Attack on Titan 4x08 Reaction
i don’t think i’ll ever get over this episode
Comments (126)
Last time I wrote a comment I accidentally spoiled them without realizing it. Since then I’m trying to be cautious, so I wait for their theory first
I just remembered that Armin is actually the one who told eren that he has to throw away his humanity if he wants to fight monsters. What about Levi, who always pushed him to make the hardest call. I would say they’re the ones who created the monster.
agreed. Why the best comments always come late?
Sashas death shook you guys so hard that your reaction to Zeke switching sides was the most anti-climatic one I've ever seen haha, you both took it for granted right away, RIP Sasha doe
basically my cry channel now, thenks guys
You can call "our" Eldians - "Walldians", to separate them from the Marley-Eldians (that's what many manga readers used to do on Reddit)
I like Paradians and Liberians better.
Feed Gabi to the dogs.
Oh so be no better than that sick Marleyan general who fed Grisha's sister to dogs. Sounds great making sure the cycle of violence continues which the whole show is about Like Jean said: "Will throwing some kids out of the airship make the killing stop?" And he is right in questioning that, it won't. Floch who has more hatred in him was ready to throw them out if Jean said the word. Throw children out?? It will only attract revenge from other people later and provoke them to do smth even worse. And the cycle continues.
jesus the theatrics lol
What do you mean?
you mentioned jean covering his ears for not to hear the screams, that reminds me that the colossal titan of armin has no ears to not be able to hear the screams of the people he kills, really sad
This Episode is just pure Pain.
The comments are exactly how AoT universe is right now. Everyone wants to defend someone while the others damns them. Isayama probably laughing and crying at the same time. Eren Kruger said it best: The only truth in this world is that there is no truth. Anyone can become a god or a devil. All it takes is for people to believe it.
Nope. that pain we inflict on ourself. He is just mirroring it in a show, so we realize.
Just had the time to watch the reaction + discussion and as expected you did not disappointed. I knew you would be emotionally intelligent (not like MANY people/reactors) and would not hate Gabi. I mean, you guys answered to my tweet about it so I knew your opinion but still. There's too much hostility in the comment section and tbh I'm surprised some of the people actually enjoy the show when they are the example the show give about how violent and hostile people are. Anyway, despite how many of those people are in the comments I'm glad at least it gives you money lol you'll need it to pay the therapy
“Pay the therapy” lol
They reacted as the author (Hajime Isayama) wanted it to happen, empathizing with those from Liberio and those from the island :'D Grande!! I understand them
Fun fact: Sasha was supposed to die in season 2 episode 2, titled "I'm Home". It's the episode where we get background on Sasha with her dad, and features her saving the little girl from the small Titan. The only reason Isayama decided to rewrite it so that she lived was because his Editors pleaded with him not to kill her off, since they loved her character so much. So from a storytelling perspective, Sasha has been on borrowed time since season 2.
coz u can easily kill one of them so that there are 2 left
Hello, is there a specific date when we can expect the ep 9 reaction? Thank you for this series
Ep 9 will come on Friday in the late evening (european time). AoT reactions always Tuesday and Friday :)
This episode broke me. I'm glad to see we think so alike in these situations. How can someone really chose a team in this... I mean of course we have grown to love our characters from Paradis but you can't not feel for the poor children seeing their loved ones die and think that fighting back is insane.. It's just a terrible situation everyone's in and Sasha was unfortunately one of the casualties..
You're not choosing a team because it's a TV show. In real life, you definitely would choose a team since your friends and family would be on one side of the conflict and people who want to kill them on the other. Of course, I feel sorry for indoctrinated children whose lives have been nothing but hell. But once a war is inevitable I'd do everything I can to protect the people I love. You can acknowledge the moral ambiguity of the situation and emphasize with Gabi, but if this were a real conflict, you would have to pick a side regardless. Of course, the best option would be to prevent all of this mayhem in the first place. Unfortunately, our characters aren't granted this luxury. War is on the horizon and innocent people will die no matter what.
