How YouTube Coerced Its Way Into Rewriting Our Language

A look at how YouTube is abusing its creators with financial threats to create a chilling effect that controls the very foundation of how we speak. This video's been a long time coming.

(Note: subtitles will be late this week due to Laura being away and me getting external help. They'll be up ASAP)

Hi Stephanie, I subbed after seeing this anti YouTube piece, which articulates much I feel about it. I’m a fellow exile, a trans woman and just regular consumer who apparently breached some unknown boundary arguing with transphobes after the UK Supreme Court Rowling fiasco in the comments sections of a few creators I followed. (No threats, or bad language. Just a lot of commenting, because I was quite triggered at the time.) Ironically, I had been paying Premium for an ad free YouTube experience, but with no warning or explanation I’ve been permanently kicked from the platform, I can no longer log into it at all, the auto message stating it was because it thought I was a spambot, or posting malicious content. Tried appealing, rejected in 45 seconds by the algorithm and… that’s it. I can never watch YouTube legitimately again. I have found a way, and it is currently ad free, so their loss I guess. But if there was a viable alternative to YouTube, I’d be there in a heartbeat. In the meantime, there’s Patreon, I guess…

Proud to support someone who will actively resist YouTube's censorship.

youtube has what louis rossman would call a "rapist mentality" they constantly change the deal without your consent they force you to do what they want they are rapists.

I, for one, look forward to a resurgence of "Chains of Love." And I'm glad your back seems to be doing better this week. :)

Hey Steph, have you considered joining Nebula? It started being all engineers and shit but there's a few culture creators there now like Jessie Gender

God we've really got to nationalised YouTube. Get em run as an international NGO or just give them to Wikimedia. The current management are a collection of cunts

I can’t really say anything about the subject matter because you’ve already said it so eloquently, and if I did try to add to the discussion, I’d just fall asleep depressed. Instead, I want to thank you from the bottom of my cis, straight, white male heart. I’ve been binging the *entire* Jimquisition playlist these past days (I’m around 2016) and something is becoming clearer to me by the day: it was you all along. You were one of the most important voices in my development as a teenager, despite the occasional problematic talking points, or (very early) ableist language. You were the main gateway drug for me accepting more diverse opinions and gender identities and (very importantly) hating corpos with a strategic passion. Now I watch Natalie, Abigail, Hbomb, Folding Ideas, FD, and the others, but without your initial influence, I probably would’ve had a different (or at least a heavily delayed) development as a person. I’m turning 30 this year, and I can still remember I was there when you made Yahtzee take a mouthful of mustard, when you flopped that huge Saints Row “sword” around, and when you started to crack the last of my “skepticism” regarding gender identities, more to the point transgender people. So thank you immeasurably. I will continue to support you on Patreon, and I can’t wait to see what you grace us with during your (incredibly well deserved) break from this show, and also when you come back to it in your own time. I’ve always loved your work, and I’ll continue to do so for as long as I’m able. Thank God for you, Steph ❤❤❤

Glad you're talking about this. I'm so sick of Youtube censoring things that should be perfectly normal to talk about while allowing morons to spout massive amounts of misinformation. Their solution? Just putting a little warning banner below the video. Absolutely insane that it's okay to promote genocide but how dare you talk about mental health!

Watching this video, was thinking to myself was I'm going to miss Manzilla's editing (especially with that A+ use of Starship Troopers) but you had to pull the rug out. Three cheers to Dan on the great job on today's video and three cheers again to Manzilla for setting a great editing style. Will miss these Monday rendezvous but hopefully you all be back more refreshed, and even if not, it will be good to have you back anyway. So long and thanks for the fish, I mean lobsters.

I'm editing the script for an upcoming dark fantasy game, and i'm having to go through the entire 250,000+ word script removing anything that might get it flagged as "inappropriate" on Steam. This game has ZERO content which would even remotely count as illegal (it does have a lot of sexual content), but that doesn't matter, because no human at Steam is going to look at it. It's going to be put through an AI algorithm, and it'll be approved or rejected based on that. The project manager put a sample through ChatGPT, and even words like "stableboy" were flagged as being potentially objectionable. I'm having to come up with a script designed to appeal to AI first and foremost, not an actual audience, and that's awful.

yikes - can you convince the people you are working with to just not give a damn and accept the "inappropriate" label? or to at least offer a patch that restores the original writing?

"Grape" / "Graped" seems to be the most common alternative to that particular act at the moment. It's still ridiculous! Anyway, I hope the break does you good. I know you've got a lot on the go and after a streak that would shame The Undertaker, I'd say you'd earned a rest!

I heard the opening line "Automated bots" as "automated butts", after the talk about specific terminology. That is all, accents make for lots of fun sometimes.
