In the manga, the reason Mr. Dominic doesn't want to take Winry as apprentice is because he finds out Winry is the granddaughter of Pinako. Mr. Dominic, then, is scared shitless, and states "there is no way I am going to make that she-devil's granddaughter my apprentice!" Shows Pinako was a reputable badass in her younger years.
Did that happen in the 2003 version? I remember seeing that.

The pun in the original language, when Ed was trying to tell Winry the baby was coming, was between uma (horse) and umareru (to be born). My hat's off to the localizer, translating puns is hard.
Oh, because I heard it during the discussion: Fullemtal Alchemist is set in the first world war era in terms of technology (at least infrastructure and weapons). That's why the author set the year as 19XX. Edward, for example, was born in 1899. And the date in the clock, 03. October 1911, was simply written with the last two digits as usual. After all, you also write 23.04.22.