Also on Eren I will say this. The concept of being pro or anti X character is a dead concept in this show. But before we think that Eren jumped into this hot headedly, (I mean why would you possibly think that after episodes 3-5 of this season), do recall all the instances and I mean all, when everyone within the scouts viewed and weaponised him as a tool of war. Even without knowing reveal of what is going on inside Eren’s head : it’s pretty telling when you look at the gradual manner in which he crumbles as a person to the degree that he is ready to throw his life away when kidnapped by Rod Reiss, how he is prepared to not really care about if he gets injured during Titan experiments (3 x 11), he hardly seems to care at the reveal that he will die in 4-5 years. Eren Kruger’s words hit it best to Grisha, that Grisha’s sins are enough. That they have to keep moving forward until the price of their actions is paid. Reflect on that again and again, cause that is a torturous state of mind to be in. To live only to constantly pay off the responsibility others have put on you, and the weight you have put on yourself because of how you impacted the said others. It’s so damned fascinating because in almost every comic book/fantasy/shounen show I can remember. The theme for the hero is to keep moving forward and never give up, be the force of hope etc. This show decides not to be tone deaf, this show takes the never giving up trope and puts a more realistic spin on it. Because the shows typically idealise that no matter how messy the world is, your never give up attitude can win out, putting the onus on the character themselves. This one however squarely assesses what kind of changes can a person undergo if the world’s context is as abusive, and puts it through a gradual context. Most of the worlds even in other shows have been shown to be abusive to somewhat similar extents. Just that those horrifying contexts havent been fully portrayed in those said shows. Seeing Eren hurts so much because we have seen the journey. It’s heartbreaking and uncomfortable at the same time. After all Eren is the so called superman within the walls, and he has the grit and determination to shame anyone. Shows like to portray that you can win in an unjust world with grit and determination. This show is essentially saying that winning in an unjust world should not be the main focus. And thus we come to the mental state of mind that is Eren’s. Weary with grit, dragged down by his own determination and knowing full well that the rebellion against the world may not even change the world. The boy who sought freedom and agency so much is perhaps the least free character I have ever seen. P.S : he was never annoying. Im ready to die on that hill.
Please delete @Asylum comment without reading it he is trying to be smart and thinks he isn’t spoiling but he definitely is. I wrote a response under his comment asking to delete it. Just find my comment go up and don’t read his comment and delete it.
The show is definitely getting even darker with the events of this episode, it was for sure one of the heaviest in the season for me. It's not at all a spoiler to say, without any specifics or hints, that things are unfortunately going to get sadder, because anyone with any sense would have figured that out already four seasons into AoT. There's just no version of this story where everything is all uphill from this episode on and there are no more tearjerking ones. Isayama's not the kind of writer to just subvert our expectations for future episodes out of nowhere with a massive tonal shift.
@Haengekulmpen has lots of spoilers in all of their comments. Some are marked, some are not, but honestly I would say it's best to not read any of their comments and just delete.
Can't wait for the Gabi haters to pour into the comment section. People's reaction to Gabi's character and her killing Sasha is a good litmus test for whether someone is actually absorbing the themes of the show and capable of trying to be nuanced and objective.
Perhaps a better litmus test is whether you hate her after having had sufficient time to reflect? I'm glad some people were able to see through to the heart of the issue right away, but I think for some people watching this show, and I was one, they're so attached to Sasha, it takes a couple of weeks to reconcile anger with understanding for Gabi.
Yea it always confuses me when people hate Gabi and wishes that she dies and yet praises Eren when they are literally cut from the same cloth, they are exactly the same, the character of Gabi serves to show us that history will always repeats itself if you refuse to learn from the past.
Thank you for being one of the few reactors that actually view the whole situation from both perspectives. Some fans hate Gabi's guts and call her annoying and blindly support all of Eren's actions, but somehow miss all the similarities that they share. Gabi is as annoying, stubborn and revenge driven as Eren is or was. I think the main theme of this season is the cycle of revenge, which is not really anime fans' (or any fans) favorite trope, because we know that the only way to stop it is to be the bigger person and "forgive", but people don't want to see that, they want action and violent heroics. It is more comfortable in shonen anime when the good guys are the heros and the bad guys are the villains, but AoT deals with the gray areas that make stories less idealistic and more complex.
