I'm pretty sure Trisha's promise really was to not die before him, though it seems awkwardly worded here. "I need him to know I couldn't keep my promise" is odd because it makes that seem like the important part, but when he finds out she's dead then he would already know she wasn't able to keep her promise, no one needs to tell him. In Japanese at least, it's more like "Tell him I'm sorry I had to leave him first". The message to pass on is more her apology that she couldn't. Pinako and Ed just don't really have any context for how much it might mean to Hohenheim and Trisha, so they just seem confused.

ok, just watched the reaction and it's funny and endearing how much you care about the boys. the first time i watched this i was pissed off with hohenheim too but i didn't interpreted it as him doing it on purpose, i interpreted as him being awkward because he barely knew his own child, i guess we'll just have to wait to see if any of us were right it's nice to see you two warming up to the intro, i created a playilist on spotify with the intros, outros and some soundtrack of the few animes i've watched so far and i have to say i do love this one.

I love that Hohenheim’s first sentence to Ed was “you appear to have grown some”. Which contrasts so well with how he only hears that he is short from other people

Hohenheim was the first persons to tell Ed that he had grown, but Ed was still pissed by his commentary. It shows how much Ed hates his father.

Wow, I didn't expect that. Fun Fact: In the manga, the scene with Hohenheim was much guffier in the "funny" drawing style. He seemed like a clumsy awkward father. I like that the anime here tells the situation more seriously, he even seems a bit more mysterious.
