convinced that Jinshi is being called to "service" someone is when Maomao says that he does purification rituals regularly and you assumed that he had to purify himself before each visit. Just a reminder that detail was mentioned as part of her musing about the ceremonial tools that were sabotaged since people who perform the ceremonies would need to purify themselves beforehand. So while not impossible that Jinshi is visiting someone, weather the current emperor or someone else, given the context it's mentioned in I think it's more likely that was some fairly blatant foreshadowing that Jinshi was the target of that plot.

I love the fact that you guys were expecting the Emperor to be a horrible guy at episode 1 and know you like him

Dowager is the mother of the current emperor. This story has 2 separate empress dowagers. The previous emperors' mother was an empress dowager at the same time that the previous emperor also had an empress. When the previous emperor died and left behind his empress, she became an empress dowager when the current emperor came to power. if the current emperor was too young to lead then she would be the mother reagent and hold direct political control, but as an empress dowager she technically does not.

Hey Guys! Just some spoiler free information regarding the topic of empress and empress dowager. Empress dowager could also mean mother of the current emp or wife of the late emp. So in the flashback the old lady would be the empress dowager and jinshis mum would be the empress at the time. So the current emp and jinshi would be both prince in the flaschback. Back in the present jinshis brother is the current emp and jinshi is the brother of the current emp. Their mother ist at this time (because the former empress dowager - jinshis grandma - and Anshis husband died) the empress dowager. So the title changes as to who is alive at the time. At this moment there is no current empress because the emp has no male offsprings. Normally he would wed the consort who births him a male heir.

Jinshi is the current Emperor and Ah-Duo’s son who was swapped at birth with his Uncle. Jinshi’s uncle was accidentally killed as a baby by Fengming Ah-Duo’s head lady in waiting. Jinshi was raised as the current Emperor’s younger brother by his two grandmothers and Gaoshun, but as a child Jinshi instinctively recognised the Emperor as his father until he was lied to and told the current Emperor is his older brother not his father. Since then Jinshi has suspected he might have been switched at birth, but has no proof or evidence and so has written it off as just a fantasy. Maomao also realised Jinshi is really the Emperor’s son who was switched at birth, but immediately dismissed the idea for being too crazy. When Jinshi’s great grandmother the previous empress dowager found out about the switch she punished Luomen Maomao’s adoptive father by removing one of his kneecaps and banishing him from the palace. This also resulted in Lakan being sent away on a military deployment by his father and Maomao not being raised by her parents in a loving home

The emperor was 16 when Ah-duo got pregnant not 10, theres both an emperor and empress at the same time the empress just has less power, "dowager" gets added to the empress title when theyre widowed/have the current emperor.

27:33 Sooner or later Maomao is going to be confronted with undeniable proof that Jinshi is more than the eunuch tending the rear palace. And that revelation will be just as juicy as you could ask for.

Jinshi doesn't know about the swap so he thinks that Emperor is his brother. That why you guys could be a little bit confused about it
