Nintendo's $80 Games Give Greed A Green Light
I know I'll catch heat for refusing to let Nintendo off the hook for this one, but I am not accepting tariffs as an excuse for normalizing a price hike that publishers have literally been looking forward to. In fact, that very excuse is WHY I am so disgusted at the permission Nintendo just gave this vulturine industry.

True
I remember the halcyon days of games on the Nintendo and super Nintendo being $50 which was reasonable and affordable. Those days are long gone 馃檨
Am I interested in GTA6? Oh, yes! Will I buy it at launch if it costs $100? Will I bollocks!
In the 19th century Marx described the horrors of capitalism using English linen producers as examples. In the 21st century, Sterling describes the horrors of capitalism using the gaming industry. You鈥檙e in good company
I think tariffs are a bad excuse given the uncertainty around the world, but I can't get over the feeling that in terms of hours involved in production, inflation alone justifies things. I paid $45-50 for Sonic 2 on the Genesis when it came out. $80 is more than reasonable just on that basis alone, and we can't expect the games industry to continue squeezing efficiency blood out of stones here without continued worsening of the adverse byproducts of that we've already seen.
So I've been reading Das Capital recently, and it's so funny how often I read things in there and think "Hey, that sounds like something Stephanie would say". I'm sure she's read it, but in an industry built entirely around the exploitation of it's labourers for the soul purpose of lining their pockets, it's no surprise that they'll come to the same conclusions as Marx
I wanted a Switch because it was a good handheld for portable gaming. Well, the Steam Deck exists now and it does everything the Switch does, but better and cheaper (including playing Switch games, I'm told). So I think I'll pass on the Switch 2 and go back to playing Metaphor.
I like your take. Everyone on both sides is going crazy. I just wish Nintendo did $70 for all their games and said "it's because games are expensive and we don't like micro transactions" in our console games. I'm sure they view MKW as TotK level but they didn't communicate that so I'm assuming. And that's probs my fanboy bias. But everyone saying the cost of living crisis is here and are getting priced out is right
Haven't watched the video yet, but I can already say you are correct to criticise Nintendo for this. It's ridiculous and you shouldn't get heat for saying something objectively correct.
Nice tome!
I'll say this, the places I frequent were like "Ok, the Switch itself seems a... fine price, but that games price is bad and it's made me think that I'll skip this one. If people go with it, it tells other game makers they can also jack up prices." So not just you. This is objectively correct.
