Damage Mechanics

Hey all, another quick update:

FYI: This post is available to all free members, but early access to the full devlog and multiplayer testing will only be for paid members. So if you like what we're doing, considering upgrading and becoming a paid member, our Patrons are making development possible!

So, we've begun serious work on the damage mechanics and damage models, and we've made pretty good progress! Now, you can fire shells at a tank, and in realtime the game will calculate:

- Angle of impact (Shells will ricochet past a certain angle)
- Effective thickness at impact point
- Energy of shell (how much armour it can penetrate at said velocity)

Then, it will accordingly allow the shell to react properly based on all three of those factors. At which point the game will:

- Generate shrapnel, spall, (and if applicable) rivets, based on the energy of the shell
- Generate paths for the shrapnel, including ricochets inside the tank, losing energy with every richochet
- Allow damage to occur to components accordingly

This is all simulated in realtime, which is something we're really excited about, and before long we'll be conducting combat tests with this system! So, if you want to take part in these, become a Patreon member, and join us in making Aces & Armour come to life!

I've attached a video which shows an early demo of this system working in slow motion, to easier see the shrapnel and ricochet mechanics!

honestly, this is exactly what I needed to see this year. For the past few months I've been deliberating about what multicrew games I could play with my friends. We've tried Hell Let Loose, Squad 44, even MTC4 on Roblox and I've tried to convince one of my friends to get IL-2 Sturmovik for the multicrew tank combat but not only do you have to purchase the base game, you also need the 30 AUD DLC too. This is refreshing, I've been waiting for something to rival the crew mechanics in Red Orchestra, a decade old game. A game that focuses purely on the teamwork and experience of being a crew member during WW2. Although I can't become a paid member, I assure you I will follow your updates and buy a copy when full release is out

Glad to hear you're excited. Yeah, I think it's time for a new, fully fleshed out, approach to this method of gameplay.
