I'm sorry this took so long

The last two weeks have been a fucking nightmare.  I'm so sorry for not posting progress reports since last Tuesday.  The truth is I was embarrassed and stressed out about not having version 1.6 ready, and every day it wasn't ready made it worse.

My plan on Tuesday was to finish up in a day or so, then things could go back to normal.  But I didn't accurately judge how long it would take, and "a day or so" turned into 10 days.

I fucked up and I'm very, very sorry for a few things:

  • For how long 1.6 took in general;

  • For badly misjudging this last step;

  • For retreating into myself, and fixing all the last-minute stuff on my own, instead of reaching out to the team and the community;

  • And, most importantly, for being a total fucking pussy and staying off comms for ten days because I didn't have the courage to check in until I had good news.  This was pathetic, there's no other word for it, it was pathetic and I won't do it again.

Next public release

The new version, 1.6, is now in Patron early release.  We'll release it to the public in 14 days, on May 8th.

What to expect

We've added new mechanics that allow us to create story-driven sex scenes, with branching outcomes based on your decisions, PC and NPC traits, and dice rolls.  These changes are critical, but they're mainly "under the hood" (we made them for Bangkok).

That said, we've rewritten the date with Max to test and showcase the new mechanics.  There are also a few cool new QOL improvements like Dark Mode, new avatar size settings, and the ability to jump straight to new scenes without starting a whole new playthrough.

What else to expect

A really humble crab here and on Discord over the next couple of weeks.  I'm truly sorry.  馃槥

Hey, relax. You may get some grumbles, but a lot of us are supporting you for the long haul because we like what you're doing and we have patience. We get that building the framework is critical, time consuming, and the end user never really understands the value of it because they can't see it. At least until you start using the improvements to introduce features and functions they can see. Thanks for putting so much time and effort into this. Also, personal opinion here, I hate agile, I hate Jira, and I hate Devops. It works... but my god, sometimes I feel like I just want to work and leave the damn sprint board alone.

I've gotta say, this is a very small update for 6 months of work. Delays at the end don't really bother me, people underestimate the amount of work something requires, that happens, don't stress too much about being radio silent for a week. Its what has happened since October that makes less sense to me. If you're employing an 'Agile' development process like you're claiming you should be releasing an update every 2 weeks, when each sprint ends. Even if it's very small. You can then get instant feedback and adjust your development priorities - which is what makes the development process agile. I suspect with an update this small after 6 months you would probably notice almost every update every 2 weeks added no additional content, and you might start to think of adding the content of the game over behind the scenes engine work that I hardly noticed in this update. The story hasn't actually moved since June 2018. And given this was the longest break between updates, I assumed this was going to be the next enormous leap forward and we would actually get some Thailand content. You've got to start giving us some substantive steps forward. At $6k a month you're earning more money from Patreon alone then the average American makes working full-time, and I've seen it as high as $8k in the past. I expect at least a part-time commitment to the project for that kind of support.

I totally agree. And to be honest, this new sex engine doesn't seem so revolutionary to me, quite the opposite. In truth, it seems to me the same stuff, more or less.

Dude, you should learn to work better than that. For real.

I think many of us don't mind there is a delay here and there, just talk to the community when there is something expected, I am sure most of us will understand.

Don't beat yourself up so much. Just take stock of what took way too long and try to pare down that which doesn't add value. This is a process and you will get faster and faster at producing if you focus on what you are doing well. Play to your strengths and don't be afraid to let other people take control where they can move faster. You can do this and you can be great at this.

I have been quite critical of your progress but well done Crush. Bottlenecks like the one you experienced were quite common among independent creators and many would silently stop their update and never face their supporters again. You did not. Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger, take a healthy amount of rest and keep up the good work.

Yo straight up, you have been ten times more active with your community than any other creator I follow. Including this delay. Things happen, it is okay. Seriously proud to be a supporter of you and your team.

Thanks for the update Crush. Don't forget to take some time off for yourself. Get away from the game development for a bit to keep yourself fresh.

At the end of the day we just appreciate the time and dedication you put into the project. Your care for the project is appreciated. While not discount other's views, I think the majority of the folks here would want you to take the time you need and not break yourself on what is very much a passion project. I think folks get too caught up in this patron stuff, and feel like there is an obligation that has to be met. I would venture though that again, those that support the project for the long haul just want to see the project succeed, and will gladly give the time for proper development if they see progress, which is honestly something you and your team succeed at. Kudos to you and to your team. Look forward to what more is to come, but don't forget to take care of yourselves first.

It always takes longer than you think it will, especially bug fixing/polishing. Just do what you can and hopefully the process will be a bit more streamlined in the future. Of course, you will then encounter entirely new problems, but that's just how it goes. Look at major game releases, they almost always get delayed, often by months or even years.

Focus on the positive parts: what's good about the new game mechanics, and what did you do well when you were implementing them? What's good about the choices? What did you write well? What were you doing when you managed to fix it the way you wanted? And so on. You know, one thing my gym teacher did well was that he said that I should think about what I should do to succeed, and not think about avoiding failure. While it's somewhat of a cliche, I think that the mindset is true.

Dude, don't worry. No amount of regret will make it go any faster. As someone who writes and manages software product for a living, I can tell you that underestimating those last steps is common and expected. If something is taking longer than expected, just come back and reset the expectation. It's all good

Yeah, no worries. This stuff is hard and you do great work. Give yourself some credit.

Dude, we're with you. I've felt what you're feeling right now, but we're still behind you. If you need a little break for a palate cleanser, that's absolutely fine. Keep your passion alive.

You鈥檙e being awfully vicious to yourself for something that鈥檚 really quite a natural (if not ideal) coping mechanism. Let go of the need to be a perfect superhero and recognise that these schedule and scope challenges happen. A LOT. To everybody. Some do eventually learn strategies to avoid these so that they happen less often, but seriously, what team doesn鈥檛 end up with something like this every cycle? Having said that, having someone external who can ruthlessly slice scope (my job IRL!) is something you may need if you find yourself struggling to do so on your own.

Another thing that person can do for you is message timelines to your downstream, including other contributors and patrons.
