The break-room chatter died the second Elena stepped in for coffee.

She pretended not to notice, angling her torso like a careful ship through the doorway. The motion still clipped the edge of the counter; a stack of paper cups toppled and rolled across the floor.

“Morning,” she said brightly, bending to retrieve them. The stretch made the seams of her blouse hiss softly.

From the table by the window, the whispers started up again the moment her back was turned.

“138 last week,” Marcus from IT murmured into his mug. “Saw her update the board myself.”

“138 was last week,” Priya corrected, eyes wide. “I walked past her cube this morning; she had to turn sideways twice just to get in. No way she’s still under 140.”

Darren leaned in. “I heard the tailor quit. Sent her an email that just said ‘I’m out.’ Nothing else.”

Someone snorted. “Can’t blame the guy. Fabric has limits.”

Elena straightened slowly, cradling the rescued cups against the impossible curve of her chest. The gray fabric gleamed under the fluorescents, stretched so thin you could almost see the faint blue veins beneath.

“She’s literally outgrowing the building,” whispered Jen from accounting. “They’re talking about moving her to the warehouse floor; higher ceilings.”

“Warehouse doesn’t have climate control,” Marcus said. “She’ll roast.”
“Better than her knocking out a load-bearing wall with those things.”
A nervous laugh rippled around the table.

Elena poured her coffee with deliberate calm. The carafe trembled slightly in her grip; every small motion had consequences now. When she turned to leave, the group fell silent again, like kids caught talking behind the teacher’s back.

She paused in the doorway, one hand on the frame for balance.

“For the record,” she said without looking back, voice warm and amused, “it was 141 this morning.”

The room went dead quiet.

She took a slow sip, smiled into her cup, and added, “And I’m not done yet.”

Then she eased sideways through the door, leaving only the faint creak of fabric and the soft rustle of stunned silence behind her.
