TROGDOR'S MONDAY THOUGHTS - #12
I had a sort of revelation recently about the concept of OC's.
For those unfamiliar with the nomenclature, OC is simply a short form for Original Character.
Now for those who've been present on the internet for a long time the term OC has some baggage with it, some implicit connotations. Upon hearing the term, some people may think of teens and pre-teens posting their own custom Sonic the Hedgehog characters on Deviantart (Often just Sonic recoloured, with a whole host of powercrept attributes listed). Other's may think of webcomics featuring a cast of unique characters that have been running for years. Then of course there's the various NSFW artists who often have one specific character that they typically include in all their works, or perhaps others draw for them in various art trades and/or commissions.
Never did it cross my mind to include characters from solely literary media...in my perception OC's needed a concrete visual identity to count as an official OC, and so I never thought of myself as a creator with my own "OC's".
But that's not true, is it? Bryn is an OC. Exillia is an OC. Mary, Camille, Gabby, all of them are OC's.
Not that this changes anything or is really of any importance, it was just a thought I had. I guess I never made the connection because they lacked the auxiliary features that I've associated with OC's. Other artists aren't doing fanart of my characters, nor is anyone offering to do a trade of work, where they write about my character and I write about theirs.
Anyway... Have a good Monday
