Rawls was implying that Burrell only got his job as Commissioner because of Affirmative Action and not due to his ability.
His father was in jail for a drug charge, they mentioned it in this episode.
There are plenty of tragic things in this episode, but one that gets me is Carcetti talking with Rawls and Daniels about moving away from stats-based policing, while at the same time his advisers are already telling him he needs to play the numbers game himself and get the crime stats down.
Finally caught up on this show after getting behind from being on vacation. S4 has been a lot but I'm glad to be watching it all the same.
We're on the home straight now - the next five episodes are superb television with the final two being the finest episodes of The Wire in my opinion but we'll get to those in due course. Just a couple of things - Snoop didn't take a receipt when she paid for the nail gun (S4 opening scene) possibly so there'd be no proof of purchase but probably irrelevant now they've tossed the nail gun. Lola - A DSS card is a social security card (Department of Social Security) and part of its use is to support low-income families to purchase food. One of your US-based Patrons will be able to explain in more detail.
OK, I've read the comments now and folks have explained about the DSS card. :)
Oooo boy rest of the season gonna make the reaction hall of fame
"Marlo is a grain of sand in the desert " Perfect way to put it Marlo. The Wire is so goated
@52:50 yup . A lessor show would have taking down Marlo as the nice main goal but The Wire is so real that you don't feel like that matters in the grand scheme of things. These lives will still continue to be messed up
It is such an underrated character detail of Chris to be a music/radio fanatic. To truly understand the fleshing out of his character up to this point you have to check out Jiggle it Shawty by young Leek. I grew up with radio rap from that era and even by those standards, Chris’ song choices were wild, especially for what he’s done.
I don't know off head who wrote this episode but it amuses me to think of a middle aged white guy and experienced crime writer having to dig into the Baltimore music scene and pull up Jiggle It as a song choice for Chris.
Michael to Randy : “Shit, at least you’ve got a leash” Bruh 😭
DSS is Department of Social Services which gives welfare to people who need it. The Independence Card they were talking about is basically a debit card that they can use to buy food and other necessities with the money they get from DSS. Also, Mike's mother said that his father was in prison for drug related charges, I guess you missed it when she said that.
Also on a lighter note, I know the actor asked for time off so his absence can’t be helped but I do find it extremely funny that Jimmy was told about the murder charge for Omar, questioned it’s authenticity, helped him make a phone call during the arrest and then went “Welp, this isn’t my problem”. Like he truly left that man to fend for himself, lol. But I always enjoyed Bunk’s and Omar’s relationship more because of their shared history and that Bunk is never afraid to call out Omar so Bunk solving the case was always better for me in terms of story.
I really hope the girls consider banning Orr Malus. He's repeatedly made deliberately offensive comments for the sake of getting a rise out of people, from asking the girls what "their favourite slur is" on the QnA post, as well as on the post regarding Milena's family member passing away. The comment he's posted above is particularly upsetting given the incredibly sensitive subject matter. There's a difference between being an edgy teenager and actively being a bully, and I know others here don't appreciate his presence either.
Of course this doesn't change things for the larger community, but on an individual level at least you can click on a user's profile and block them yourself which will hide all of their posts and replies. There are a couple folks here I've had blocked for months for this exact purpose, Orr included. Tired of seeing their bullshit.
I love Michael so much. He's genuinely fearless the whole season until this moment. Even though he is afraid of his abuser, his first instinct is to protect Bug. A very special character, and great acting from the child actor as well.
I feel for him, he's stuck in a fucked up situation and refuses to talk to authority figures such as Prez or a social worker because why would he? considering the environment he grew up in, he probably thinks it would make matters worse, he feels helpless. The only thing he knows for sure is to get Bug away from that man no matter what
As much as I hate Marlo, most of the cops, Namond's mother, and a few others there is NO ONE I hate more on this show than Michael's stepdad or whatever he supposed to be. My skin literally crawls whenever he was on screen this episode and I literally cried from anger and the helplessness I felt, even though it's just a tv show. Michael has always been quiet but over the last few episodes we did see him open up a little more to Prez and even not completely turn Cutty away, and then when he comes back, we see Michael completely shut down AGAIN, that to me is one of the most heartbreaking things to ever happen in this show, to see this child open up a little and believe life can be normal again and have that hope snatched away, I can't even describe the sadness.
Mike's mom said that he was in jail because of drugs.
That guy who Snoop almost shot is going to walk around all day wondering why he was almost killed for answering a question about a radio morning show.
That guy was so confused lol
Yoooo a double drop?! I'm still catching up on 4x07 😅
We eating good brother, we eating good
I think I hate Michael's mother almost as much as Namond's. Useless.
Independence card is the same thing as DSS btw, another substitute for the food stamps system essentially. A way low income people can get food
There's a lot of great things about season 4, but it's definitely a hard one too. I can understand why L&M feel drained watching it.
L&M - “what else even happened this episode. I don’t even know”. Chris & Snoop - being a comedy duo
Yeah, this is a pretty infuriating season...
I know all this is heavily implied but idk… it’s been a while so forgive me if I can’t remember much about the details of this show but I feel there is more to it.. maybe Michael dad’s used to beat him as kid? Maybe that’s why he is very violent sometimes. Again I won’t throw the pedo label to his character yet but we gonna see maybe in the next couple of episodes.

Rawls was implying to Carcetti that Burrell got to his rank with the help of affirmative action, and therefore feels indebted to the system, to statistics, in a way. That someone like Burrell doesn't have the capacity to be a good commissioner who can promote quality casework and so works the numbers because the numbers got him where he is. The subtext there is that "hey, you're white, I'm white, we both know how much harder we have to work to make it in this town," which is what angered Norman.
He definitely targeted Burrell in particular but also every other black police officer, basically implying that Tommy has to pick someone white (him) to be commissioner because all the black policemen are incompetent. Funny thing is it's not even clear whether Rawls believes what he said or if he just said it to put himself in a better position to be promoted, though he's made it clear in the past that he's about as racist as almost every other white cop in the department (pretty racist).
DSS Card! Department of social service will give those with low income a EBT card which you can use to buy groceries. Sorry The Wire broke ya'll, be sure to take time to relax after these episodes.
Just seeing that thumbnail makes my stomach turn