I agree with your point but there's a difference between hating Gabi's guts and finding her annoying. It's perfectly reasonable to find her annoying. She is fueled by a constant bloodlust to kill evil Eldians and acts as a mouthpiece for despicable propaganda. That's annoying. However, because I understand why she's behaving this way I don't hate her. She's a victim of childhood indoctrination. One can acknowledge the tragedy behind her character and still find her attitude quite annoying at times. In fact, it only gets worse in future episodes. But again, I don't hate her. Being born in Liberio under an authoritarian regime, she never had a chance.
Love the reactions and discussions as always!
Also I loved Willy's take on peace. He is aware of the unfair prejudices towards his people. He is fully aware that the Eldians on the island aren't devils. It's not even a stretch to say he doesn't believe Eren would release the wall titans. However, his take is in order for peace Paradis must be destroyed. He believes that we will always be at conflict and we must unite toward a common enemy. It's sad yet beautiful.
Question for everyone…does anyone recall a scene in this entire show thus far where Eren laughs out of happiness or because he genuinely finds something funny?
When Hans died.
No words can describe how beautiful the writing in this season is. There is no right in this war for "peace. It's a common theme in this. Who is the enemy?
If you guys like the opening you should check out Samuel Kim’s rendition/ cover he did of Boku no Sensou. It slaps
And now they are going to blame Eren for sashas death, another burden to carry.
@apotatfanedits : this comment is hilarious man, i laughed out loud . Thank you for making my day 😁
Please if you see this Lm reactions don’t read any of @Haengeklumpen’s comments literally all of them contain spoilers as another comment also said just delete his comments but don’t read them. literally all of his comments have some kind of spoiler
Yooo Lola is lowkey the reaction GOAT. Always so impressive to see her break everything down. Theories and discussion were great as usual but my jaw dropped when she drew the parallels between Gabi's "I didn't see it" and Grisha's "I can't actually read this." "I know enough that this shouldn't be done to us." Well said. Appreciate you guys so much.
This season man, the other seasons don't hold a candle, just wild season.
Exactly ! I m always dumbfounded when I hear reactors talking trash about S4 and using the technical difficulties Mappa had to prove their point of view!! I mean , in S4 we are in the real vast world people. The subplot of humanity vs titans in Paradis is long finished and we ve got to face the struggles of each side. This fucking series is brilliant and the best is to come in part 2.
“ Led by love. Those words are so poignant you have absolutely no idea.
OMG yes!! It broke me when they say that and also made me happy that I m watching someone that UNDERSTANDS this freaking complex character which is not the case of most reactors. This show is gonna be painful for them to watch and also for us audience even manga readers.
"I'm so sad she didn't die on a full stomach", what a quote
Kindly reminder girls, I'll just say it and leave, @Haengekulmpen pretty much all of this guy's comments include spoilers. If you see his name please either delete or ignore them completely.
Listen the the opening with subtitles and you will be shocked
ugh i knew this episode would break u two </3. And your'e right gabi killing sasha after sasha killed her loved one is just. another example of the cycle of war. her death rlly is a turning point for the series specifically reflected in the attitudes of the characters. also it's so sad that mikasa was one of the more stoic characters but she rlly was sobbing and crying over sasha. a lot of mikasasha moments weren't animated, but they are pretty close and sasha was mikasa's only real gf in the scouts besides eren and armin. it's also canon that they were roommates so her loss is just so impactful on every character it's heartbreaking.
Just keep watching, u guys gonna understand everything in the end.
I like their reactions because they understand the depth of things and they are not like those who see in black and white, this is all a tragedy, in wars there are no winners or losers, they are all just victims.
I’m so sorry girls about your baby girl. 🥩😢
As soon as Lola wanted to stop and pause the episode a couple of times even before Sasha getting shot, my heart broke knowing what was coming and knowing that here we really feel the emotions that the show is conveying. This is not just a cartoon, this feels real here because of how well it's done and written and acted.
