UPDATED: Well, I guess it's time to talk about engines

Yep! The second (but also kind of the first) video on engine management is now complete and here it is for youuuu!

UPDATED YT Link! I added an explanatory section about the bearings and my terminology shenanigans. Captions are in place but they still need polishing. They'll get progressively better as time goes on but now I need to figure out a thumbnail while I'm still at the office.

YT Link: https://youtu.be/mmCfOazZCNQ

So, as you might have been able to tell, this took me a while. Pronounce while like "hwhile" for maximum effect. Some of that was that the last two weeks I've been really struggling to keep myself on track but the larger part is just... I bit off a lot here! There are many directions to take this and honestly for a couple of months I've been waffling on whether I even wanted to make this video. But I figured if I'm going to create some sort of comprehensive resource on engine management, might as well start with the basics.

For those who were able to see the behind-the-scenes video, I elected not to pursue a cutaway of the engine. I ultimately decided it wouldn't add much compared to simply looking at all the parts and it would limit the directions I could take this.

I ended up having to fix several errors (both a fact check and a technical issue) otherwise I would have had this uploaded much earlier today. I will be delaying captions until tomorrow.

Oh also, small thing but the credits are different between the Patreon render and the YT render. The YT render has the more updated list. Not worth explaining why that happened but let's just say email troubles.

kay bye

If you change your own oil, go ahead and splurge on a quick valve. I'll recommend Fumoto. They're not crazy expensive, and they save you from having to replace the crush washer. They also save you the mess of the oil stream covering the drain plug, your hand, and the floor if you miss the catch pan. The only drawback is that they drain slower than an empty drain hole, but you really make that time back by not having to unscrew and screw the plug and change the crush washer.

EVs are an obvious exception to the "no replacement for displacement" rule. In fact, EVs just plain do better at everything that more displacement does. The saying should really be "forced induction is not a replacement for displacement", but that's not as catchy.

I loved this video. If you ever want to do a deeper dive in to older engine's. I am care taker to a 106 year old tractor in Maryland

There is shockingly little content that bridges the gap between subject except and someone who knows a little bit about a topic, this channel is one of those few places and you do fantastic job at bridging that gap Alex

Great jokes in this one 😄

Very well done. As always, your delivery style keeps it entertaining. This is a great overview for folks who don't have any experience with engine operations, health and maintenance.

When you change your own oil you should be sure to check the old oil filter to make sure that there is still a gasket attached. I once didn’t do this and it was still stuck to the block, so when I put the new filter on, it couldn’t properly seal and so the filter backed itself off and the oil drained all over the street as I drove. Needless to say, I was very late to work that day.

I didn't like engines because of all the oil and noise and mess, but, thanks to this video, I like engines now!

I’m only 34 min in, but was it just me or was there no explanation of the head gasket before it just kinda appeared?

D
Dylan Johnson · March 23, 2026

I thought the same thing. I’m going to re-watch but as a gearhead/gearhead adjecent as it was shown I was like “Ah, of course, the head gasket” before wondering if he actually explained it. Though as the former driver of an ‘07 Impreza I am painfully aware of what a head gasket does or at least should do.

Again, a video about "old" technology, the sneers to how it can be done better and the subtile hints on your T-shirts 😁😅

What happens inside a piston really is technically an explosion. The ideal explosion is a controlled deflagration creating a smooth push rather than a supersonic detonation which “slaps” the piston head and the rest of the cylinder, potentially damaging them. This is the case for both gasoline and diesel engines. Movie explosions are deflagrations for the intense visual effect. Detonations go bang, deflagrations go foof, but they're both explosions.

I used to pour new oil into my oil filters. Why the hell not? Of course, most of my gas cars had their oil filters mounted vertically, so that was easy and virtually mess-proof. (One had a paper or cloth filter on top of the engine.)

D
Dylan Johnson · March 23, 2026

I’m assuming vertically from the bottom? Because I do not pre-fill mine because they mount vertically from the top which makes removal a dream and replacing with a pre-filled filter an exercise in futility.

Such a good video!!!

I'm really glad you took the time to make this video. I knew a bunch of this stuff in theory, but I had absolutely no idea what the internals of the engine looked like, or how the oil was distributed, or basically any of the things you explained so well in this video.

My family was a Buick Family. We bought Buick LeSabre after Buick LeSabre. When the Buick Skylark x-car came out, my parents bought that. Heck, they bought three of them. I bring this up because I ended up with my Dad’s Buick Skylark x-car, and it was the only car where the oil light turned on when I drove it. I was driving to work when I heard a large clunk and the oil light turned on. i pulled over and turned off the car. I was wondering what is wrong with the car this time. I looked down the road behind me and saw a large metal piece on the road. Did I run over that? I walked down and took a closer look. It was an oil pan. I sat there wondering how did this oil pan get in the middle of the road. Did it fall off some poor loser’s car? What type of piece of junk would you have to be driving to have the oil pan fall off? I noticed a trail of oil stains on the road going forward, and I realized it lead to my car. I now know the piece of junk and the loser who’d be driving it. That car had paint falling off. The interior ceiling was falling down. If you had the air condition on, the power brakes wouldn’t work. The engine kept twisting and breaking the engine mount, and causing the engine to twist and hit and damage the radiator. My mechanic actually put a chain around the engine to keep it away from the radiator. It was the last American car my parents ever bought.

Great video. Lots of things I already knew, but well explained and demonstrated, and it filled a few gaps I didn't know and made some interesting connections between the various bits of technology. Hey, that would be a good channel name...

Great video! One of your best, akin to dishwasher and video vinyl. It's wild to me that internal combustion engines are being covered by the obsolete technology guy.

I found out that a car can drive for about 3 km without oil before it completly dies. No need to ask me how I know... I was young and the point about making assumptions is valid.

Omg, the timing of this couldn't be better! I'm troubleshooting a misfiring cylinder on my Element this week and a top-down teardown of a 4-cylinder is just what I needed. <3

Exciting. I actually work at an engine plant getting spec data to the PLCs on the floor and collecting build reporting and quality data. So I have ended up extremely familiar with the manufacturing process. If you ever find yourself in Montgomery and want an auto plant tour, I can help you get that arranged.

I’d love to know about the A/C tech in cars—if you’re not already planning on covering that in your series please consider it! You’d get to talk about the refrigeration cycle againnnnn 😜

M
Matt Falcon · March 20, 2026

There is honestly a LOT to say about refrigeration and thermal management in EVs that takes everything TC has ever said about the refrigeration cycle and absolutely maximizes it. Wish I could post an image of the Service Mode display for the Thermal system in my Model 3 - a fascinating dynamic diagram of coolant and refrigerant flow and control. To heat the car, it cools the battery; to cool the car, it heats the battery, within parameters it stays within, to minimize opening the front radiator baffles... for efficiency! It is... truly a symphony worthy of a video. If it didn't have a big T on it...
