Hot Topics Live recap: Let's talk algorithms
Hot Topics is a live conversation series focusing on the spiciest topics creators face today.
Patreon CEO Jack Conte recently sat down with creators Karen X Cheng and Tiffany Tan for a live audio conversation about discovery algorithms, right here on Patreon for Creators. They covered how algorithms impact creators’ art, communities, and businesses, and how they can be improved to help creators not just reach more fans, but build stronger connections. Listen to the recording here, and catch the transcript below.

Hi Nickolas I’m here hearing you
I 🤔💭 I was already added to my CREOLE COUGER ACCOUNT
thank you so much for this wonderful interview, I am so glad I have made the move to Patreon. This conversation echoes everything I care about. My only input at the moment is Live streaming could really use improved camera controls. There is no ability to zoom in close and for me that is very important. So far the people who have followed me over from other social media platforms are loving the format, but definitely missing the ability to see things clearly close up.
Thanks Sophia, we're glad you enjoyed this conversation and appreciate your feedback on Patreon Live. For more camera controls and custom video settings, you can broadcast on Live through streaming software like OBS, Zoom and others. For more information on how to set that up, check out this article: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/29638941178893-Live-Set-Up-and-Overview#h_01KFXGRPMT27T3MJG9XYCZRPJQ
Need better functionality for people to cast Patreon to their TV, or even better, a dedicated Patreon TV app
Here's to 2026 🥂
Yup
I recently started Patreon. Today I got an email from them and came across this place for the first time, and when I read someone describe it as 'like screaming into Tiffany’s void,' it hit me in a chillingly familiar way. That is exactly how I feel.
Hi
What's the difference between this and the other patreon channel

This might be off topic though I think it may tie into this otherwise but please, don't use AI or "autopilot" stuff on this site or you will lose many members who do NOT want such shit "running" their pages on here. Too many sites are pushing this shit and forcing creators who do not want to use such to leave these sites. I know that I feel very pressured to leave when sites start to use algorithms, AI and "auto" types of stuff and seriously push it on their members who don't want it. It might help many creators but it also hurts many creators who prefer to do things manually or "old school".
Bravo , You will like a post I will put up over the weekend . It throws a big wrench into the “WOW” affect of AI. I argued the case for traditional values versus slick features ….
My number one request is for Patreon to work harder at marketing the service so more members join the service.
Here's ChatGPT's 500 word summary for busy creators (thanks for this Jack, Karen, Tiffany, btw, very interesting points, and encouraging that the problem is recognized on Patreon): In a recent live audio event on Patreon, CEO Jack Conte sat down with creators Karen X Cheng and Tiffany Tan to discuss the growing influence of discovery algorithms on creative work and community building. This conversation, part of Patreon's "Hot Topics" series, touched on how algorithms shape creators' reach, business models, and emotional relationships with their audiences — and how platforms like Patreon might do better. Conte kicked off the conversation with a critique of how platforms like TikTok and Instagram have deprioritized the follower model in favor of algorithm-driven “For You” feeds. While TikTok’s innovation is often credited to vertical-first video, Conte argued its real disruptive move was replacing direct creator-fan relationships with attention-optimizing algorithms. Other platforms copied the model, creating a digital landscape where creators struggle to reach even a small percentage of their followers. Both Karen and Tiffany echoed this frustration. Karen described the sense of futility after putting great effort into her content, only to have it go unseen. Tiffany noted that what began as a way to connect and share her art has begun to feel like “screaming into a void.” Both creators also acknowledged how these shifts pressure them to create content optimized for reach — often at the expense of authenticity and artistic fulfillment. The panelists criticized how the system rewards clickbait and short-form content, pushing creators to focus on thumbnails, hooks, and algorithm tricks. Karen pointed out how Instagram once fostered community and discovery through genuine interactions but now floods feeds with unwanted suggestions. Tiffany admitted that even her editing style has changed — becoming faster and choppier — due to the pressure of adapting to short-form platforms like Reels and TikTok. Yet amid frustration, there was hope. All three speakers believe the internet doesn’t have to be this way. They cited signs of change: growing public awareness of digital addiction, platform fatigue, and the emergence of decentralized or protocol-based social networks like Bluesky and Mastodon. Karen compared the growing resistance to algorithmic manipulation to the societal reckoning with cigarettes: awareness precedes reform. The group also discussed the future of Patreon. Many creators, especially newer ones, struggle with discoverability if they aren’t already big on other platforms. Conte acknowledged this gap and said it’s a priority for the company. He promised that Patreon would build transparent, human-centered algorithms to help creators connect with like-minded audiences — without forcing them to compromise their work. Both Karen and Tiffany offered suggestions like interest-based categories, better browsing tools, and discovery through shared values or aesthetics rather than pure engagement metrics. Karen also emphasized the need for systems that support multidisciplinary creators, not just those who niche down. She described her strategy of “creative through-lines” to maintain coherence while changing interests. Tiffany, more niche-focused, said long-form storytelling still allows her to weave in experimentation organically. Ultimately, the conversation painted a picture of creators tired of chasing algorithms and yearning for meaningful connection. Patreon hopes to be part of the solution, fostering tools that allow creativity to flourish on its own terms — not just the algorithm’s.
Why can I not get any of you to respond to my request for refund, as someone has taken $29.98 out of my account and it was not authorized, I did not receive any kind of notice and my money is gone ! I subscribe to FleeceKing patreon and nothing else, and that is only $20.00 a month, and for some reason I’m not on it now, as someone has taken my money and I can’t get a refund or pay for my subscription to rejoin FleeceKing. So my question is can you being the CEO of patreon fix this problem or is it a no with you too ! Please I just need someone to help me with this problem, I’ve tried contacting everyone and I’m just getting the run around from you all ! I just want my money back, and my subscription to FleeceKing patreon back please can you please help me with this
One thing when I hear creators talk or at conferences... majority seem frustrated. Hopefully things get better. Number one I think you should at least get to reach your own audience. Since everything turns into an advertising platform the incentive isn't there, but creators deserve better.
Fully agreeing with you.. We creators are increasingly frustrated because even if we create very good content we still can't seem to reach our audience as we should and most importantly turn it into paid memberships. Patreon should work better towards making that possible for us with more "hooking" tools.
How the Live Audio feature is gonna work exactly and when will it be available to everyone? Asking for myself. I might wanna try it out asap.
