Trogdor's Monday Thoughts #7

I have some opinions on A.I. art that I'd like to share. Well, some opinions and thoughts, and seeing as how this is my Monday Thoughts post, that tracks.

Firstly, its actually crazy how quickly A.I. technology and its ability to create has so rapidly developed. Considering where we started, and where we are now is actually wild.

Just to give a reference point, three years ago the technology was in it's true infancy, with the images produced being extremely rough, and obviously fake. I still remember laughing at the images shown on an episode of Last Week Tonight:

Figure 1: Jon Oliver Confused in a Cabbage Field

Everything about the above image screams that it was made by a computer. It's a jumbled mess, the details are awful, and while each image shows a man who looks approximately like Jon Oliver, none of them are the same, and none of them look exactly like him.

Well... things are much different now.

The way I see it, there are three classifications of A.I. Art now.

Classification 1: A.I. Generated drawings.

You know exactly what these are. They're what 75% of the posts on the Breast Expansion subreddit are these days.

Comics, often done in a single pane format, typically with a general anime visual style, though occasionally done in a vague western style. I'm not going to link any of them, because I don't want to give them more attention than they already have.

I hate these. They're soulless, and they spit in the face of actual artists who work hard to create artwork in their own style. These all look exactly the same, the images have no emotion to them, the style and designs are repetitive, they're just awful.

Classification 2: Near Real Life Generated Images

On the contrary, I find these fascinating. They're closer to morphs than artwork, except the people who are being "morphed" aren't real.

These images are hyper-realistic, except for the obvious enhanced proportions. There is often a shininess to these images that further alludes to their fakeness, but in that I find is some of the charm.

Whereas Classification 1 seeks to emulate and replace artists, Classification 2 is more like trying to replace photoshop, and it's doing a really good job. Some of this stuff looks really good, and I'm excited to see how much can be done with this field.

I've been really impressed by the work of RoboDreaming, you may have seen some of their posts on the BE subreddit recently, but if not check out these:

I really like how much these can give us a taste beyond the current limits of reality. Plus the obvious fakeness of it keeps them from becoming...

Classification 3: Near Perfect Generated Images

While scrolling through the front page of Reddit recently I came across a dumb post, joking about this girl who supposedly had painted a picture of Pikachu. A girl who was uncommonly blessed in her bust. Curious, and a little bit horny, I went to the comments in search of a name. Someone had provided her Instagram account handle and within seconds I was there...

Sexy right?

She's not real. I supposed the tits should've been a give away, but still.

This Instagram account is entirely fake. Every image is A.I. created. That's not just impressive...it's scary.

I still don't know how I feel about it. How far could this level of creation go? There are reels on the account, actual videos that have her moving around, all of it created by A.I.

Wild...

I briefly considered trying to learn how to use A.I. image creation when it had first come out, thinking "Hey, I can make images for my stories for free!". I never went through with it.

By the time the technology had become good enough I'd soured on the concept of A.I. "Art". So, since I have no innate drawing skills, my stories will remain image free, except for when my wife occasionally pitches in. Still feels like I'm a long way away from commissioning art...
