Btw, the new opening was storyboarded and directed by Tetsuro Araki. The Director of Attack on Titan S1-3 and Death Note. He and Vinland's director, Shuhei Yabuta, worked together back on AoT. Really cool to see Araki work on Vinland to make this incredible opening.
To clear this up briefly: The scene of the escaping slave was supposed to be shown before Ketil sets off for Canute. Your confusion if this is possibly Einar a few years in the future was intentional, but didn't really have its effect in the anime, since this confusion is already cleared up later in the episode.
