While I generally prefer for channels and creators, who aren't inherently about politics, to not get unnecessarily involved in all the daily political and cultural skirmishes (to a certain extent, I can inderstand the cozy escapism argument), the situation in the US is way past the point where it's not just OK but pretty much everyone's duty to get involved. I'm trying to minimise my use of US/Big Tech and as a European, I boycot (big) US companies wherever possible (ever since Trump and the Broligarchy came into power) but I am impressed by many (though still far too few) people resisting the regime and helping their neighbours. I've always loved and shared your videos and never doubted you're a deeply decent person, so I support your endeavours! You've made the right choice and I hope you even gain more new supporters than the few you might lose.

Thank you! I, 💯 %, support this! I think shifting the rhetoric back to some basics is smart and needed. I think this is a proper use of your platform. As an older millennial, I was once a "climate denier", more just skeptical. But I delved into genuine research papers and educated myself. And I changed my mind. I came to learn that "Liberal / Left" views are just more aligned with reality. My pragmatism and family environment (the news we listened to) is what made me conservative. Understanding arguments and evidence changed that stance. I know it's probably rare, but minds can be swayed. I still think it's worth trying.

It's your platform, obviously you can do as you please, but unless you have so much money rolling in you can afford to lose some, I'd be careful about picking a political side. Inevitably, businesses, creators, actors etc. fall when they alienate half their fan base. I love your technical information and your humor. I'd hate to have that gone. Taking political sides never helps anyone. You're not going to convince people of anything, all you can do is piss people off. I'd strongly suggest you don't do it. Talk fossil fuel vs renewable all day, just don't take a political stand if you value your career. That's my advice, take it as you please.

Renewable energy denial seems just crazy. I live on a narrow boat in a country famous for being overcast and 100 quid of used solar panels have given me 10 years of electricity all year round. I only just upgraded to a new used 500w setup and it cost about 60 USD, I'm not sure how many big Mac meals that is but I bet it's not many. Given the rise of the 4th Reich and daily ice shootings I'm fairly sure " govt is evil now" is not a controversial statement any more

You have been doing a good job at staying true to facts when explaining Technology Connections - even if these go in "touchy" (not touchy to me) subjects like "renewable energy". What ever you decide to do in this moment, will not change my support for your channel - the only thing that is important, that no matter what subject you bring up, what you decide to cover, do so as you have always done, systematically, following the facts and staying true to those facts, no "alternative facts" - enough of those. And should it become too much - take a vacation in Europe (you could combine this with a piece about the difference in electrical system between the US and Europe), where you (for most parts) don't have to have to look over your shoulder all the time. What happened to the conspiracy theorists I grew up with as a kid who rightfully (and often comically) questioned the government?

Do what you feel is right. Good can only bring good in the end. I am so worried because people are so easily swayed and manipulated. It's like real true facts don't matter anymore. I am with you on this.

Thank you for calling it what it is: murder. When people or news outlets say "was killed", they are implicitly avoiding taking a stance on whether the death was "justified" or not, even though we can all see with our own eyes that it wasn't. Let's all start calling a spade a spade.

I hope you read these comments... people need to wake up. People need to be confronted with the reality that what we are being told to believe (not know, not understand... "believe") is a lie to enrich the purses and power of a select few. You may think that with your channel, you have no role in combating those lies. But we all do. Be as brave as you can. I can't speak for anyone else - but so long as you are telling the truth, and being honest about your opinions and conducting yourself with integrity and respect for your fellow humans - I will always support you and I applaud your decision to speak up - even if its only about telling the truth.

The word "politics", like so many things, gets into a jargon issue. In classical philosophy, American political science classes, and literature such as Dune and LotR, the word "politics" refers to the study of the application and usage of POWER. Or in the language of my nephew, "how to get people to join your army." What you're talking about is GOVERNANCE, and it's sad more people don't make the distinction. If you look at an old newspaper (back when they printed such things), there was a section called "politics" that was the Team Red v Team Blue game, while "governance" was (usually) in the main section of the newspaper. I know language changes, but if there's confusion around the word "politics", especially political science, it's because it was the art and science of dividing people, and many still use it to mean such. Governance is talking about the BEST WAY WE SHOULD LIVE.

I'll donate a little more for the courage. It's hard to find middle-ground, technologically accurate, info about "alternative" energy. Batteries included.

