How Long Does It Take To Make A Video Game?

This video really should have been titled, "Why is Yandere Simulator taking so long to be developed?" because that's the question that it seeks to answer.

In short, this video is something of a rebuttal to the people who claim that Yandere Simulator is being developed slowly. I start out by explaining that ambitious game projects made by small teams usually take around 4~5 years to be developed, and Yandere Simulator is an especially ambitious project, so its development speed isn't unexpected.

I also explain that there are a number of factors slowing me down at this point in time. I really don't like bringing up such negative topics, but I felt like it was necessary to broach the subject in the hopes that people can be a little more understanding.

I'm sure it's been said but please don't get down about people calling you names. Silly I know, but keep it up, can't wait to see what's next :)

You realize who your true supporters are once weather turns stormy. Don't listen to those who are incapable of doing the simplest thing in the world to do - waiting.

For what it's worth, I think you're doing an amazing job!^_^ I've been following this for years now, and I am amazed at what you've accomplished and how far it's come along! It's been really fun to be able to play around with it as it is made, and I think it's wonderful that you've shared the game with us as it's being made. Of course, I'm very excited to see how it will turn out when it's finished, but I think if you rushed to complete it faster, the final product would suffer for it. I would much rather wait a lot longer and be able to experience your full vision for the game, than have it rushed out sooner. I think most of the community honestly feels that way. As it tends to happn, the loudest ones are the few that blithely wail on without stopping to think about what they are really saying. So, I hope that you can move forward knowing that your fans support you! We are so impressed with all that you've done!^_^

I don't care what the other morons are saying, someone who've been working 5 years straight on a single game practically alone can't be called lazy, nor can be said to have been doing that only for the money. Good continuation with this fun project Yandere dev, you're a great guy.

I looked at some of the videos of your detractors--and their arguments are very weak. They complained that you used a grass asset that someone else made, even though you removed it when the creator asked you to remove it. That was one of his MAIN arguments. "He stole a grass texture, SOMEBODY STOP THIS INCOMPETENT MADMAN!" I mean really, give me a break. Keep up the good work. These guys against you are utter morons who hate you because you've acheived success in what you do, and they haven't. They don't want to admit that their ideas or skills were inadequate to do what you can, and so they have to find every minute fault and exacerbate it. My advice, Don't turn off the comments again. I see that you did acknowledged that mistake. I'm glad for that. But also, don't address these guys too much. They only think it means they're right.

I may sound a little selfish here but I do think that the only people that you have any obligation to are us here. It may actually be a benefit if the hype goes down for a while since it reduces the pressure on you. I'm sorry to hear that the deal with TinyBuild didn't work out, but really, if you think that the code needs refactoring to make it more maintainable then I think you should go for it even if it means no new features for several months. You can just write a post every once in a while to let people know that you're still working on the game. I think that'll be enough for most patrons. I work for a major software firm (not gaming, though I'd love to do it one day, I have no clue how to begin though...) and every once in a while we stop adding features for a while and just work on cleaning up the code. Do whatever you believe is best. As you implement more features it may actually hinder any refactoring attempts in the future. With that being said I do think that as you implement most of the game mechanics the game may already be 75% complete by the time you reach KickStarter.

I think the best moment to refactor the code would be between having all the features implemented and the development of the rivals. That would also coincide with the moment the Kickstarter may begin. And I absolutely agree on your opening statement. We here are the ones who are financing the development of a game we want to see finished. Whatever haters say elsewhere is of secondary consideration.

As usual, your arguments are sound and logical. I appreciate that greatly, and it ensures my continued support. I find it impressive that in the face of hate and anger towards you that you are able to keep yourself collected and offer a sound response. Keep up the good work.

Ok, you got me, I fell for this trap and started to give you at least a bit of money. I've been following you on youtube since day 1 and from time to time I watch one of your video to see how it's going. I'm always amazed by the progress you make, the feature you implement, the complexity, and dedication you have in this project. But I'm far from rich (My salary is below 30k per year) So I didn't join the patreon before. Still, I wanted you to know that hater gotta hate and that you dont have to listen to them (Ok you probably already know that but still...). Most of them are either too young or ignorant of what it is to "create a game" to understand. They just want you game to be release and are getting impatient but it's normal since you have this unique game creating technique where you put on youtube each step of your game creation since the very beggining when the game was a shadow of what it is now. Well I write too much so to sumarize, You rock, I like your voice, I like your work, I like the idea behind your game, and I will follow you until the end. (I just hope you doesn't get hit by a car or get killed by a Yandere fan-girl before you finish your game). So yeah, even in Québec some people support you. Hang in there dude.

Been following the game for years now. I'm excited to see everything you post. I'm not stressed about however long it takes. I love the idea to death, and I haven't downloaded the sandboxes at all. I think a majority of us are the silent watchers. We keep an eye on your videos and just keep waiting. I want you to know we all appreciate you and look forward to buying the final product.

The amount of free time I have really hasn't changed over the past year. The point of this video isn't to say that I'm going to be working less, or anything like that. It's just to explain that, even if I fully dedicate myself to the game, progress can still be slow because of fatigue and other issues.

I honestly dont get whats with all the hate lately or what happened but ill be here for you like i always am. Not usually a patreon but ive ben there for you before

I only played the game in early alpha, I will not play it now until it comes out at some point I may stop watching the video's but the core stuff is fine to know but not about the rivals.

You are putting in so much into this game and have even (in my mind) created a completely new and original concept for game development by allowing us all to be a part of the process (MMORG game developing, lol 😉). This is an incredible thing to be part of in any way and I'm enjoying this journey though my regret is all the hard work, blood, sweat and tears you are putting into this. We have all the time in the world. Thank you for making this so fun and my thanks to my fellow patrons whose comments make me smile x

I have never played Yandere Simulator. Ever. I seen the game and I am a patron for seeing it's finished. I knew for the most part that it will not be done in a year or even two of my investment. I also knew I would not play it until it is done. I am still firm in that stance. I am paying Yandere Dev, Money out of my own pocket, for a game that has not been completed and will not pay for years ahead. And that's fine. I want the game done, but I am a patient person. Others are not and want this game in some way, so do I. I want Osana to come out and see a full demo. Yet if it takes a long time. then I wait.

tehmario · June 9, 2018

Hey YandereDev as a gamer I knew I was in it for the long haul. I share the sentiments of this video greatly. When I had first seen and played a test build of the game I knew I needed to uninstall this and simply.. wait. I've been wanting to write you something for a long time, perhaps you'll see it here. Just wanting to thank you for all the years of hard work and dedication that should be plainly obvious. You know people that are satisfied with the state of something often say nothing at all. Those who are not satisfied will often relish in expressing it as much as possible, which can lead to a perception that more are dissatisfied than not. Just a thought. You may have considered that before. Anyway just let it be known that money talks more than bullshit does and you have my continued support for as long as the game is being developed. When the kickstarter is launched I will be contributing as much as I can on that day. Wishing all the success for the game and yourself as well and thank you again. The pateron sub is worth it alone for your video content and your story of being a game dev.

I get so frustrated at groups and fandoms that flood creators, actors, what have you, with hate. All it does is create a toxic environment, and if you truly are a fan you wouldn't be so quick to scrutinize every little detail. There is always things in the background that we don't see or hear about, sometimes things don't go as planned and that's okay. Artist are still humans, and just like the rest of us, we all have highs and lows.
