Okay i don't know if this helps, but this episode rewatch made me realise there's actually a great reason why they dealt with Nobara this way and honestly I can't believe this isn't a common conversation in the manga community. I hope you guys can appreciate it too all said and done.

Here's a link to the Zen'in family tree if you're interested!! Several people have explained it in the comments but I've noticed most people say that Maki is Megumi's aunt, which is incorrect. They would be second cousins https://www.reddit.com/r/JuJutsuKaisen/s/ZwBjLbSc3C

S
Shamiran Prater · August 18, 2026

For the record, just to be clear, we never saw or heard megumi answer yuji when he asked about nobara. To be honest, I'm still unsure if this is supposed to be interpreted as megumi did answer yuji but that answer is just being hidden from us as the audience, or that megumi just didn't answer yuji's question. But y'all were talking as if megumi said that nobara is dead, but that never happened

Naoya is a really cool portrayal of the person that gives into ideals without questioning them cause they benefit him. He's embracing the clans conservatism, wearing traditional clothes and spouting misogyny, which of course benefits him, while him admiring Toji's strength and looks shows he doesn't quite understand the clan politics. Throughout jjk it seems like whenever a character is really strong it's first noticed through their speed, Megumi/Toji, 2nd-years/Suguru, Megumi/Sukuna and so on, which of course makes sense from a point of if someone is faster than your comprehension you can't fight them, but the speed usually comes from their usage of cursed energy i.e. strength. However, Naoya and the previous clan head or fast because of their technique rather than fast as a consequence of being strong, it's as if they're more concerned with being perceived as strong than actually being strong which might reflect upon the whole clan and their views on power. In Naoya's fight with Choso he starts of with the iconic "hair flip" to style on Choso in a fight that he ends up losing, he's first and foremost concerned in how he's perceived. Meanwhile, Yuta whom is, non-misogynistic, way stronger and values humanity more than strength, appears striking a kind of non-masculine pose and gets straight to business against Yuji and later Choso like it's nothing, he's got no desire in showing off since he's confident in his strength, purpose and values.

So yeah, now you can see why Nobara's storyline direction was such a controversial decision many people didn't like. But I feel like we still can't fully discuss it, because we manga readers know what happens in the story overall, so there will be spoilers and we don't want you to see it. All I can say is that it's frustrating and a bad writing decision to fridge one of the main female characters and make her fate ambiguous. But speaking of ambiguity, it seems like you misunderstood this scene a little bit. Megumi didn't tell Yuji verbatim that Nobara is dead, what happened in the scene is: Yuji asked a question, we are not shown what Megumi answered, scene skips over it to show us Yuji's reaction saying "I get it" and them both wearing solemn expressions. To be fair it is a purposely ambiguous scene and you can come to either of the conclusions available - he said she's dead or he said she's alive and is in coma/in a bad condition. It's not clear and this is the problem. Also wanted to clarify a few momements. About Zenin clan family tree: Naobito, Toji's father, Maki&Mai's father -> brothers; Toji and Jinichi-> brothers; Naoya, Maki&Mai, Toji -> cousins, Megumi -> Toji's son, Maki&Mai and Naoya's nephew. Naobito - the head of the Zenin clan who we've seen died; Naoya - his son who is a wannabe clan head but technically Megumi is the clan head right now so he's after him, Naoya has unspecified older brothers and he is the cousin of Maki and Mai, and also Toji's cousin, which means Maki and Mai are children of Naobito's younger brother, and Toji is the son of Naobito's older brother, which explains the big age gap between all the cousins; Toji has older brother Jinichi whom we've seen when Naoya said he's not handsome like Toji (the big longhaired guy with a beard), Toji famously has a son Megumi Fushiguro, which makes Megumi the nephew of Maki and Mai and also Naoya. Yes, Maki and Mai are Megumi's aunts, despite being only a 1 year apart (Naoya is 27 btw, grown ass man bullying kids). About Culling Game. Yes, both types of people The Brain talked about (the ones who are vessels of incarnated past sorcerers and the ones who just now became modern sorcerers with newly awakened techniques) are considered sorcerers and are players in the game, they worth 5 points, the same as jujutsu sorcerers, curse users and cursed spirits we are familiar with. Nonsorcerers are regular people who have no abilities and got sucked in this mess, they worth 1 point. And no, just not participating in the game isn't a good move, it only sounds harmless that penalty for this is a technique removal, but it essentially means probable death

M
Mr. Every · August 15, 2026

I think he wrote himself into a corner when he came up with that one technique that could stop injuries from getting worse. At least, if I'm writing a story and want to show my protagonist getting fucked up, but also want him to continue fighting in a way that seems believable, than I need some ability that mitigates the damage that has already happened. And if that happens in the same area as another character who just got messed up, it makes sense the technique would be used on that person as well. Im not saying its good writing, I think he felt he was forced to do that in order to maintain the tone of the story he was writing. Not that we needed false hope, but that she would die and Yuji needed to keep fighting. So its not that the author is playing with the audience, its just brutal that we have to learn about her death when Yuji does, and Yuji learns after it happens due to him being isolated for over a week. The fact it was split between the two seasons was honestly unavoidable.

