NEON GENESIS EVANGELION: CHRONOLOGICAL TIMELINE (This timeline only includes information revealed through Episode 21. Some dates and additional details come from the official Platinum Booklets rather than being explicitly stated in the anime. I've omitted spoilers from the full timeline published in the official Platinum Booklets.) – Approximately 4 billion years ago: First Impact, also known as the Giant Impact, occurs. A brief on-screen reference in Episode 7 associates it with a massive collision believed to have formed the Moon, but the event itself is never explained in detail. (The approximate date is also confirmed in supplementary material.) – 1947: The first Dead Sea Scrolls are discovered near Qumran, close to the Dead Sea. – 1999: Professor Fuyutsuki meets Yui Ikari at Kyoto University. He later meets Gendo Rokubungi, who is romantically involved with Yui and eventually marries her, adopting her surname to become Gendo Ikari. – 2000: SEELE supports the Katsuragi Expedition to Antarctica. Gendo leaves Antarctica on September 12, one day before an experiment involving Adam triggers Second Impact. Dr. Katsuragi dies saving Misato, and approximately half of humanity eventually perishes as a result of the catastrophe and its aftermath. – 2001: Shinji Ikari and Asuka Langley Soryu are born (just the same year not the same date) . Asuka grows up in Germany. (Their birth year is confirmed by supplementary character information.) – 2002: Fuyutsuki joins the UN investigation into Second Impact, discovers evidence of a cover-up and becomes suspicious of SEELE's influence over the United Nations. – 2003: Fuyutsuki confronts Gendo about Second Impact and discovers Gehirn's underground facilities inside an enormous cavern whose dimensions are almost identical to those of the underground cavity in Antarctica, where the experiments on Adam took place and Second Impact occurred. He also sees Evangelion Unit-00 under construction. Gendo persuades him to join the organization. – 2004: Yui disappears during a contact experiment with Unit-01, which young Shinji witnesses. Gendo subsequently proposes the Human Instrumentality Project. – 2005: Misato meets Ritsuko and Kaji during her university years. Misato and Kaji begin a romantic relationship and eventually move in together. – 2007: Misato and Kaji break up. (The specific year comes from supplementary material.) – 2008: Naoko Akagi completes the fundamental theory behind the MAGI supercomputers. Ritsuko graduates from university and joins Gehirn, where she discovers that her mother is having an affair with Gendo. (The date of the MAGI theory's completion comes from supplementary material.) – 2009: Misato joins Gehirn's Third Branch in Germany. (The anime confirms that she works at the German branch, but the specific year comes from supplementary material.) – 2010: The MAGI are completed. Gendo introduces young Rei to Naoko, who discovers that records of the girl's past have been erased. Naoko strangles Rei and then takes her own life. Gehirn is dissolved and replaced by NERV. – 2012: On the eighth anniversary of Yui's disappearance, Shinji visits her grave with Gendo but runs away. (The specific year and anniversary are established in supplementary material.) – 2015: Sachiel, the Third Angel, attacks Tokyo-3, marking the first Angel attack in fifteen years. Gendo summons Shinji to NERV headquarters, where he pilots Evangelion Unit-01 for the first time and defeats Sachiel. – 2015: Asuka arrives in Japan with Kaji aboard a ship in a UN fleet transporting Evangelion Unit-02. Unit-02 is subsequently transferred to NERV in Tokyo-3, and Asuka joins Shinji's school. – 2015: NERV's Second Branch in Nevada, United States, disappears along with Evangelion Unit-04 during an experiment to install an S² Engine. The exact cause remains uncertain. Following this disaster, the United States orders Unit-03, developed at NERV's First Branch in Massachusetts, to be transferred to Japan. – 2015: Toji Suzuhara is selected as the Fourth Child and assigned to pilot Unit-03. During transport, the Evangelion becomes infected by the Angel Bardiel, which takes control during its activation test. Unit-03 is destroyed, but Toji survives with serious injuries.
