Alan Wake 2 - Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (Review)
I found Alan Wake 2 insufferable. Having completed it and spent time thinking about the experience, I don't believe I'll ever understand what possessed Remedy to make a game that derails itself so frequently and moronically. CLICK HERE to read my review.

kind of surprising you didn't like it when it reminds me SO MUCH of Deadly Premonition, and has a lot of it's janky charm. Not to say I disagree with a lot of steph's complaints, those things simply didn't bother me. Granted, I'm also still pretty early on, so maybe things will change. My only real complaints are the aforementioned linearity when adding evidence to the board, and profiling being dumb, though I get the impression that will get a non stupid explanation at some point.
I’ve never played the first one and am not that interested in this one. I’m not gonna lie - it’s always fun to read Steph write something scathing and it is a nice counter to the fawning praise I read in the other review of this I’ve read. Great read!
Oof, that's a pretty scathing review. I'll still play the game eventually, but maybe I'll catch it on sale...
While I hesitate to critique a piece of media I haven't experienced I do know a good mystery will often give you just enough info to make you feel like a clever clogs if you figure it out before the protagonist, but if you then had to do homework to catch the protagonist up? That sounds really irritating.
It's not a lake. It's an ocean... Of background lore.
My exposure to Remedy was with the first two Max Payne games and the original Alan Wake. Three games I hold dear to me to this day. That said, I own a shit laptop (it still has a disk drive) and the game is nearly a third of my paycheck so even before I read your review...no.
My favorite game of the year, and a lot of the stuff complained about in the review is the stuff that worked best for me. Remedy seems like they are leaning in to the stuff they want to do and how they want to do it, and that's obviously not going to be to everyone's taste, but I appreciate the big swings they're taking, even if it sounds like it didn't connect with you.
yeah, I'm about halfway through and I can see why it's divisive, a lot of the things I really love about it are things I could see others finding profoundly obnoxious, which is fair.
I recently played through AW1 with my wife for Halloween. About halfway through the intro she said to me that Alan's cadence reminded her of Patrick Bateman. She also spent a good chunk of the story convinced Alan was having a psychotic break and was actually massacring the townsfolk. After that it was impossible to take him seriously. Every time the combat kicked up 'It's Hip to Be Square' started playing in my head. I don't think that it will help things in AW2 now that Alan looks like he's morphing into Jake Gyllenhaal.
Went to see Incarcerat over the weekend and now I would love nothing more than to play a video game based on the works of Garth Marenghi.. but made intentionally of course.
By associating it with Garth Marenghi's Darkplace you've elevated it much higher than it sounds like it deserves (eventhoughthatterfycuntGlinnerwasinacoupleofepisodesbutthiswasBEFOREHELOSTHISGODDAMNMINDandwejustignorethatanyway)
Well, this is different. I loved this game even more than the original. Everything you complained about here was something that I loved. Well, not everyone has to like the same thing. Wait wait, something something Metacritic review bombing. That’s totally what’s happening here./s