Honestly the mini spoiler/speculation they had about Gabi killing one of our guys made the reaction better imo lmao. Most people find it very sudden and unexpected, but in your guys’ case it just made everything more tense
Exactly. I was surprised that Milena came to that conclusion in the last episode just from wondering why do people hate Gabi
Wonderful reaction and discussion like always, but jeez yall really deserve some wholesome and cheerful Shows in the near future after all the pain/grief that AOT especially has caused. Healing shows that mend the Heart and soothe the Soul like Mob Psycho or Haikyuu would be great rehab after AOT
Mike Kamuy that’s why they are now watching Death Note for some wholesome and cheerful content. 😂
#GabiBestGirl People who couldn't empathize with gabi are the same ones that couldn't do it with Azula in ATLA
trash opinion
It seems as far as reaction channels very few people ever realize why eren is laughing when conny says sashas last words. It’s a painful laugh, eren doesn’t think her death is funny, he’s laughing at the silliness that all his good friend thought about at her death was what she loved the most, and it both brings him pain and comfort to hear it. He isn’t crazy or a psycho here, he’s grieving in a way many people do: by finding a silver lining of comedy among the pain
Exactly. They show that memory for a reason.
The fact that Sasha last word was meat which in Japanese pronounced (niku) is so mind blowing and it show how genius is isayama.
What do you mean?
I had to watch the same scene 3,4 times, then read 3,4 reviews to understand the character’s actions & motivations. But you catch everything from the first second, while crying.
And also, please Lola we need that 3 hour review of Eren’s character
Gabi: 'I did not see it' Well Gabi haters you DID see it so if you wanna at least be smarter then the 'brainwashed girl' you despise then prove you can emphasise OR go on and prove Isayama's point which makes the story all the more beautiful and sad.
Her comment there is actually pretty scary if you think about it for a second. I think Isayama is trying to make the point that, unless you were there and experience something yourself, i.e. "saw it", then it's much harder for certain things to really deeply impact you. So you might hear a story of some tragedy that someone went through, but compared to your own tragedy that you LIVED through, sometimes it doesn't matter if you technically "know" that it happened if you didn't "see" it happen. It's really cutting message about how humans only have so much capacity to share the grief of other people.
I am tired of you two. Your emotional intelligence is terrifying
The mangaka originally wanted to kill Sasha in season 2, when she was saving the young girl from the small titan eating her mother. His editor saw the proofs and begged him nonstop to not kill Sasha, as she was his favorite character. Once I learned that I always had a feeling that it might come up again if presented, but it didn't make it hurt any less even seeing it coming.
call me a terrible person, but throwing her out the airship seemed a reasonable option
You are ignorant of what the show is trying to portray and cover. Rewatch the show.
All of you Gabi haters you clearly don’t understand the show if you hate her. She saw everyone she loved be attacked and many killed just like Eren but the only difference is she is a trained soldier that can fight at that age and her first introduction to Sasha was when Sasha killed the gate guards that had been kind to her and many other eldians and were telling her to get out of there to safety and she then sees a girl on a roof shoot them. There is much deeper meaning to all of the things and I only wanted to mention that if Eren could have taken revenge in S1 he would have and she is no different except that she could take revenge. I just wished to explain that she is actually very justified in her actions even if we hate it. And this show has been trying to portray that it’s not as basic as good vs evil the world is just cruel.
Even rewatching this I can’t hate Gabby because I’ve seen the same experience happen with Eren when he was young and I don’t think he would have done anything differently than she did
Yeah, but they want to show that the Eldians are good by killing off all the bad Eldians in Paradis, and that means Eren and his friends and family. Eren wants to kill the enemies that would kill him first, like they did his mother, and he watched, so his mind and psychology was twisted beyond what it already was. That is why Gabi is not wrong either, Sasha did kill her friends, and her retribution pains the hell out of us. Genius writing and execution. Plus, Gabi is a child and product of propaganda. It is Marley manipulating the minds of the masses, of the common people, giving them all a scapegoat, using everyone for their own ambition and greed. It is divide and conquer, and most people have no chance to see through the ideologies, and everyone is set against each other to distract from the real enemies in power. A lot of parallels to the real world, and people really like to pick sides to live their comfortable lives both physically and psychologically.
Have you girls read the comments on episode 6 and 7 on patreon just wondering? A lot of good and informative comments there for once which you should read if you haven’t.
Every single reaction channel on YouTube that I have seen have cheered on when Gabi and Falco were getting beat up after she shot Sasha except for you girls.
Most reactors, yeah it's disappointing. There are maybe less than 5 that did not cheer for that, they are the most empathetic and understood the point of the story showing the killings and the cycle of violence. But the understanding itself is a journey, and not everyone can see the destination or goal from afar.
