The shows are not really that similar, but watching your reactions to this makes this think you two would absolutely love NBC's "Hannibal" with Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy. I can just see you absolutely falling in love with some of the characters in that. I really hope you get the chance to watch it with us someday!

You two should do a fun bonus reaction to the squat cobbler video back from season 2. They actually filmed it and its like 3ish minutes and its hilarious!

There's also a funny video of Aaron Paul reacting to it, though reacting to that might be a bit meta!

In a way, the entire Breaking Bad ark begun from Saul's 50% off episode. When Saul ran out of phones, he promoted 50% off felonies, which resulted in those two knuckleheads buying crack / cocaine (whatever it was) which got stuck in the pipe which resulted in Crazy 8 being arrested. Without Saul, Crazy 8 would never had been arrested that night, and then followed up assisted out of prison later by the time Walter came around (knowing how hard the US Justice system is on possession of drugs in a selling quantity), which would have never opened the possibility of Jesse selling Walters first cooked batch and ultimately leading to Walter killing them both. Not to mention, Jesse would never had been working with Crazy 8 when Walter went on his ride along with Hank, which would have never opened up the gate for Walter to enter the Meth business as he wouldn't of had anyone to help bring him into that world. Without Walter, Gus would have taken out the Cartel with Mike on their own, and not been killed as a result. Everything in the Breaking Bad universe seems to have started from the 50% off episode, this one decision to offer his services at a discounted rate created Heisenberg. One decision takes the entire breaking bad universe down a fate they'll never return. I believe it's one of the most beautiful episodes of the show in my opinion.

@Everyone - If you were involved in a crime, and you needed a Lawyer - whom would you call? Saul or Kim?

T
Taya · January 17, 2022

I'd be confident with either one but if I had to choose... Kim

I am so happy you ladies are caught up. I could not have imagined when this series started that the person to drag Jimmy over the line to being the full fledged scumbag conman lawyer that we see in Breaking Bad, would be Kim, but it looks like that is where we are headed.

Taya · January 17, 2022

Also ladies, if you haven't already watched it, please consider doing LOST at some point. Would be incredibly fun, I think it's gotta be one of the best shows to react to, given all its crazy twists and turns, mysteries, cliffhangers, deaths, and emotional moments (it's honestly ridiculous how much the show makes me cry lol). But I have a feeling you've already seen it.

D
Dustywood · January 17, 2022

Taya I'm not going to lie, I have watched Lost literally like 30 times over the years, use to have it in the background constantly too, love the series. Have you watched it in Chronological order by chance?? I really really recommend watching Lost in Chronological Order - you find so many little things you never noticed doing so. Soooooo good, 4 8 15 16 23 42

