It's looking like an $80 base price for mainstream games is inevitable, and companies are readying the propaganda machine to justify it. One CEO, however, was accidentally honest about the whole thing when he said "real fans" would find a way to afford it.
Your fandom is a license to exploit you to your detriment.

Ugh the Randy hair really gives him an Oscar Wilde air that he does not deserve! I actually experienced this very recently. For the last 8 years I have only owned a Switch on purpose (before that a Wii U, and Wii before that,) it was nice in some ways and forced me to try different things between the Nintendo games I bought the console for. Nintendo it seemed to me was the only major publisher concerned with creating games that were just fun, and were profiting for it Then that last Switch 1 direct aired, and it was mostly devoid of anything I cared about. “No big deal” I said to myself, “makes sense that they are saving the goods for the Switch 2 direct!” The Switch 2 Direct was kinda shit. There are a few kinda cool things in there but nothing that I cared about per se. I liked the upgrades (until they revealed the price.) I liked DK alright (until the revealed the $70 budget-price??) Overall the showcase was a confusing mess of games I didn’t care about for a price I knew I couldn’t swing! Cyberpunk and Yakuza 0 always looked neat on consoles I didn’t own - but also were significantly cheaper and run better there too! I don’t need to go through all of this, but it did reframe the Switch 1 direct, and frankly the last 4-5 years. I don’t like most Nintendo games like I used to, and they seem disinterested in making their titles I would want to play. The Switch 2 felt like they were trying to use my fandom to buy a product I didn’t want. I think this video is important for giving the language to this phenomenon and I genuinely appreciate you for making it. I’m tired of being dicked around by companies for this kind of shit. -Epilogue- I opted instead to buy a Series X. I’m not going to become a fan girl elsewhere, but it’s incredibly cheap to collect interesting games from the last 25 years in one place. The only New game I bought has been Clair Obscur and I’m having a blast!! 🥰🥰

I expect they also will be including microtransaction in an already overpriced game. So it’s even easier to spend $100+.