Is there any other option for Eren ?
No there isn’t.
There's actually been quite a bit of evidence to foreshadow Zeke's betrayal. He's been sus since S3 part 2. His betrayal/the fact that he's up to something separate from the Marleyan agenda is quite glaring. 1. In S3 E17 he gets angry when the Scouts are charging him and thinks how tragic it is that they're repeating history. He then has to check himself and remind himself that he's not like his father Grisha, and that he has to try and enjoy things. 2. He tells Eren that he's going to come back and rescue him. This is the most glaring sign that Zeke isn't the character we thought he was. 3. In S4 E2, it's revealed that he's purposefully hidden the fact that he has royal blood from the Marleyan army/government. 4. In that same episode, he tips off the warriors that the Marleyan brass are listening in on their private meeting. Magath notices this and is concerned that Zeke made that remark. 5. In S4 E4, Eren is shown to have a baseball and a baseball glove. This is a clear indication that he's been in contact with Zeke, as Zeke is the only character in the show to have a connection to baseball. 6. In S4 E5 undercover Yelena sends him and only him away before leading Porco and Pieck to the pit trap. 7. Zeke is then absent for the entirety of Episode 6 and takes his sweet ass time getting to the battlefield even though he's the highly regarded War Chief. 8: In S4 E7 when Zeke calls out Levi, he tells him that "he's running out of time" before it cuts to Levi looking directly at a stopwatch, waiting for something. This is an obvious hint that the two are in cahoots. 9. Levi takes Zeke down with no resistance at all. This is more of a common sense thing as a viewer, but there's absolutely no way a character as major as Zeke was going to get killed like that. I'm sure there are many more, but this is all I've got off the top of my head.
I hated Gabby so much after this episode I eventually stopped after a while and understanding her, but the initial hate of someone killing Sasha was strong
Milena and Lola only speak facts when talking abt Attack on Titan characters
People hating Gabi should really re-watch this season again, please
Ikr, but surely you mean the show, everyone knows that Sasha was a annoying character with only 1 good episode.
We came a long way to see a racist girl get all that screen time.
you should really re watch this season bc you didn't get the point Isayama was traying to make with her charachter.
Can't watch today because I need to get up early tomorrow and I don't feel like crying right now. I can see by the thumbnail and all your tweets you did not have a good time with this episode and the next one... understandable to be fair. This season is heart-wrenching. I'll send love to Gabi for all the hate some of the viewers are going to give her.
Also in EP 4 you see Eren with a baseball. This was a hint at Erens and Zekes collaboration. There is only one person who could've given him the baseball after all. The pitcher himself. At this point you could have already known that zeke and eren met in Marley.
if Eren would have taken Reiner and Galliard (in human form) as you suggested, Marley would have been left with 1 titan, the Cart. Well... let's just say that is not the strongest of the titan shifters :D
Lmao that would have been hilarious they only had one titan left and it’s the bloody CART titan of all Titans. They would be screwed lol
Ima be real, id 100% give gabi a real good kick or two right to the jaw piece for that too. And your tears arent enough to stop me 😈
You clearly don’t understand the show then.
This is the episode where the Gabi hate started, though the fact that she became hated speaks volumes about what a fantastic character she is.
RIP my personal favorite character!
"I cant watch this further" I cant think of many examples of shows where the writing is so good that it just hurts to keep watching. This show is just a monster at how it puts audiences on the spot. And the placement of this episode is eerie. If the lessons from episode 2 to 5 had not been fully internalised, Isayama gives two more episodes where people are likely to cheer for the Paradis Eldians and then give their fans this. It's like he's just asking that specific section of the audience : "Still feel like cheering?" What a madman.
Floch gang!
really, man?
rip my favorite girl ever :((
worst episode to stop and go do something after
ah yes this episode
its here everyone.
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS EPISODE FOR SO LONG NOW TIME TO CRY WITH YOU GUYS
Oh boy, this is gonna be fun
The second most painful part of this season for me. The 1st is yet to come. RIP OUR GIRL
I think I know exactly which episode you mean and I wasn't ready back then and they won't be either.
too descriptive this thumbnail... we were like that :/
Sasha... 💔
Im not ready but we can cry together
Honestly I'm a bit hesitated to watch it now because of the thumbnail..
