(Dev Scroll XII) — Two Years of Orphan
Two years ago today, Orphan first stepped into the dark.
What began as a smaller, rougher, hungrier thing has since grown stranger, sharper, more ambitious and more fully itself. The world of Cradle has expanded, and the overall presentation has deepened with it.
That is, in many ways, what these past two years have been: a long descent. Not downward in the sense of decline, but in the older sense — into depth, into pressure, into the buried bones of figuring out what exactly it'll take to make this work.
Yet, there's still so much further to go.
The past few weeks have been quieter on Patreon than I’d like. That tends to happen when I’m deep in a build. I go silent, dragging each piece into place. But silence is not stillness, and a good deal has been taking shape behind the veil.
What the Silence Has Built
Like with most evolutions of Orphan, the next iteration has proved to be more substantial than I initially expected. I’ve been hard at work preparing the ground for The Harrowing, which is shaping up to be one of the most weighty and defining updates Orphan has seen yet.
Here is what is currently finished, or near enough to taste:
The Harrowing mechanics / UI are roughly 90% complete
Nightmare and Awakening have both received major visual overhauls
Around 10 new or revamped images have been completed for the early Ascender path
Reworked visuals for Leoris & the Uneven Queen + the wizard Mearesdes
Several earlier scenes have received smaller rewrites and clean-up passes
A detailed new Cheat Panel has been built for players who want deeper control over routes, branches, and exploration
This has not been glamorous work in the usual sense. Much of it has been systems, flow, presentation, and making sure the game’s next step actually lands with force.
3.4 was a visual redux, and an important one. It sharpened the early body of the game. It gave more moments a face, a place, a mood. It made the opening hours more worthy of what follows. But what comes next will be bigger & better.
Feature Complete — The Orphan Cheat Panel
One of the biggest things I’ve quietly finished over the past few weeks is the first full build of the Orphan Cheat Panel: a new overlay feature designed for deeper runs, easier testing, and far more deliberate exploration of the game’s branching structure. It sits outside the passage body, can be dragged around the screen, minimized when not needed, and called back up instantly with its own fixed toggle. I'm really happy with the presentation.
At its core, the panel is built to do three things well: let you inspect the major state of your run, manipulate that state directly, and see more clearly how Orphan is actually reacting to you beneath the prose. The current build includes dedicated tabs for Character, Story, and Branches, along with a collapsible Quick Actions footer for one-click presets and route setup. Stats, archetypes, traits, passage navigation, path flags, Harrowing state, resource meters, spell progression, artifacts, relationships, and outcomes can all now be surfaced and adjusted from one place.
The part I’m most excited about, however, is the Branches side of the panel. It parses the current passage’s conditional logic, shows what checks are being made, marks which branches you are meeting and which ones you are failing, and in many cases allows you to directly satisfy failed conditions to see what lies behind them. As Orphan becomes denser, more reactive, and more structurally layered, this matters more and more. It turns the game into something you can not only read and replay, but actively study, test, and dissect.
There are also a number of built-in Quick Actions already in place — presets for stat setups, dominant archetypes, Gladiator and Ascender route states, and Harrowing-specific boosts such as filling meters, unlocking actions, maxing spells, manifesting sorcery, advancing bells, or setting outcomes.
I’ll say more about how exactly this fits into future releases soon. For now, I’m comfortable saying this much: it feels like the sort of boon that belongs with those who want the deepest possible version of Orphan — the Kültists who don’t merely want to explore in the dark, but to stop, pry apart each brick, and see how the thing was built.
A Glimpse of What’s New
Over the course of this build, I’ve been reworking both the look and feel of the game in ways that I think will matter immediately to returning players.
The overhauled Nightmare and Awakening themes now feel much more distinct, much more deliberate, and much more worthy of the world they frame. The darker path cuts deeper. The lighter one no longer fights the text. Both now feel cleaner, stronger, and more immersive.
The early Ascender route has also received a number of new and updated visuals, particularly in places where the original version now felt too thin for the atmosphere it was trying to carry. The goal here has been simple: make the opening of the game hit harder.

The Harrowing Approaches
Throughout April, I’ll be pushing hard to bring The Harrowing over the line. This is not a simple scene pack, nor just another pass of polish. It's the next true escalation of the Ascender route: a harsher, more reactive descent built around deprivation, repetition, institutional pressure, and the slow revelation of everything false being stripped away.
The Harrowing is designed to feel cyclical and oppressive in a different way than anything Orphan has done before. Hunger, rest, focus, risk, and the rhythms of confinement all begin to matter more (mechanically). So do the people trapped inside that pressure with you. The goal isn't to turn the game into a spreadsheet, but to build a structure where atmosphere and mechanics begin pressing in the same direction. I want you to feel the grind, the dread, and the narrowing of possibility as something lived.
Narratively, this is also where a number of Ascender threads begin to tighten. Old tensions, strange influences, prior choices, and the MC’s own accumulated posture toward power, cunning, surrender and Will all begin to matter more.
There's still a great deal of writing ahead of me, along with many more visuals I want to complete before release. But the structure is there now, sharpened like a blade. The mechanics are real, and what I’m building toward feels less like a regular update and more like a true pressure-chamber — one that asks more of the player, and more of the game itself.
The next descent has already begun.
It’s strange, in a good way, to look back at where Orphan began.
In some ways the project is still recognizably the same beast: blade, sex, ambition, the pull of something strange, cosmic and mythic hanging over the eternal beast of our human struggle. But in other ways it has changed enormously.
And perhaps most importantly, there are more of you here now.
Thank you for reading, supporting, and helping carry this thing forward. Orphan has survived these two years because people kept reading and kept supporting, stoking the fire, lending more strength and energy to my strange vision for what this project can one day be.
In the beginning, I had no clue that I’d make it this far.
But here we are, better than ever.
Fuck doubt, fear, anxiety. Fuck the entropy.
🩸 Onward.

No new updates about progress?
Been a while since i posted a comment but i plan to support this gem through to the end Exalted. Dont work yourself to hard abd burn out we still need you🤣
Do you know what the problem is? It's April 1st, and I don't know if this post is real or if it's just a prank by Exalted, like a court jester playing a prank on his court 🫠🤣. If it's real, I must admit that I'm surprised by the inclusion of cheats. However, I suppose we'll all be grateful for them in the long run. I thought Exalted wanted us to have only one playthrough as a slave and one as an ascender and that he'd play with the mystery and the secret paths until the very end 😅. Is that first image from the initial chase? It looks good, and I don't think it's in the current game. I also liked the change in art style and the moon's position in the new interface 😎👍.
Two years! Two another!
The new cheat panel sounds great. It will definitely help with wanting to chose certain paths and certain LI's paths and how to get them.
Incredible stuff! The visuals look great along with the new cheat panel.
