🍁(Patron Exclusive) Orphan 3.5 — The Refusal

Orphan 3.5 — The Refusal is now available for Uncut (Gladiator+) patrons.

This is the full, uncensored release of the new Chapter 3.5 update: a strange, atmospheric branch centered on refusing the Harrowing, dealing with its consequences, and reaching one of several alternative endings (dead or alive).

Of course, if you do decide to embark upon the Harrowing, prepare to strip down and prepare yourself physically and mentally for the descent into a world deeper and darker than what you've become familiar with. It’s a compact but substantial update that also focuses on improving the experience of the early Ascender branch.

Improved pacing, stronger visuals, new sounds, and a sexier UI.

🔥 What’s New (3.5)

• The Refusal — a new alternative branch / ending sequence.
  I didn't initially plan for this branch to be so big. But when I started developing it, the story really gripped me. So fuck it, refuse the Harrowing. Explore alternative realities; that's kind of what a game like this is all about.

• Alternative endings.
  The Refusal includes multiple outcomes depending on choice, stats, survival.

• 22 new images.
  This update leans heavily into atmosphere, danger, and mood. The visual side of Orphan keeps getting stronger. I've gotten to the point where I really enjoy having an image for every 4-5 passages, to break monotony and reinforce atmosphere.

• 25k+ new words.
  Several early scenes saw rewrites, but most of the release is geared towards the Harrowing (whether or not you refuse it). Explore a little, or a lot.

• One scene you may like...

  Leoris' scene above the Uneven Queen features updated visuals, and a new image for those that favor feet. I thought you'd like to know. Don't worry, I gotchu.

🕯️ What Comes Next

The Harrowing remains the next true movement of Orphan.

In all honesty, I was very, very close to releasing more, but the Harrowing's mechanical framework still needs a few tweaks before the story can pull ahead. Once that's finalized, we're in a really good position to continue at a momentous pace once more.

Chapter 3.5 was partly a release, partly a restart. The next push is the Academy route proper: the Cell Hub, deeper Bell sequences, and the slow transformation of Highrock from school into institution, prison, and ritual machine.

But as momentum picks back up, I'll be honest - I'm missing the Gladiator branch! Perhaps I'll run a poll and get some opinions... Regardless, leave a comment down below or @ me in the Exalted Text discord. Are you ready for more Harrowing after 3.5?
