Taival Mechanics #10: NPC Reactions & Immersion

Hey adventurers!

One of our main goals in Taival is to create a world that doesn’t just exist for the player—but one that feels alive on its own. We already talked about NPCs having schedules and them being simulated in our previous post, Taival Mechanics #9: NPC Schedules & Simulation, but there’s more to making the world immersive and feel alive: NPC reactions.

To make interactions feel more organic, we're working on a system where NPCs react to environment, player, and each other in meaningful ways. These reactions come in two forms: passive and active.

Passive reactions allow NPCs to adapt to the world naturally without interrupting their current activities. Instead of standing around or just walking aimlessly down the road, NPCs will react to their surroundings in ways that feel believable. If it starts raining, villagers might pull up their hoods or seek shelter. When night falls, travelers might light torches or sit by a campfire to warm up. These kinds of small details make it feel like the world continues to exist even when you’re not directly interacting with it.

Active reactions on the other hand, are something that interrupt NPCs' current activities. When you walk past a friendly villager, they might wave and greet you, maybe even stop for a quick chat on your adventure. A merchant could call out to advertise their goods, while a guard might demand you to sheathe your weapon if you end up running around the town swinging your sword! These active reactions can also be from actions not made by players. For example, two NPCs stopping to discuss something that happened in the world recently. These small moments help the world feel responsive and dynamic.

These NPC reactions don’t just make Taival more immersive—they help you feel like a part of the world. This means that some reactions require local information and some reactions require global information. The weather changing and player completing quests are good examples of global events that trigger certain reactions, while player coming close to an NPC is a good example of a reaction to local information.

These reactions (along all the simulation, combat, idling, talking, etc.) are run in our NPC behaviour trees, which is a whole post (or many posts even) in it's own! Stay tuned to that.😉

We’d love to hear your thoughts! What kinds of NPC reactions would you like to see in Taival? Let us know in the comments!

And as a disclaimer, we are currently working on implementing these so there is no more footage yet to share. We'll keep you updated as we implement new reactions!

As always, thank you for your support, and we can’t wait to share more with you soon!