I'm looking forward to the video. Both for the sobering wake-up call some people need about renewables, and for the talking to some people need about politics. I'm tired of watching "political" or "politics" being used like a dirty word to avoid talking about some topics. I'm tired of hearing "stay in your lane" when people speak out because other people don't want to be confronted with some uncomfortable reality checks. Give 'em hell, Alec. Go with it! And to add something to your script: Get the "efficiency" of E-Fuels in there too... We luckily have a knack for listening to science and numbers, and the E-Fuels are, from production to burning in the car, so inefficient that the only place where they make sense are like Arctic/Antarctic, jungle, lone islands far off coast (really really far) and other "end of the world" scenarios where regular fuel transport is not possible (Edit: And there is no electric alternative).

I'm kinda shocked to see there is a whole legion of people who insist that nuclear power's day has come, all aspects of it (including waste) are utterly safe, and everyone should look forward to having one in one's proverbial backyard. Is this all true? Maybe a future video topic?

FWIW something else you could do is put a subtle-but-obvious LGBT BLM Pride motif on your wall of curios. Sometimes showing is better than saying. I say this as someone who is trans and doesn’t overtly conceal being trans but makes it obvious if someone actually wants to notice. Mainly this means that if someone is transphobic towards me online it means that they dug through my profile, or they’re responding to me overtly outing myself in the course of conversation, so they’re being cringe. That said, aside from a BLM LGBT rainbow motif Where’s-Waldo’d into your set, yeah, being overt about [sniffs] ideology as it applies to small appliances (or, I guess, cars) is a good way of reaching your audience. For comparison I would recommend looking to your YouTube colleagues Cathode Ray Dude and Quinton Reviews, who I think strike pretty good balances with these things in their videos.

Just going to note that I appreciate that you end your notes with "Take care of each other." Now, more than ever, that's true and more people need to hear and understand that.

EDIT: Just to be clear - what's going on is overwhelmingly unmanageable, and the only source of comfort is seeing people use their platforms to be outspoken against the horrors. And you're a good dude. If people take issues with good folk calling out terrible actions, that really speaks to their awfulness, no? During the holidays, we (my family) talked about politics - in the meta sense. That it's essentially "how we come to decisions as a group" and that _everything_ is politics. And that what has hurt us for, well, a long time... We could be call it "anti-politics" since it's not about decisions or consensus. We thought it was a bit pithy and kinda liked it as a term.

Politics > partisanship is a great way to put it. I’m older…old enough to remember Watergate, to remember the Vietnam War, and the social changes of the 60s happened when I was a little kid. I remember when opposing views could be rationally discussed (I sometimes call America the “Great Conversation”). And I remember when…well, see Watergate there? I think this is an incredibly brave step. The energy lies are at the core of the right wing propaganda. I unfortunately have a lot of right wing folks in my family and the "energy crisis" brought on by "green energy" is one of the main reasons they are told we need to get all of the immigrants out of this country. Solar is great, I harbor none of the reservations you allude to in your post. But what it would take to make solar a for realsies part of the grid is so much more than just panels, and we can't get this done if we're not taking an honest look at the whole package. You know the US Constitution has been a great piece of technology for over 200 years now, maybe cover things from that angle. The history of it, its influences (from Athens to Rome to the Magna Carta to the enlightenment, to King George), to its successes (holding the country together (for the most part), maintaining rights, civil rights (eventually), separation of powers, impeaching Nixon, etc) to its failures (Slavery, the [First] US Civil War, the problems today (Freedom of speech, right to protest, right to bare arms, right against unreasonable searches, right against unreasonable punishments, bribery, separation of powers gone, war powers gone amuck, etc). Approaching things in this way allows you to talk about the very important current events, but in a way that remains fact based, and dressed in the valor of nationalism, so that all but the most reluctant DJT supporters would have a tough time disagreeing with. Sounds like a good early 250 year birthday gift to our nation...

I'm looking forward to this - I think you should delve into base load too as part of it. It's the only real weak spot in the wind/solar model of power generation. I think it's one thing that both proponents of renewables and opponents to nuclear (quite intentionally) gloss over. While I personally, I dont think we can get to zero fossil fuels for power generation, but I think we can get to better than 95% carbon free. (Gas turbine peakers are really really hard to replace) - I look forward to my preconceptions being challenged!

The “I know more than thou” take is what turns many off from listening to arguments about renewable energy in the first place. Skeptics are often good people that have been misled by oil lobbies, especially here in the Midwest

We’ve got your back, Alec! I’m a scientist and it’s sad to see the twisting of facts in the name of politics. Things like vaccines and climate change are well understood by the scientific community and there is little disagreement about the big picture. Politics should be focusing on discussing the best way to use that knowledge to improve society, not starting flame wars that ultimately lead to suffering that could have been avoided.

In light of your comments I’m reevaluating my membership and increasing my level.
