The Game Reviewer Who Hates Games (The Jimquisition)

While I've often joked about hating videogames, there are many who claim my feelings are all too sincere, and those claims have increased since I returned to writing game reviews. Of course, I love many games, but here's the rub - the ones I love are the wrong videogames.

Inspired by an amusing interaction I had in the wake of my Dead Island 2 review, I got to thinking about what is really meant when a critic is accused of hating the very medium they criticize. It's led to some interesting new perspectives on people who complain about game reviews.

The commenter clearly didn't intend to do anything but get a reaction out. They don't care, I'd bet. It's good to have a voice of sanity and we like your reviews and support you for doing them! All mainstream reviews from companies are useless. User (audience) reviews are best imo for movies and games, but there is no guarantees you'll enjoy it even if positive reviews.

Just to add a label and some follow-up reading to the phenomenon you're describing, it sounds a lot like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostile_media_effect (which is a consequence of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Na%C3%AFve_realism_(psychology))

This is fascinating, I hadn't come across these terms before - thanks for sharing! :D

Putting the main content/theme aside for a moment, I have not laughed out loud so much at a Jimquisition in a long time. I'm on board with most everyone else here regarding the main topic, but the intro, outtro, and general comedy were brilliant.

ExtraPunctuation and ColdTake both tackled this topic lately. I just love the cognitive dissonance needed to earnestly believe that someone can hate something and then make engaging with that thing their *livelihood*. I can't stand doing things I hate for a day, let alone for a career. I'm reminded of this scene from Ratatouille also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrT_am3rVzM.

Not having watched this video yet, the title reminded me of a different creator: https://www.patreon.com/rahdo Similarly, but conversely he has always been criticized for never disliking anything. And obviously, as is the case for you, actually taking in the content tells a different story. It requires taking in the content though, so... So many affirmation machines amongst the internet population - people see what they want to see. Anything else takes actual effort. It's so very easy for us to be on the interwebs in low-energy mode.

I always enjoyed your reviews, and it's genuinely refreshing to have a critic around who is unafraid to tell their unfiltered opinion. I often disagree with it - but just as often, I don't, and it's always helpful. I am, for example, glad that there's a critic out there who dares to say that *gasp* maybe the weapon durability system in BotW WASN'T the best idea since sliced bread, but rather a bit annoying and immersion breaking (I always felt like it was unsurprising that the Hyruleans lost the war if they made all their weapons out of glass). On another note: I always noticed that there's a bit of overlap between the "all video games are art" and the "video game analysis should be objective" crowds, and that's always been the weirdest thing to me - seemingly believing that objective criticism of art is even possible. It shows that it really is all about self-validation for some.

Always love your reviews due to your objective view, ability to actually write well, and the fact you’re not paid by the publishers of the games to speak! Ignore the comments of those social media hive mind mouthpieces and keep being amazing!

What continues to baffle is that game reviewers have been, and forever always *should be* biased. The trick is figuring out their biases and going 'if they like it, I'd like it' or even 'if they hate it, I'd like it' or not. Surely this isn't a complex concept? Anyone?

This was a good one. I glad you’re able to see beyond the weak arguments they make and recognize the insecurities behind it all. I hope making this video helped put them behind you. I for one always appreciate your game reviews. Even when we have different taste your reviews help me decide if I’ll enjoy a game even if you don’t.

I intentionally seek out middling reviews. 7/10 = 10/10 while 10/10 = 0/10. Pretty soon the machine will catch on to my strategy and start assigning random numbers for their AI written reviews.

I don't look for reviewers I agree with, I look for ones I respect because they aren't just a part of the consumer machine trying to get me to buy more things. I don't always agree with your opinions, but I know you're telling me how you experienced the game and you aren't influenced by potential swag or corporate retreats on EA's dime. And it's not like the things you say aren't in the game. It's just that the things that bothered you don't bother me, which is something I can easily tell by reading your thorough review. A review that highlights all the good, the bad and the ugly with a game helps me make an informed choice. That's the job. The job isn't to obfuscate the experience just in case a reader likes the game and is too delicate to hear that others don't. Reviewers aren't dictators. Readers can choose to ignore the opinions they don't agree with. Unless these people are fully under your sway. Perhaps you have minions you don't know about, completely in your thrall and they can't choose for themselves. They fight against your influence, but resistance is futile. I notice you didn't entertain this theory. I think it's time for an investigation into the consequences of "Sterling syndrome" - it comes about when a presence is so awe-inspiring, that you must obey all their commands or forever burn in the agony of defying a great one, even, nay, especially when you disagree with them on Breath of the Wild.

I enjoyed Dead Island 2, but I also agree with your general take (though I often feel a bit different in points which is to be expected). The thing I like about your reviews is they give me a sense if I would like or dislike a game usually, because you don't just give a rating but reasons why and focus on how it FEELS to play.

Keep doing what you're doing. I appreciate the honest reviews because time and money are limited.

The "you have to like this thing" part of geek / nerd culture is, like everything else to do with the fanbase, FUCKING EXHAUSTING. I have had many people who were "friends" who insist that I have to like Marvel/DC specifically or movies in general and I just... don't. I am not interested in what these groups create, but for some reason people think I have to. Not "I have to" like "it's a fact that you like this", but rather "you're obligated to like this". They'll phrase it in the most innocuous way possible, like "we just want to make references that you understand" when, in reality, it's clear they just want their tastes validated, their *identities* validated. I got the strong impression that our "friendship" was predicated on this. They're no longer friends, in case you were wondering.

I once was at a birthday party where there were quite a few "geeks", and made the mistake of saying that I did not enjoy the Deadpool movie and felt it was rather generic for a superhero movie, just with some more "penis dick haha" jokes, more gore and some meta-humor (that was playing it REALLY safe). This one dude just would not let me alone after that. I talked to the guy for about 10 minutes until I said: "Well, let's agree to disagree then". The "conversation" lasted for another two hours, because the guy just would not stop telling me how I was objectively wrong and the movie was super original, unique and funny and he just didn't understand how I "could not see that". It was genuinely exhausting. I really don't get why people would tie their self-worth to something as dumb as a superhero movie or a video game franchise and feel personally attacked when someone doesn't agree with them.

I personally really like your reviews. The way you talk about a game really lets me judge if i would like it myself, whether or not you did. And isn't that the sign of a good review?