Update from Vince Gilligan: season 2 writing is complete and filming will begin in 2 months. It’s possible that it will air by late 2027.

F
Frosty · August 15, 2026

idk it seemed to me like she was most certainly dead in season 2 and this episode moves it from 99% to 100% dead. her death makes sense to me (not manga reader). Its not like that guy said "shes still breathing and theres a pulse but shes in critical condition!" It was more along the lines of shes likely dead but you never know, BUT when you add in what we know about Mahito's technique and how theres no coming back from it AND the whole flashback lore drop for her in the same episode, its pretty clear whats happening

O
Oodjee · August 15, 2026

Wait so do most watchers strongly think that she's dead? Damn I must be in complete denial, because the way it was handled in this episode was on purpose. Either Megumi said something and there was a quick cut so that the audience doesn't know, or he just just furled his brows and itadori jumped to the worst conclusions. But it's a very intentional edit and direction in that moment that leaves some ambiguity in my opinion. Which suggests she might be alive lol. I found the whole thing too cryptic if she was actually dead. But who knows (except the manga readers).

C

Jona · August 15, 2026

(I’m an anime-only ) I really don’t get why we always have to refer to the “rules of television” or the “rules of storytelling.” I think it’s cool when authors break those rules. Now, in Nobara’s case, it might be a shitty choice for all I know. I really liked it at first, but I have yet to see what he’ll do with it.

D
Daiga54 · August 15, 2026

I think there's a chance that Gege may have accidentily permanently killed Nobara I don't think that's what happened but it is possible he wrote her "dying" with the intention of her coming back but then afterwards realized his mistake of killing her with Mahito's technique where there is no possibility of healing as Mahito destroyed a piece of her soul and we know RCT can not heal that kind of wound. Again I don't believe this happened when you consider how thought out everything is but you never know people make mistakes :).

A
A · August 15, 2026

I am an anime-only. I did not see a body. I still think she can be alive. (Manga-readers please don't reply.)

M
Mr. Every · August 15, 2026

you did see a body. she had a hole through her head

V
Vict · August 14, 2026

By the way Choso and other sorcerers can't use their abilities and techniques inside other people (Like bloodbending). This is due to the body of a sorcerer being "like a domain" (Quoted is word from Gege, the author, themselves). There are 2 sorta exceptions to this. One is Mahito who could touch souls directly due to his technique and the other way is to "open" the opponent's body by stabbing or whatever you gotta do, so that their domain is "open". Gege didn't give a lot to work with and it's all pretty vague but that is the understanding on why Choso and by extension the entire Kamo clan isn't just all powerful. The source of all this isn't even the manga it's an official Fanbook that Gege wrote to explain and answer certain questions.

M
Mo0t · August 14, 2026

I'd like to clarify a pretty terrible mistranslation from this episode. When Yuta, Yuji, Megumi, and Choso meet Maki and Yuki at Jujutsu High, Yuki remarks when referring to Maki's burns that there was "Not much I could do about the burns. Scars remain, even with the reverse cursed technique." This comment implies that Yuki used the reverse cursed technique on Maki to save her life after burning, which is completely untrue. There are two distinct "levels" of the reverse cursed technique. The first "level" is producing positive cursed energy to heal oneself. We see Sukuna do this in the first few episodes, as well as Gojo after he's attacked by Toji in the hidden inventory arc. The second, and far more rare "level", is being able to produce AND output positive energy to be able to heal others as well. This is something that not even Gojo can do despite the Six Eyes. The only characters shown to be capable of this so far are Shoko, Sukuna, and Yuta. In the manga, it is either implied or explicitly stated that Shoko was the one to heal Maki with the reversed cursed technique. Unless MAPPA is rewriting Yuki's character to give her the ability to heal others, this is a fairly bad mistranslation, and only noticeable if you've read the manga. Otherwise, this is a fantastic episode, and I look forward to continuing to watch with yall.

Flubbedsquid · August 14, 2026

I haven't read ahead, I've only seen up to this season, but I took the Nobara scene to be Megumi basically confirming she's dead. Like, he just doesn't wanna have to say it. Which is why Yuji's looks so distressed and says "all right", he gets it, he gets what Megumi would have said and that Megumi doesn't wanna say it. It seemed very unambiguous to me personally.

O
Oodjee · August 14, 2026

I thought the opposite. The lack of saying anything left room for the possibility she could be alive. And Itadori just quickly took it to mean she's dead. Anyway, I did google the answer cause I was frustrated with the unnecessary back and forth . Apparently readers find out in chapter 267.

