A Video About Friendly Fire(break)

Friendly fire. Some people defend it. I bloody despise it. Let's talk about that, especially with FBC: Firebreak demonstrating some of the worst ways you can possibly implement the bloody mechanic.

Friendly fire isn’t very friendly, you know!

I have only played a couple of games in multiplayer, and very recently. I gather this is not about singleplayer games, in which I find friendly fire adds a lot. Remembering when I played Swat3 (sp) I feel not having friendly fire would undermine the methodical gameplay. But when I was told Vermintide in higher dificulty levels has friendly fire I immediately decided I won't ever try those even with trusted friends, seems a pain for no good reason. All of what you've shown in the video looks like vermintide to me in that regard so I guess I agree within that genre. Btw, about a break in episodes I just want to say, you are such a part of my monday routine for so long it's going to feel a bit weird, but I'm amazed and a little scared you haven't done it before, and very happy you are moving on to other things that you seem to be enjoying a lot. I wish you the best with everything you get up to and thank god for you.

heh yeah i was essentially going to comment the same thing - there are games where careful application of violence is a big part of what makes the game and being able to wildly spray fire at people would ruin it and yeah vermintide gets... awful when you hit friendly fire - if they really want it as part of difficulty options (for when people really want it as an extra challenge for extra reward) then make the difficulty options nice and granular... plenty games have had that in the past: enemy health +50%? get 10% more loot... friendly fire on? get 50% more loot ... fewer extra lives? well you get the idea it kinda works for something like left 4 dead, because their weapons generally are relatively precise, because they are guns... mix it with predominantly wide area magic and large melee weapons? yeah people die like flies it also works nicely with something like helldivers - for the most part (screw the lightning nonsense) - because you fight in wide areas and dont generally run through each others lines of fire...the main thing causing friendly fire is the stuff you should be coordinating about... air strikes and other large scale weapons... after all.. you want to watch the obliteration of the nest...not be in the middle of it... also it adds to the theme... the divers are inherently dispensable - losing a couple is inconsequential and the next one is in the fight immediatly i think thats kind of the point - if you have friendly fire in... there should be a good reason for it (like most mechanics) - does it reinforce your theme? does it foster player behaviour you want to encourage? is it necessary for the core gameplay?