I apologize in advance for this NOVEL, lol. I think who Kim is as a character is revealed in her introductory scene when they're smoking in the parking lot. She's standing in the darkness and we can't fully make out her face. Jimmy is standing in the light. I take this to mean there is a darkness inside / associated with Kim that's been there the whole time. AND possibly a hint that she's lurking in the shadows behind the scenes during BB. She's present but we can't see her. They also did this with the Mesa Verde scene, while Jimmy is playing the commercials, in the closeup shots of Kim she is completely obscured in the darkness. Saul Goodman took the spotlight, but the puppet master was Kim. Jimmy IS bad for Kim... but Kim is also bad for Jimmy. Her goals are noble and she wants to do good in the world ... but to achieve that, I think she's capable of going much darker and doing way more heinous things than Jimmy would ever do on his own. Look at his face in this episode... he is shocked and uncomfortable. He doesn't want to do this to Howard. The bowling balls and prostitutes are one thing but he doesn't actually want to destroy Howard's entire career/life. That's a step too far, and if Jimmy were by himself he would never even entertain the idea. This show has tricked us into thinking Kim is Jimmy's "better half", that she's more ethical than he is but it's not true. If you go back and watch all of her scenes, she never objects to Jimmy's schemes on moral grounds. All she cares about is practicality and consequences. In the early seasons, she just doesn't think it's worth it for Jimmy to break the law and risk his career. Not because it's wrong. She just doesn't want him to get in trouble. Look at the way she reacted to Jimmy switching the numbers. She immediately covered for him and lied, and then later on, instead of giving him a lecture about how what he did was so wrong... she simply warned him to retrace his steps and make sure he left NO evidence behind. And she still happily accepted Mesa Verde as a client. Her character arc through the series has not been about a good, moral person slowly being corrupted... it's about a cautious, practical person slowly becoming more and more comfortable with breaking the law. It's about her realizing she has a love and a talent for it, and it gives better results than doing things by the book. And with each successful con, she grows more confident in her abilities. Her Sandpiper idea came as a direct result of the confrontation with Lalo. Notice how happy she is in this episode despite just going through a traumatic event. Jimmy is practically having Vietnam flashbacks while Kim is carefree and upbeat. She's brimming with confidence and excitement. She got a huge adrenaline rush from that experience and now she's ready to take on the world! After all, she just went face to face with a literal cartel boss and won, so any other challenge seems like child's play in comparison. I do think she was influenced by Jimmy's $100k. When he asks her how she's gonna make money she says "I'll figure it out". Well I think she figured it out. $2 million will definitely help get her pro-bono practice off the ground, but it won't last forever. Kim is gonna continue dabbling with "the dark side" in order to make money to support herself & her practice. And I personally think she has less moral scruples about it than Jimmy does. She's gonna get to the point where she's willing to do just about anything to keep her pro-bono practice going, because the ends justify the means. I don't even think she's scared of dealing with the cartel. She's 100% lying when she says "It won't happen again", I mean come on. She fully knows it'll happen again... but she thinks that when it does, she'll be able to handle it (uhh probably not, Kim!!!) So my point is... in season 6 Kim is gonna be the bad influence on Jimmy. She's spent 5 seasons enabling his bad behavior, and in 6 she's gonna take it further by actively pushing him in that direction, even pushing him past his own comfort levels, ultimately making him an even worse Saul Goodman than he was before, and helping to bridge the gap between the Jimmy we know now and the Saul Goodman in BB who casually suggests murdering people. I think the Sandpiper plan will succeed. Howard will be ruined. :( With the money Kim will start her pro-bono practice and perhaps Saul will open up his strip mall office (and buy the Cadillac!!). They will buy that house they looked at. During BB Kim is alive and still associated with Saul, in some capacity. Kim is behind Ice Station Zebra Associates. A big reason why Saul is so eager to make lots of money is to help support Kim with her pro-bono office, which perhaps has become renowned and is a pillar of the community, and no one knows it's being propped up with dirty money, lol. I do NOT want Kim to go to prison, but she might. The one thing that makes me think this is the scene where Jimmy goes straight to work but Kim stays behind to clean up their beer bottle mess. That means something. Kim will be the one who has to clean up a mess they made, while Jimmy gets off scott free. Hmm. Now I'm totally on Kim's side (even if she does become a villain lol) but even I would cheer if Howard is able to rise from the ashes and get his revenge, perhaps find a piece of evidence that implicates Kim and gets her in trouble. Okay, I'm done, but also... Nacho survives. His dad may or may not. The conflict is not gonna be just between Nacho & Lalo, I think practically the whole cast will become involved and entrenched in it. Nacho enlists Saul to help him somehow, and they do something to Lalo (that doesn't kill him). THAT is why he says "It wasn't me! It was Ignacio!"

Bruh, Howard dont be deserving the shit that the 3 of these guys (Kim, Chuck and Jimmy) been taking on him. The man just tryna build his company and the others just fucking him over

I feel for Howard, I couldn't stop laughing at that scene with the prostitutes at the dinner, as awful as that was from Jimmy - but Howard is literally the most sensible of the lot. I really love his character, the fact the show made us dislike him at the start then redeemed him, and now he is the beacon of reason. What a great character.

Looks like my comment disappeared, hopefully it stays up this time. I've been waiting forever to see the reaction to the Kim vs Howard setup and it didn't disappoint. I did not expect Milena to be all in on it. I'm not as big of a fan of Howard as the two of you are, but I'm definitely more with Lola on this. Very excited for all of the arguments that'll probably come up over that when the new season airs. Hopefully your friendship won't be irreparably damaged! I can't remember if either of you brought this up in a discussion before but one detail about Howard that very curious is that he wears a wedding ring. There's been no discussion of his wife at all throughout the show. She doesn't seem to be at Chuck's funeral, there's no mention of her when Howard is struggling in season 4, and when we see him at home a couple of times this season he seems to be alone. I think in this last season we're going to explore Howard a lot more than previously, and my guess is that he probably a widower. It'll make him even more of a sympathetic character right before whatever plans Kim has for him go into action. And speaking of the finger guns from Kim and the parallels to season four's finale, another parallel that I hadn't noticed until this rewatch is that the scene also resembles the squat Cobbler conversation in season 2. Jimmy and Kim were sitting on a bed eating pies, Jimmy on the left side talking about how it wasn't a big deal and Kim on the right trying to pull him back and listen to reason. Now here they are again sitting on a bed eating a dessert with Kim on the left side and now Jimmy on the right side trying to pull her back. Kim's story really has come around full circle.