Naobito (former head of Zenin who was cooked by Jogo) is the older brother of Ogi Zenin (Maki and Mai's father), so Naoyo is Maki's cousin. Jinichi (the big scruffy Zenin seen in ep 1) is the older brother of Toji, and Naobito and Ogi are their uncles. Therefore, Naoya, Maki, Mai, Toji and Jinichi are cousins

42:15 Basically the green-haired guy is the son of the previous clan's leader and he has an uncle who is the father of Maki/Mai and an ANOTHER uncle who is the father of Toji, so all of them are first cousins who share the same grandfather (I think most people get confused because they assume old man Zenin is Maki's grandfather when he is her uncle.)

Hagoromo Ôtsutsuki Ermite Rykudo · August 14, 2026

I’ve read the manga, and i won't spoil anything but you should know that Gege isn't your typical author; he does unexpected things. And for sharing my thought only on where you are right now on the anime regarding the idea that Nobara might be dead, that would simply reflect reality. Through his manga, Gege shows us just how cruel reality can be especially with the shibuya arc, just because she’s part of the "main trio" doesn't mean she’s immortal or untouchable only the protagonist cannot die on a show, and her odds of survival were considered extremely low from the start. It’s like in real life if a doctor says that a person has a non-zero chance of death which mean that his chance of surviving is extremely low and the person ultimately dies, it just logical, their survival odds weren't high to begin with why you would be that surprised with his dead ? Gege aims to break the conventions of classic shonen, something he clearly demonstrated during the Shibuya Arc that a quality I really appreciate in his writing. That’s why Nobara’s death here would cleary not be illogical or anything especially considering the impact on Yuji’s character development a point you’ve already grasped quite well

R
Rice · August 14, 2026

The Nobara situation is easily my least favorite part of the whole series tbh. It’s just handled incorrectly in every way.

M
Mr Krabs · August 14, 2026

i hope you understand the controversy and anger of the fans over the nobara situation now

B
Brandonsuplex · August 14, 2026

I would attribute any uncertainty about nobara to Gege's uncertainty about what to do or not with her character. Basically, i wouldnt interrogate it that much.

N
NMP · August 14, 2026

Ok in general i know your comment section freaks out about anything that even remotely hints at something but this is a part of the show that a lot of viewers get maybe confused/frustrated by. And I just want to say, I think Gege around the point we’re at now got a bit too hyperfixated on the mechanics and logic of the games and it leads to him just vomiting a bunch of rules at you. All it really is, is a backdrop for our characters to go off and fight a bunch of different bad guys and meet new characters to achieve their goals. It almost helps to not overthink the rules.

N
NMP · August 14, 2026

And when the rules say “non sorcerers” are worth 1 point it’s referring to normal civilians. The second kind of player you’re thinking of are more like Junpei where they were normal but had their brains altered to be given powers. They are now sorcerers and considered players in the game so they’re worth 5.

N
Nate · August 14, 2026

I see that we're reopening the Nobara discussion. This is one of the quirks of Gege (the writer) that really irritates me but also it's a good reminder that this is a different kind of anime than the ones you have watched before. Jujutsu is a battle shonen, so it prioritizes the action and the stakes as opposed to a complete character focus like in Hunter x Hunter, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Frieren. But Gege is heavily inspired by these types of manga, as well. So there is a lot of fantastic character work in the show, but at the end of the day, character work can never be the sole focus. Lots of what was set up in the first two seasons gets put to the side in this season. Mainly the whole element of Jujutsu High and a lot of the characters we were introduced to then for the purpose of following the main plots of Yuji and his villains. It's what makes this show a frustrating experience as a dire hard fan of the more intricate character focused animes. I think when people were warning you guys early on that you might not like this show as much as others, it was because of writing decisions like this. That's not to say Jujutsu is a shallow or not good show, because obviously it's really good for what it is. It just has different goals.

B
Brakthir · August 14, 2026

HXH and FMA are battle shonen as well

H
Hollow · August 14, 2026

A lot of people said "why did they bother giving Yuji false hope she might live and still kill her off?" But that moment was about giving Yuji the strength and hope to get back up in that moment and continue the fight against Mahito. To continue the fight amidst deepest despair was important for him.

I'll just say it now - all other aspects aside, this is the single best animated season of anime/television. And I'm not talking about frame count, I'm talking about the language of animation as a whole - from the colors to the staging to the choreography - everything. Kendall Roy · August 14, 2026

Gege went wild in Season 2, but not enough to make Yuta go against what Gojo stands for. I didn't buy that the first time I saw it either, it's really hard to imagine any of the Tokyo kids going against what Satoru sees as the right path for the sorcerer world. The dialogue between Megumi and Yuji is one of my favorites, protecting Megumi will always be a priority for Yuji and he sees staying away right now as the best option, but ultimately they can only protect each other by being together. I absolutely love the relationship between the two of them, it’s hard to even define what they mean to each othe and after Gojo and Geto, theirs is my favorite dynamic.
