“Five fathers, three mothers? Eight parents one child?... You were a tax break?” They don’t go into further detail on this in the show, but U.N. law dictates that the government takes eminent domain over private property unless the land has been in possession by eight ancestors in a single family. However, the law did not specify that the ancestors had to be from successive generations. So, eight landowners got together and used genetic engineering to produce a child (Holden) that was biologically related to all eight of them which gave them legal claim to keep their 22-acre property.