D
Dustywood · January 18, 2022

Most shows don't include side characters partners in the plot, the ark maybe there regarding his wedding ring for instances, but it's extremely common for a TV show to have a side character that's family life isn't developed into the story because it would be irrelevant to the bigger picture. Howard isn't a main character, diving into his family and his wife storyline would be a little pointless to the overall picture. We've gone 5 seasons in this series and we haven't touched Howards backstory once, so I don't believe they will suddenly make up time for it in Season 6 since we have the Lalo ark and the post Breaking Bad ark to complete (along with whatever Kims and Saul's plans are for Howard).

I'm not ready to wait. I don't know how long for the new season. React to the gag reel, deleted scenes or whatever for my sanity please 😂 I'm just kidding, Better Call Saul is my favorite show and I loved your every reaction and I enjoyed your analysis of each episode, of course I will look forward to your new videos from the new season.

This episode takes place in June 2004. When Saul makes his first appearance in BB it is December of 2008. I’m not sure the events of this episode is even what Jimmy is referring to when he talks about Nacho and Lalo in BB. The fact that we’re still 4.5 years away from that moment has me curious about how the writers are going to fill in all of that time. So far, the show has spanned 2 years (May 2002 - June 2004) which means season 6 may span over twice the amount of time as the whole series has without even taking into account the Gene storyline. Now, the writers may not get us all the way to that moment in BB, but I do think they have to get us very close (within a year?) before switching to the Gene story. Of all the remaining threads in the story (Kim, Nacho, Lalo, Gene, etc.) the one I am actually most curious about is how they will handle the 4.5 years we still have before the BB timeline. Has anybody else thought about this or seen any theories for how this will be handled?

T
Taya · January 17, 2022

I'm almost certain Saul's Ignacio & Lalo comments are NOT referring to what just happened in this episode. Why would it still be relevant 4.5 years later? I think there's more to the story here that we'll see play out in s6. But as for the time span... the show just needs to get to the point where Saul has his strip mall office, has hired Francesca, and we have a resolution to Kim, Nacho & Lalo's fate. If Saul spends 3 years doing his thing in the strip mall before meeting Walt, there's really no need to cover all of that time unless there are specific things happening that are relevant to the overall plot.

I love that we can now openly talk about theories. Milena - I'm sorry - But I don't think Kim is a sweet baby girl :) I'm convinced Jimmy's Mesa Verde presentation shattered their relationship forever and now Kim is about to show Jimmy he's not only the World's Second Best Lawyer, but also the World's Second Best Conman. Kim is angling for the Sandpiper money and is going to run off with it, leaving Jimmy to have to do all that he did in Breaking Bad to try and make it back.

B
BND · January 17, 2022

I’ve seen that theory but I’m not sure I buy it. We’ve seen that Kim genuinely loves and cares about Jimmy, I don’t see her conning him like that. I could be wrong of course, but that’s just how I see things

Could someone maybe answer a question I'm confused about from the last episode: why does Jimmy freak out when Kim says she's leaving Schwiekart? Is he simply unloading his anxiety onto her?

D
Dustywood · January 17, 2022

From the Ological channel on YouTube, he explains in this scene that Jimmy feels upset that she would leave her role at Schwiekart as it would involve quitting Mesa Verde, which he went completely out of his way, losing his Lawyers License over when he switched those numbers on Chuck's papers, and her keeping her position with the bank makes him feel that it was worth the loss of his license for as it provided Kim with stability. Kim quitting this role means that Jimmy's efforts were all futile in the end. I think this was a pretty spot on analysis from the Ological channel

I think Lalo comes back against Gus in a big way. If you consider Mike telling Jimmy he was going to be killed. Then his conversation when kidnapped in bb, he must know Lalo survived and was on a rampage xD Lalo must lose though considering Gus is around and maybe Jimmy doesn't know he's been dealt with Can't wait to see how it all plays out though!
